What does it mean to have eternal life?

Going to heaven.
Living Forever.
Being Saved from your sin.
John 17:3 ESV
3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.

Life is to be with God

He did the same thing to Adam. He said to Adam.
Genesis 2:18 ESV
18 Then the Lord God said, “It is not good that the man should be alone; I will make him a helper fit for him.”
Genesis 2:19 ESV
19 Now out of the ground the Lord God had formed every beast of the field and every bird of the heavens and brought them to the man to see what he would call them. And whatever the man called every living creature, that was its name.
Genesis 2:20 ESV
20 The man gave names to all livestock and to the birds of the heavens and to every beast of the field. But for Adam there was not found a helper fit for him.

Eternal Life is to be with God

Death is to be without God

Gen 2:
Genesis 2:16–17 ESV
16 And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, “You may surely eat of every tree of the garden, 17 but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die.”
And that’s exactly what they did.
Genesis 3:6 ESV
6 So when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was a delight to the eyes, and that the tree was to be desired to make one wise, she took of its fruit and ate, and she also gave some to her husband who was with her, and he ate.
Gen 3:6
Genesis 3:7–8 ESV
7 Then the eyes of both were opened, and they knew that they were naked. And they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loincloths. 8 And they heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
From that time forward they were dead in the trespasses and sins.
They were still walking around
They were still breathing in and out.
They were walking dead people because they were without God.
What do we call walking dead people today? (Zombies).
Jesus came to give us new life.
Through Jesus we can have a relationship with God again.
John 17:3 ESV
3 And this is eternal life, that they know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ whom you have sent.
John 17:3

What does it mean to know God and for Him to know you?

God wants to know you in a very real way.
How many of you know Jesus? You have asked Jesus to come into your heart and save you from your sin.
John 10:27–28 ESV
27 My sheep hear my voice, and I know them, and they follow me. 28 I give them eternal life, and they will never perish, and no one will snatch them out of my hand.
We know him because he talks to us and we talk to him.
John 15:14
John 15:13–15 ESV
13 Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. 14 You are my friends if you do what I command you. 15 No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you.
We know him because we follow him.
We learn how to follow by learning the Bible.
We learn how to follow by listening to the Spirit in our lives.
We know him through struggles of life.
How bad do you want to know God? How much are you willing to suffer with him?
Philippians 3:10–11 ESV
10 that I may know him and the power of his resurrection, and may share his sufferings, becoming like him in his death, 11 that by any means possible I may attain the resurrection from the dead.
Phil 3:10
It’s not easy to live for Jesus in this life. It will take some faith and some struggle.
You might even have to sacrifice sometimes to help your friends.
Conclusion
But as you do you will know God more.
You will know what Jesus went through for you.
You will be living in eternal life right now. You don’t have to wait to know God.
