MEMBERS IN PARTICULAR
TEXT: “Now you are the body of Christ and individually members [“in particular,” ASV] of it” ().
INTRODUCTION: From Paul’s thinking as recorded in , he is saying that God created no unnecessary member in the human body. Each has its own function. So also it is in the church. Every member of the church body is an individual and has a function in the church body.
In the English dictionary, the word particular has several widely varying meanings, one of which is expressed in the word “careful.” In this sense the word particular is used in this message.
I. Each member is presumed to have had an experience that includes:
A. The fact of salvation by receiving the Lord Jesus Christ into his heart (see ).
B. The new birth (see ).
C. The indwelling Holy Spirit (see , ; ). Such is this member in particular.
II. Members in particular are such because:
A. They are particular about being led by the Holy Spirit in all things.
B. They are particular about their loyalty to Jesus Christ and His church by being faithful to the all-important matter of church attendance.
C. He is a member in particular because he is particular about witnessing about Jesus to men.
D. A member in particular is that because he is particular about keeping alive his relationship with Jesus in daily living.
E. He is a member in particular because he is particular not to get “lost in the crowd.”
CONCLUSION: The Lord will reward His servants according to their faithfulness. “Well done, good and faithful servant.”
