Keeping Commitments
This section of the scripture would have remained irrelevant to Christians today because oaths and swearing are not common in the church or at home.
But today we have oaths made privately and publicly, does this make parents or husbands independent of the commitments and promises made by a member of the household/family? This may be some how a matter of debate today but for the Jews it wasn't. In the OT, the husband was responsible for the oaths and promises or swearing and event commitments made by his wife or daughters but what about the sons?
The answer is almost the same both men and women were not to break their words or promises, they were to honor the Lord through their words. But God was so gracious that, women and daughters could be forgiven of their thoughtful words but only when the head of the family overheard them speak and he may nullify those oaths and commitments.
What we see here is the gracious and compassionate character of our God. Even today God is gracious and compassionate, he tells us to speak graciously with kindness and compassion, with love and grace to build one another. Encouragement is sometimes the word we use but it should not be empty promises or distortion of God’s truth.
Keeping our words may cost us everything but the reward is even greater. We accept to endure because of commitment like Job in the Bible did. Today Al Mohler celebrates his 25 years of presidency at SBTS but he had to endure many things. He received a vote of no confidence but didn't quit. Hebrew proved tough but none of us quit and things will get better. Let’s us keep our commitments.
