Review 1:8-10
Review 1:8-10
The Romans Faith was proclaimed throughout the world
We talked about how the Romans were known for their faith. For this to be true, they had to put their faith into action. We need to do the same.
We talked about how Paul was always praying for the Romans.
We need to pray for others as well.
Have you been praying this week?
Read verses 11 and 12
Two verbs we want to consider:
Paul wanted to see the Romans so that he could strengthen them
Paul wanted to see the Romans so they would be mutually encouraged
Strengthen and Encourage - we need to do the same
Q: Can you think of anyone who needs to be encouraged in their faith? Do you know anyone who is struggling?
Q: What are some practical ways we can encourage them?
Pray for them
Spending time with them
Bible study
ENCOURAGEMENT
Ken Graves: One of the most powerful things you can do is encourage someone
More effective than rebuke
When someone you respect tells you that you are doing great, it makes you want to continue
We also read about being MUTUALLY ENCOURAGED
Just as other Christians need us, we need them
Campfire example: Don’t be the stick that gets taken out of the fire.
Let’s read
Fellowship should be:
Pray and learn from the Word
Share one another’s burdens
Rejoice in the Lord together
Read vs 13-15
Paul felt obligated to preach to gospel.
To all unbelievers, Paul felt a debt to preach the gospel. He owed it to them.
Now it is our turn, Christ commissioned us to do the same in .
When you meet an unbeliever, think that you actually owe it to them to preach the gospel.
Read 16-17
This is Paul’s thesis statement. The entire message of Romans in seed form.
Paul was not ashamed of the Gospel. Why? It was God’s power
Q: What impact did the gospel have on your life?
The gospel is powerful. It can change the life of the worst person.
Anyone have an example?
Be encouraged, that person you are praying for is not out of God’s reach
What is salvation? 3 tenses:
Saved from the penalty of sin (past)
Saved from sins power: present tense
Saved from sins presence: future
The gospel is for EVERYONE WHO BELIEVES, was for the Jew first, then the Greek
Some teaching is that the gospel is only for the elect. Some people, not all
Gospel is for ALL who believe.
It came to the Jews first, and then to everyone else
The gospel declares the RIGHTEOUSNESS OF GOD
Righteousness is God is morally perfect
Justice demands that anyone who is not morally perfect must be punished
Q: God wants to forgive sinners. How can he be morally perfect (righteous) and still forgive sinners?
Jesus had to pay the penalty for our sin.
THAT IS THE GOSPEL
