Intro:

AG: I have a question for you this morning.
What is a Christian?
A mind through which Christ Thinks.
A voice through which Christ Speaks.
A Hand through which Christ Helps.
A Heart through which Christ Loves.
TS: John has been detailing evidence that we are God’s children. He has pointed our love for God is demonstrated by how we live and treat each others,
The two should be so closely tied that it leaves little doubt.
RS:
The Apologetics Study Bible: Real Questions, Straight Answers, Stronger Faith Article: Can a Christian Have Assurance of Salvation? (Chad Owen Brand)

5:1–5 Real Christianity is evidenced by (1) right belief (vv. 1, 5), (2) obedience to God (vv. 2–3), and (3) love (vv. 1–3).

Right Belief

Doctrine matters.
Doctrine- what we believe and what we teach matters.
We believe that the Bible is the only guide for our beliefs and practices.
Off all subjects in the Bible, Jesus is the most important.
Who He is and what He did and what He continues to do.
Look verse one with me and watch.
> What do you believe today? How does it control you?
1 John 5:1 ESV
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him.
everyone who believes Jesus is the Messiah.
Messiah is the Anointed One. God’s promised deliverer
Saving faith leads to love for the Father and His children
1 John 5:5 ESV
Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
Now connect the dots; verse one gives this message
1 jn 5:1, 5
verse 5 asks
1 John 5:5 ESV
Who is it that overcomes the world except the one who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
Now John points out that Jesus was just the Messiah, HE was GOD!
God the son, took on flesh for us, lived a sinless life and died to pay for our sins. He victoriously rose again and went back to heaven where he is preparing a home for us and interceding with the Father.
, “Who is the one who conquers the world, but the one who believes that Jesus is…”
It is only in the experience of trusting Christ that we can become real live conquerors, real successes, and real winners.
Because here is the truth; if we truly believe in Jesus the entirety of our lives will be changed, redirected, TRANSFORMED.
What do you believe today? How does it control you?

Obedience to God

1 John 5:2–3 ESV
By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
Obedience to God’s commandments.
There are several estimates of the number of commands. Much of it has to do with interpretation and if you count the duplicates individually or all as one.
Guess what? It is far more than 10!
Orthodox Judaism: 613 in OT
NT: 1050

In the Bible we find God’s will for our lives revealed.
The unsaved considers the Bible an impossible book, mainly because they does not understand its spiritual message ().
1 Corinthians 2:14 ESV
The natural person does not accept the things of the Spirit of God, for they are folly to him, and he is not able to understand them because they are spiritually discerned.
An immature Christian considers the demands of the Bible to be burdensome. He is somewhat like a little child who is learning to obey, and who asks, “Why do I have to do that?” or “Wouldn’t it be better to do this?”
But a Christian who experiences God’s perfecting love finds himself enjoying the Word of God and truly loving it. He does not read the Bible as a textbook, but as a love letter.

reveals the attitude we are discussing:
In all but 2 verses the Psalmist mentions the word of God. He clearly loves it! Notice a few:
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Nine: Love, Honor, and Obey (1 John 4:17–5:5)

“O how love I Thy Law!” (Ps. 119:97) He rejoices in the Law (Ps. 119:14, 162) and delights in it (Ps. 119:16, 24). It is honey to his taste (Ps. 119:103). In fact, he turns God’s Law into a song: “Thy statutes have been my songs in the house of my pilgrimage” (Ps. 119:54).

Psalm 119:97 ESV
Oh how I love your law! It is my meditation all the day.
Psalm 119:14 ESV
In the way of your testimonies I delight as much as in all riches.
NT: 1050
Psalm 119:16 ESV
I will delight in your statutes; I will not forget your word.
Ps 119:10
Psalm 119:103 ESV
How sweet are your words to my taste, sweeter than honey to my mouth!
Ps 119:
Psalm 119:54 ESV
Your statutes have been my songs in the house of my sojourning.
Ps 119:
Our attitude toward the word, reveals our heart.
Obeying God should be a pleasure to us
We know what our loving Father expects and should delight in pleasing Him.

Love

1 John 5:1–3 ESV
Everyone who believes that Jesus is the Christ has been born of God, and everyone who loves the Father loves whoever has been born of him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and obey his commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep his commandments. And his commandments are not burdensome.
A woman visited a newspaper editor’s office, hoping to sell him some poems she had written.
A woman visited a newspaper editor’s office, hoping to sell him some poems she had written.
“What are your poems about?” the editor asked.
“They’re about love!” gushed the poetess.
The editor settled back in his chair and said, “Well, read me a poem. The world could certainly use a lot more love!”
The poem she read was filled with moons and Junes and other sticky sentiments, and it was more than the editor could take.
“I’m sorry,” he said, “but you just don’t know what love is all about! It’s not moonlight and roses. It’s sitting up all night at a sickbed, or working extra hours so the kids can have new shoes. The world doesn’t need your brand of poetical love. It needs some good old-fashioned practical love.”
D.L. Moody often said, “Every Bible should be bound in shoe leather.” We show our love to God, not by empty words but by willing works. We are not slaves obeying a master; we are children obeying a Father. And our sin is a family affair.

Love is a theme to which John has often returned.
The two should be so closely tied that it leaves little doubt.
v. 1 If we love the Father, we love His children
The Bible Exposition Commentary Chapter Nine: Love, Honor, and Obey (1 John 4:17–5:5)

Victorious faith is the result of maturing love. The better we come to know and love Jesus Christ, the easier it is to trust Him with the needs and battles of life. It is important that this maturing love become a regular and a practical thing in our daily lives.

How does a believer go about experiencing this kind of love and the blessings that flow from it?

RS:
Cultivate our friendship with Christ
Like Abraham, we must seperate ourselves from the world and follow God
James 2:23 ESV
and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God.
James 2:23 ESV
and the Scripture was fulfilled that says, “Abraham believed God, and it was counted to him as righteousness”—and he was called a friend of God.
Abraham,
That friendship begins to influence all areas of our lives.
Through time spent in prayer and Bible study, we grow more like God.
We spend more time with God’s people and it has an impact on us.
As we grow in friendship with Christ, our love for Him deepens
All are intertwined.
Love and obedience to God
Love for one another.
The more we know Him the better we love Him, and the better we love Him the more like Him we become.
Romans 8:29 ESV
For those whom he foreknew he also predestined to be conformed to the image of his Son, in order that he might be the firstborn among many brothers.
Romand 8:29
That process starts every day.
1 John 3:1–3 ESV
See what kind of love the Father has given to us, that we should be called children of God; and so we are. The reason why the world does not know us is that it did not know him. Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.
It will only end when we stand in heaven with Him.

Conclusion:

Today, are you a real Christian?
I’m not asking if you call yourself one, I’m asking if you really display evidence of your walk with Christ?
Do you have:
Right beliefs
Obedience to God
Love for God and Others
