Sermon Tone Analysis

Introduction

Greetings...

For the preacher and for those that hear the sermon to be pleasing in this act of worship there are certain things that “must take place.”

With this in mind let us examine our lesson.

Preaching Doesn’t Shrink From Preaching It All

The Apostle Paul’s use of the word “shrink.”

Paul is known for his military terminology such as found in in the “armor of God” or in concerning our spiritual warfare.

People might not know that Paul was also very keen on using nautical terms.

It’s been estimated that Paul was at sea some 6,800 miles for about 111 days which is roughly 3 months and 3 weeks.

The pilgrims were at sea 2,750 miles for about 66 days which means Paul was at sea almost twice as much.

All this is meant to show that Paul new nautical terms and when it came to preaching he wasn’t afraid to use them.

The word “shrink” in & is the Greek word “hupostello.”

It’s a nautical term for lowering the sail and admitting defeat.

Preachers preach sermons that keep the sail up.

Preachers are to never lower the sail concerning the Word of God.

Paul did not “draw back, back down, get timid, hesitate, or withdraw” himself from preaching the whole truth!!!

Some get the idea that that worship in preaching should only...

Feed spiritual milk to the body…how many times have I head “just preach Jesus” with the context being just preach feel good sermonets.

Feed the egos of the body…how many times have I heard “we are a mature congregation” which in context means we don’t have anyone that need to hear hard preaching.

Feed through the peripherals…how many times have I heard “preachers shouldn’t name names or point out the congregations weaknesses” which in context means don’t step on toes with the truth and possibly hurt feelings with the truth.

Summery

Preachers are to never give up, shrink back, back down, become timid, hesitate, withdraw, compromise, or seek to lower the sails so that the congregations worship in preaching will be pleasing to God.

Preaching Preaches In Season & Out Of Season

The sermon must be based on needs not wants.

No one likes hard, toe stepping, and painful sermons meant to prick the heart of those in need of it, which includes the preacher, but sometimes this is exactly what is needed.

It would be nice if every congregation, including this one, was always “in season” and never had any problems or issues that needed a sail raised and ready.

However, if that was case than there would be no need for Christ’s blood in that congregation because it would be perfect and without sin or sinners.

The reality is we all sin more often than we would like as individuals and that trickles down to the congregation as well unfortunately.

That isn’t to say a congregation can’t have more “in seasons” than “out of seasons,” it can and should, but that many in the church today think their is zero need to “out of season” preaching.

Therefore, sermons must be based on needs not wants, though sometimes the two combine.

There are times when “in season” sermons should...

Encourage heavily.

Build up heavily.

There are times when “out of season” sermons should...

Tear down lofty opinions contrary to sound doctrine.

2 Cor 10:

Confront the issue at hand and those causing it so that the leaven is removed.

Gal 5:7-

Summery

The reality is no can worship during the preaching of the sermon like they should if the sermon isn’t what it should be.

Anyone that would try and hinder such must be silenced so that the worship of the whole is not hindered.

Conclusion

Any attempt to manipulate and devalue the prayers, communion, singing, giving, or preaching during the churches gathering on the first day of the week should be swiftly and fervently handled.

To not do this means to not be danger of worshiping in a manner unworthy and unacceptable by God.
