Gal 5:

The fruit of the Spirit can not be picked and obtained it must grow from within you as a result of being filled with the Spirit.

Producing the fruit listed here is a real miracle and while they may not draw the same excitement as walking on the water, healing the sick and the lame, raising the dead, they are way more powerful.

Today we are going to talk about patience.

New England preacher Phillip Brooks was known for his calmness and poise.

His intimate friends, however knew that he, too, suffered moments of frustration and irritability.

One day a friend saw him pacing the floor like a caged lion.

“What is the trouble Dr. Brooks?” asked the friend.

“The trouble is replied Brooks, “that I’m in a hurry, but God isn’t.”

What is biblical patience?

What does it look like?

How can we get it?

Definitions

Google: the capacity to accept or tolerate delay, trouble, or suffering without getting angry or upset.

Mirriam Webster: the ability to remain calm when dealing with a difficult or annoying situation, task, or person

Greek: macrothymia - longsuffering.

--Ability to take a great deal of punishment from evil people or circumstances without losing one’s temper, without becoming irritated and angry, or without taking vengeance.

It includes the capacity to bear pain or trials without complaint, the ability to forbear under severe provocation, and the self-control which keeps one from acting rashly even though suffering opposition or adversity.

But it’s Fruit.

Fruit is intended to look good.

It is supposed to be sweet and appealing to the eye.

Those definitions do not seem fun at all.

One person wrote, “To have the quality of long-suffering requires you to be long-bothered.”

But if patience is supposed to be be sweet and appealing to the eye, if it is supposed to be something that the world would look at and desire it as a thing that benefits us so much that they want to make it a part of their life, it has to be more than just grinning and bearing the atrocities that happen to us.

Two frogs fell into a tub of cream.

One looked at the high sides of the tub which were too difficult to crawl over and said, “It is hopeless.”

So he resigned himself to death, relaxed, and sank to the bottom.

The other one determined to keep swimming as long as he could.

“Something might happen,” he said.

He kept kicking and churning, and finally he found himself on a solid platform of butter and jumped to safety.

It should be clear that this kind of patience is not merely passive resignation.

It is not the patience which sits down with its head bowed and lets things descend upon it, inactive until the storm is past.

Rather, it is the spirit that can bear things, not simply with resignation, but with blazing hope.

This patience comes from the fact that we know that in the end God is in control and we win with Him.

the enemy comes — stuff happens and we suffer

in the end, the Lord comes in like a flood.

Here’s the standard - God always wins and we win with him.

when we understand that, in the middle of persistent trouble we have persistent hope that keeps us in the battle without acting according to the flesh.

What Patience looks like.

Our World.

Necessity is not the mother of invention - laziness is.

Our world is always seeking ways to make thing happen easier and faster and we disguise it by calling it efficient.

Fast food, Fast internet, faster cars....

I had a college professor that refused to go to McDonald’s because it ruined the food industry - of course he wanted food fast and now so he would go to other fast food places - just not McDonald’s.

Fast does not always mean better, it only means faster.

Anything that is worth having is worth waiting for.

Sometimes that thing that you are suffering under is the very opportunity to receive the glorious thing God is intending for us.

This is the greatest benefit and warning.

Can I tell you that this verse is not about talking to the Devil?

It’s not about binding sickness or things that cause trouble.... It’s way bigger.

Jesus is telling Peter that the church rises and falls on walking in step with the Spirit and pointing to the fact that Jesus is the Son of God…

Here’s how that works...

In your flesh you will not walk in the Fruits of Love joy, peace, patience.

Instead you are bound by hatred, depression and discouragement, chaos, impatience and frustration… you are bound.

Get loosed by walking in the Spirit.

Watch this, if you lash out in hatred, depression and discouragement, chaos, impatience and frustration, you not only bind yourself, but you bind them.

Instead of being a demonstration of what God does in a persons life, you tie them up.

People will do bad things either through intention or ignorance.

You get to determine how to respond.

If you respond with impatience (whether they may deserve) you bind them.

If you respond with patience, you open a door for them to turn to Him.

You loose blessings in heaven.

To be patient is to be someone who can bear with or put up with others.

To have the quality of long-suffering requires you to be long-bothered.

That is the par that we do not wish to learn; in fact, this is what we spend a great effort to avoid.

While we want to teach others and see them learn, share the gospel and see it embraced, and help others who eagerly accept and apply our good advice, we oftentimes grow impatient when they do not.
