19 And we know that we are of God, and the whole world lieth in wickedness.

LIETH

2749 κεῖμαι [keimai /ki·mahee/] v. Middle voice of a primary verb; TDNT 3:654; TDNTA 425; GK 3023; 26 occurrences; AV translates as “lie” nine times, “be laid” six times, “be set” six times, “be appointed” once, “be” once, “be made” once, “laid up” once, and “there” once. 1 to lie. 1a of an infant. 1b of one buried. 1c of things that quietly cover some spot. 1c1 of a city situated on a hill. 1d of things put or set in any place, in ref. to which we often use “to stand”. 1d1 of vessels, of a throne, of the site of a city, of grain and other things laid up together, of a foundation. 2 metaph. 2a to be (by God’s intent) set, i.e. destined, appointed. 2b of laws, to be made, laid down. 2c lies in the power of the evil one, i.e. is held in subjection by the devil.[2]

WICKEDNESS

4190 πονηρός [poneros /pon·ay·ros/] adj. From a derivative of 4192; TDNT 6:546; TDNTA 912; GK 4505; 76 occurrences; AV translates as “evil” 51 times, “wicked” 10 times, “wicked one” six times, “evil things” twice, and translated miscellaneously seven times. 1 full of labours, annoyances, hardships. 1a pressed and harassed by labours. 1b bringing toils, annoyances, perils; of a time full of peril to Christian faith and steadfastness; causing pain and trouble. 2 bad, of a bad nature or condition. 2a in a physical sense: diseased or blind. 2b in an ethical sense: evil wicked, bad. Additional Information: The word is used in the nominative case in Mt. 6:13. This usually denotes a title in the Greek. Hence Christ is saying, deliver us from “The Evil”, and is probably referring to Satan. [3]

We know that the whole world;

lies under the sway of,

and is being swayed by Satan,

We know that the whole world;

is under the inclination & deflection of Satan,

We know that the whole world;

is diseased & blind,

is evil, wicked, & bad,

We know that the whole world;

is under the controlling influence of Satan,

lies in the power of Satan,

is held in subjection by Satan, (thru sin) the wicked one (servant of)

Satan is ruler of this world subject to God

World -- the ungodly multitude; the whole mass of men alienated from God, [4]

We can see the sway of Satan on this world in many ways and areas.

            Death and disease

            Crime and violence

            Hatred and cruelty

            Selfishness and greed

            Evil and wickedness

            Unrighteousness and ungodliness

            Perversion and immorality

            Blasphemy and slander

            Disrespect and carelessness

            Pride and arrogance

            Laziness and dependency

            Unforgiveness and vengeance

            Unloving and uncaring

            Dishonesty and untrustworthiness

We can see the sway of Satan in this country by;

            The removal of prayer from the school

            The removal of God from the public arena

            The removal of the Ten Commandments from public property

            The teaching of evolution rather than creation

            The teaching and promotion of the homosexual lifestyle

            The killing of unborn children

            The killing of the elderly

            The rejection of the Bible

            The opposition to the nativity scene

            The slanderous stories & movies about Christ

            The saturation of our society with sexual content

            The rejection and denial of God

            The use of drugs and alcohol

            The mass killing of innocent people

            The lack of respect for others

            The lack of a moral conscience

But just as the world is characteristic of Satan we should be characteristic of Christ, the disciples, and the word of God.

Ezra 10:11 11 Now therefore, make confession to the Lord God of your fathers, and do His will; separate yourselves from the peoples of the land,

Ex. 33:16   So we shall be separate, Your people and I, from all the people who are upon the face of the earth.”

Lev. 20:26 26 And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated you from the peoples, that you should be Mine.

2 Cor. 6:17 17 Therefore

                                    “Come out from among them

                                    And be separate, says the Lord.

                                    Do not touch what is unclean,

                                    And I will receive you.”

We should have fellowship with the Father, Son, and fellow Christians

1John 1:3     that which we have seen and heard we declare to you, that you also may have fellowship with us; and truly our fellowship is with the Father and with His Son Jesus Christ.

fellowship the share which one has in anything, participation, intercourse, fellowship, intimacy. [5]

We should posses a Joy within

1 John 1:4 4 And these things we write to you that your joy may be full.

            Worldly people are unhappy

We should live our life in & according to Spiritual understanding, knowledge, wisdom

1 John 1:6  6 If we say that we have fellowship with Him, and walk in darkness, we lie and do not practice the truth.

Living according to the Word of God we will have fellowship with others and our sins are forgiven

1John 1:7 7 But if we walk in the light as He is in the light, we have fellowship with one another, and the blood of Jesus Christ His Son cleanses us from all sin.

            Forgiving and Forgiveness

We must acknowledge our sin, not to is to call God a liar, & His word isn’t in us

1John 1:8,10  8 If we say that we have no sin, we deceive ourselves, and the truth is not in us.

10 If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.

If we confess our sin He will forgive our sin and restore us to a right relationship with the Father

1John 1:9 9 If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.

The purpose for these scriptures

1 John 2:1     My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin.

Hosea 4:6   6     My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge.

                                    Because you have rejected knowledge,

                                    I also will reject you from being priest for Me;

                                    Because you have forgotten the law of your God,

                                    I also will forget your children.

Jesus paid our sin debt for us

1 John 2:2 And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.

The proof of our relationship with Christ & the Father is being like them

1John 2:3-6    3 Now by this we know that we know Him, if we keep His commandments. 4 He who says, “I know Him,” and does not keep His commandments, is a liar, and the truth is not in him. 5 But whoever keeps His word, truly the love of God is perfected in him. By this we know that we are in Him. 6 He who says he abides in Him ought himself also to walk just as He walked.

1walk \ˈwȯk\ vb

[partly fr. ME walken (past welk, pp. walken), fr. OE wealcan to roll, toss, journey about (past weolc, pp. wealcen) and partly fr. ME walkien (past walked, pp. walked), fr. OE wealcian to roll up, muffle up; akin to MD walken to knead, press, full] vi bef. 12c

Walk just as He walked – do as He did, think as He thought, talk as He talked, love, forgive, be compassionate, longsuffering, pure, holy, righteous, honest, just,

The saved can not hate others

1John 2:9-11  9 He who says he is in the light, and hates his brother, is in darkness until now. 10 He who loves his brother abides in the light, and there is no cause for stumbling in him. 11 But he who hates his brother is in darkness and walks in darkness, and does not know where he is going, because the darkness has blinded his eyes.

HATE     3404 miseá (16), to detest, to love less, to persecute

Hatred in our heart causes us to sin against God – it makes us stumble

The Spiritual state of a Christian

1John 2:12-14  12     I write to you, little children,

Because your sins are forgiven you for His name’s sake.

13     I write to you, fathers,

Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.

                                    I write to you, young men,

Because you have overcome the wicked one.

                                    I write to you, little children,

Because you have known the Father.

14     I have written to you, fathers,

Because you have known Him who is from the beginning.

                                    I have written to you, young men,

Because you are strong, and the word of God abides in you,

                                    And you have overcome the wicked one.

The Spiritual state of a Christian

·        Your sins are forgiven

·        Have known Him who is from the beginning

·        Have known the Father

·        You are strong

·        The word of God abides in you,

·        And you have overcome the wicked one.

1 John 5:4   4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

The things of this world are not the Christians’ top priorities

1John 2:15-17 15 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the lust of the flesh, the lust of the eyes, and the pride of life—is not of the Father but is of the world. 17 And the world is passing away, and the lust of it; but he who does the will of God abides forever.

We are to place God first and foremost in our lives;

Anything that comes between us and God is considered an idol.

            The lust of the flesh, Physical enjoyments or pleasures

            The lust of the eyes,   things, possessions

            The pride of life, Prestige, power, popularity, prominence

We can not love or serve both, because both require our full dedication

Deceptions for the Christian to avoid

1 John 2:18-23  18 Little children, it is the last hour; and as you have heard that the Antichrist is coming, even now many antichrists have come, by which we know that it is the last hour. 19 They went out from us, but they were not of us; for if they had been of us, they would have continued with us; but they went out that they might be made manifest, that none of them were of us.

   (claims to be of Christ & His church but words, actions, and teachings say otherwise)

20 But you have an anointing from the Holy One, and you know all things. 21 I have not written to you because you do not know the truth, but because you know it, and that no lie is of the truth.

          (if not in agreement with  Bible, is not truth)

22 Who is a liar but he who denies that Jesus is the Christ? He is antichrist who denies the Father and the Son. 23 Whoever denies the Son does not have the Father either; he who acknowledges the Son has the Father also.

        (failure to acknowledge Jesus as the Christ)

Stick to the Truth; Jesus Christ and His Word for Eternal Life

1John 2:24-25  24 Therefore let that abide in you which you heard from the beginning. If what you heard from the beginning abides in you, you also will abide in the Son and in the Father. 25 And this is the promise that He has promised us—eternal life.

The way of truth

1John 2:26-27  26 These things I have written to you concerning those who try to 6deceive you. 27 But the anointing which you have received from Him abides in you, and you do not need that anyone teach you; but as the same anointing teaches you concerning all things, and is true, and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you will abide in Him.

The Holy Spirit will teach & lead us into truth if we submit to Him

Adhere to the teaching of scripture to stand before Christ guiltless

1John 2:28-29  28 And now, little children, abide in Him, that when He appears, we may have confidence and not be ashamed before Him at His coming. 29 If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone who practices righteousness is born of Him.

Because of the love God has for us, we should strive to be pure

1John 3:1  Behold what manner of love the Father has bestowed on us, that we should be called children of God! Therefore the world does not know us, because it did not know Him. 2 Beloved, now we are children of God; and it has not yet been revealed what we shall be, but we know that when He is revealed, we shall be like Him, for we shall see Him as He is. 3 And everyone who has this hope in Him purifies himself, just as He is pure.

Don’t be deceived, Sin is disobedience; Those that practice sin are of Satan, those that practice righteousness are of God and Christ was sinless

1John 3:4-10  4 Whoever commits sin also commits lawlessness, and sin is lawlessness. 5 And you know that He was manifested to take away our sins, and in Him there is no sin. 6 Whoever abides in Him does not sin. Whoever sins has neither seen Him nor known Him.

7 Little children, let no one deceive you. He who practices righteousness is righteous, just as He is righteous. 8 He who sins is of the devil, for the devil has sinned from the beginning. For this purpose the Son of God was manifested, that He might destroy the works of the devil. 9 Whoever has been born of God does not sin, for His seed remains in him; and he cannot sin, because he has been born of God. 10 In this the children of God and the children of the devil are manifest: Whoever does not practice righteousness is not of God, nor is he who does not love his brother.

Don’t be surprised when the world hates you because you are under the sway of Christ.

1John 3:13   13 Do not marvel, my brethren, if the world hates you.

The assurance that we are under the sway of Christ is love shown to our brother.

1John3:16-19 16 By this we know love, because He laid down His life for us. And we also ought to lay down our lives for the brethren. 17 But whoever has this world’s goods, and sees his brother in need, and shuts up his heart from him, how does the love of God abide in him?

18 My little children, let us not love in word or in tongue, but in deed and in truth. 19 And by this we know that we are of the truth, and shall assure our hearts before Him.

Answered pray is assurance that we are obedient and under the sway of Christ.

1John 3:2222 And whatever we ask we receive from Him, because we keep His commandments and do those things that are pleasing in His sight. 23 And this is His commandment: that we should believe on the name of His Son Jesus Christ and love one another, as He gave us commandment.

The Holy Spirit is assurance that God is with us and we are under the sway of Christ.

1 John 3:24   24 Now he who keeps His commandments abides in Him, and He in him. And by this we know that He abides in us, by the Spirit whom He has given us.

John 14:15-17 15 “If you love Me, keep My commandments. 16 And I will pray the Father, and He will give you another Helper, that He may abide with you forever— 17 the Spirit of truth, whom the world cannot receive, because it neither sees Him nor knows Him; but you know Him, for He dwells with you and will be in you.

Rom. 8:9      9 But you are not in the flesh but in the Spirit, if indeed the Spirit of God dwells in you. Now if anyone does not have the Spirit of Christ, he is not His.

Rom. 8:14,16   14 For as many as are led by the Spirit of God, these are sons of God.

 16 The Spirit Himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God,

1 Thess. 4:8    8 Therefore he who rejects this does not reject man, but God, who has also given us His Holy Spirit.

Lev. 20:26 26 And you shall be holy to Me, for I the Lord am holy, and have separated

12    The things of this world are not the Christians’ top priorities

The lust of the flesh, Physical enjoyments or pleasures

The lust of the eyes,   things, possessions

The pride of life, Prestige, power, popularity, prominence

We can not love or serve both, because both require our full dedication

   Claims to be of Christ & His church but words, actions, and teachings say otherwise

22.  The Holy Spirit is assurance that God is with us and we are under the sway of Christ.

Tonight’s study begins with 1 John 5:1

1 John 5:1-21

Vv 1-3   Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. 2 By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. 3 For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome.

Being under the sway of Christ is to adhere to the doctrine of;

  • The acceptance of Jesus as the Christ is required for salvation.
  • Love for the Father and Son is inseparable; you can’t love one w/o loving the other nor can you accept one w/o the other.
  • To love the brethren is to love God and keep His commandments.
  • Because to love God is to keep His commandments; we can’t say we love God and not endeavor to obey his word.
  • Gods’ commandments aren’t a heavy load to carry but obeying his word removes our burdens, they do good to our soul.                                                                     (obedience = blessings: disobedience = cursing)

Vv 4-5  4 For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world— 1our faith. 5 Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?

V 6-8   6 This is He who came by water and blood—Jesus Christ; not only by water, but by water and blood. And it is the Spirit who bears witness, because the Spirit is truth. 7 For there are three that bear witness 2in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one. 8 And there are three that bear witness on earth: the Spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree as one.

Being under the sway of Christ is to;    Be under the water and blood of Jesus Christ

1. We are inwardly and outwardly defiled.

out of his pierced side forthwith there came water and blood, Jn. 19:34, 35.

Now this water and blood are comprehensive of all that is necessary and effectual to our salvation.

By the water our souls are washed and purified for heaven

By the blood God is glorified, his law is honoured,

Whom God hath set forth, or purposed, or proposed, a propitiation through faith in his blood, or a propitiation in or by his blood through faith, to declare his righteousness, that he may be just, and the justifier of him that believeth in Jesus, Rom. 3:25, 26. By the blood we are justified, reconciled, and presented righteous to God. By the blood, the curse of the law being satisfied, and purifying Spirit is obtained for the internal ablution of our natures.[17]

Being under the sway of Christ is to;    have the witness of the Holy Spirit within us

The Holy Spirit bears witness to the person and work of Christ

John 16:13-15   13 However, when He, the Spirit of truth, has come, He will guide you into all truth; for He will not speak on His own authority, but whatever He hears He will speak; and He will tell you things to come. 14 He will glorify Me, for He will take of what is Mine and declare it to you. 15 All things that the Father has are Mine. Therefore I said that He will take of Mine and declare it to you.

v 7     7 For there are three that bear witness in heaven: the Father, the Word, and the Holy Spirit; and these three are one.

Being under the sway of Christ is to;

Have the heavenly witness of the Trinity;

God the Father, Son, and the Holy Spirit

Being under the sway of Christ is to;

Have a trinity of witnesses on earth

v. 8 And there are three that bear witness on earth, the spirit, the water, and the blood; and these three agree in one,

Spirit; that spirit of man that is regenerated, born again, a new creation

The water; the washing or cleansing as portrayed in the act of baptism

and the blood; the blood of Christ by which we are cleansed, the shed blood of Christ – our Passover Lamb, the life of Christ given to pay our debt of sin

vv 9-13   9 If we receive the witness of men, the witness of God is greater; for this is the witness of God which He has testified of His Son. 10 He who believes in the Son of God has the witness in himself; he who does not believe God has made Him a liar, because he has not believed the testimony that God has given of His Son. 11 And this is the testimony: that God has given us eternal life, and this life is in His Son. 12 He who has the Son has life; he who does not have the Son of God does not have life. 13 These things I have written to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life, and that you may continue to believe in the name of the Son of God.

Being under the sway of Christ is to;    Take the witness of God over that of men

Believers have the witness, the Holy Spirit and a renewed spirit within them

Not to believe in the Son of God is call God a liar because they refuse to believe Gods’ testimony – the Bible

Vv 14-17    14 Now this is the confidence that we have in Him, that if we ask anything according to His will, He hears us. 15 And if we know that He hears us, whatever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we have asked of Him.

16 If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death. There is sin leading to death. I do not say that he should pray about that. 17 All unrighteousness is sin, and there is sin not leading to death.

Being under the sway of Christ is to;

should have confidence in Him,

ask according to His will,

answered prayer

Pray for our brothers and sisters in Christ

If anyone sees his brother sinning a sin which does not lead to death, he will ask, and He will give him life for those who commit sin not leading to death.

V18  18 We know that whoever is born of God does not sin; but he who has been born of God keeps 6 7himself, and the wicked one does not touch him.

Being under the sway of Christ is to;   guard our actions, our character

he who has been born of God keeps himself, -- guard our actions, our character

vv19-21  19 We know that we are of God, and the whole world lies under the sway of the wicked one.

20 And we know that the Son of God has come and has given us an understanding, that we may know Him who is true; and we are in Him who is true, in His Son Jesus Christ. This is the true God and eternal life.

21 Little children, keep yourselves from idols. Amen.

Being under the sway of Christ is to;

See the sway of Satan over the world

Posses an understanding of the big picture

Have personal relationship with God and have continual fellowship with Him
