When they crossed over
A quick look back before we look forward.
Jesus walked on water (Mk6:45-52)
Jesus see’s the apostles straining at the oars of life and takes a walk out to them, but not to them until they cry out to Him.
Immediately He brings calm to the storm and they get to the other side, just as Jesus had promised.
Jesus fed the 5000 (Mk6:33-44)
In time Jesus wanted to get away to a secluded place with his disciples, Jesus see’s the crowd and has compassion for them and meets the physical need and a lesson to the disciples (though in our story today you will see they did not learn from it)
Sinful History shown (Mk6:14-32)
Reflecting back on history of a sinful man who was haunted by his sinful choices.
We learned we no longer have to be a prisoner to our past and we have to step out of the past through repentance and embrace what the Lord has done and will continue to do in our lives.
Limited commission/mission (MK6:7-13)
Their limited commission with direction on where to go, what to do, instructions on what they were going to need in the future.
We looked at trying to find the right balance in ministering before knocking the dust off our sandals and moving on.
Unwelcome homecoming (Mk6:1-6)
It had been a year or so and Jesus was heading home again, this time hopefully to a better reception, but that was not the case.
It ended up with the people in his hometown wanting to kill Him and he left there not to return again.
Jesus wondered at the peoples unbelief.
But as we notice in the rest of the stories there is some unbelief too, see if you see the tread.
What was the unbelief in the limited commission (Mk6:7-13)?
What is the unbelief in the sinful history (Mk6:14-32)?
What is the unbelief in the feeding of 5000 (Mk6:33-44)?
What is the unbelief in the Walking on water (Mk6:45-52)?
So we have seen some miracles performed after His homecoming and today we are looking at the healings in Gennesaret and they will clearly show:
The success of Jesus healing ministry
The purpose of Jesus healing ministry
The significance of the healing ministry
We will interweave the healing ministry of Peter and Paul too as we go.
So now, let’s look at the passage together and then will get into the healing ministry.
Mk6:
What do you see, what do you notice, what sticks out to you?
The Setting
`Do you remember the reception that the people had in Gennesaret that last time Jesus was there (Mk5:1-20)?
Today we have a different reception, but beyond that, let’s look at a little about this area too.
Mk5:15
Before they wanted Him to go, what is the reception now (MK6:54-56)?
Now, we need to notice something else, where were the Apostles sent to go to when they got on the boat (MK6:45)?
What happened in the interim on why they did not reach their destination (Mk6:47-48)
They were heading to Bethsaida (6:45); but ended up in Gennesaret (6:53) after passing through a storm.
But why there?
Because they did not learn from the miracle of the loaves (6:52).
They needed another lesson in faith.
(Insert picture sea of Galilee - already saved on computer)
Gennesaret is a little south of Capernaum, Jesus ministry hub, and it is a densely populated area on the northwest side of the Sea of Galilee.
Beyond being densely populated it had a fertile plain and included the city of Taricheae.
Josephus describes it as a being a beautiful area, producing abundant varieties of fruit and trees.
So if it be because of the lesson they needed to learn or the wind, Again, Jesus makes the most of every situation.
Setting for other healing ministries
Peter in Jerusalem (Act5:14-16)
Peter during the early days of the church, when it was a local church still.
Paul in Ephesus (Act19:11-12)
Paul in Ephesus (Act19:11-12)
Paul in his extended stay in Ephesus during the 3rd missionary trip
So in the populated areas, deserted areas, no matter the setting you can see the work of God in the miracles of Jesus, Peter and Paul.
Each had success.
Success of the healings
Faith comes by hearing, hearing the words of Christ, right?
Well in the healing ministries they started here with hearing, believing, receiving.
It was all inclusive, watch as we develop on this.
Gennesaret
When people heard Jesus was there, they came and saw (Mk6:54-56)
What else did they do (Mk6:54-56)?
They ran about the whole country
They brought people who were sick
They laid them in the marketplaces, or anywhere else
They believed that if they could just touch the fringe of His cloak the would be healed.
Where did this happen (Mk5:56)?
Villages, cities or countryside, wherever Jesus was they brought Him
Who was healed (Mk5:56)?
All who touched Him were being healed (cured)
Success of healing in other places
Peter in Jerusalem (Act5:14-16)
Similar to Gennesaret the brought the sick out into the streets (marketplaces) on beds, couches (pallets)
Not just people in Jerusalem but fro the surrounding ares (entire country).
And they were all healed.
Paul in Ephesus (Act19:11-12)
God worked miracles by hands of Paul (with Jesus just touching His cloak)
Even handkerchiefs brought from his body (Paul’s) the sick would be healed.
You can see it implied that all were healed
If there were healing ministries that had the power that Jesus, Peter and Paul had, with the success they had, we would see it, hear about it, everyday wouldn’t we?
But there is reasons behind the healings and lets look at that too.
Significance of the healings
God does not do things without purpose.
God always had a purpose, a plan, a scheme, with foreknowledge these healing happen with a purpose, both had their significance.
