Philippians 2:19-30

Timothy and Epaphroditus

19 a Wish (Pos.) I hope in the Lord Jesus to send Timothy to you soon,

b Purpose so that I too may be cheered by news of you.

20 a Reason (19a-19b) For I have no one like him,

b Characterization who will be genuinely concerned for your welfare.

21 Reason (20a-20b) For they all seek their own interests, not those of Jesus Christ.

22 a Affirmation But you know Timothy’s proven worth,

b Cause how

c Manner (d) as a son with a father

d Continuation (b) he has served with me in the gospel.

23 a Wish (Pos.) I hope therefore to send him

b Temporal just as soon as I see how it will go with me,

24 Affirmation and I trust in the Lord that shortly I myself will come also.

25 a Affirmation I have thought it necessary

26 a Cause (25a-25g) for he has been longing for you all

b Experience and has been distressed

c Validation (26a-26b) because you heard that he was ill.

27 a Reason Indeed he was ill, near to death.

b Correction But God had mercy on him,

c Rejection and not only on him

d Suggestion but on me also,

e Purpose lest I should have sorrow upon sorrow.

28 a Inference I am the more eager to send him, therefore,

b Purpose that

d Continuation (b) you may rejoice

c Background-Experience (d) at seeing him again,

d Continuation (b) and that I may be less anxious.

29 a Command So receive him in the Lord with all joy,

b Command and honor such men,

30 a Cause for he nearly died for the work of Christ,

b Expansion risking his life

c Purpose to complete what was lacking in your service to me.
