(Super Bowl Sunday evening)

Intro: Can you see it?  Way down there is one group opposing another.  First this group has the upper hand in the engagement and they push the other group back.  Then the tide of the contest changes and the other group pushes the line back.  Way up here the onlookers are standing with arms raised as they watch what is happening.

Am I talking about the Pittsburg Steelers and the Seattle Seahawks as they begin to do battle on the football field in the Super Bowl game?

Actually I am trying to recount a story from the Bible

You will find the story in Exodus Exodus 17:8

The contest with the descendants of Amalek

A.      The contestants

A name that is no longer known in history

A tribe of people who dog the path of God’s people for generations

Several mentions of them throughout the course of the Old Testament

B.       Timing of the contest

After Israel crosses the Red sea, before They come to Mt. Sinai

       C.  The meaning of the contest

The name of the Lord is Jehovah Nissi – The Lord our Banner

We go under the banner of the Lord  of Hosts
