Jesus - Gods' Saving Act for Humanity - part A
Jesus -- God’s saving act for sinful humanity. 4/01/07 A.M.
Luke 4:16-21
Jesus is the central figure of the New Testament,
His life, death, and resurrection represent for Christians God’s saving act for sinful humanity.
His name (Jesus) and his title (Christ) bear witness to that saving act.
The name ‘Jesus’ is derived from a Hebrew word that means ‘savior’ (see Matt. 1:21),
and the title ‘Christ’ (Heb., ‘messiah’) means ‘anointed,’ and refers to one commissioned by God for a special task.[1]
This was evidenced from His conception to His ascension into heaven
This was evidenced at His conception
Luke 1:35 35 And the angel answered and said to her, “The Holy Spirit will come upon you, and the power of the Highest will overshadow you; therefore, also, that Holy One who is to be born will be called the Son of God.
Mt. 1:2323 “Behold, the virgin shall be with child, and bear a Son, and they shall call His name Immanuel,” which is translated, “God with us.”
This was evidenced at His birth
The Angels Announce Jesus’ Birth and Praise God
Luke 2:10-14
. 10 Then the angel said to them, ……, for behold, I bring you good tidings of great joy which will be to all people. 11 For there is born to you this day in the city of David a Savior, who is Christ the Lord. 12 And this will be the sign to you: You will find a Babe wrapped in swaddling cloths, lying in a manger.”
13 And suddenly there was with the angel a multitude of the heavenly host praising God and saying:
14 “Glory to God in the highest,
And on earth peace, goodwill toward men!”
This was evidenced at Christ’s Dedication
Luke 2:30–32 Simeon said; 30 For my eyes have seen Your salvation
31 Which You have prepared before the face of all peoples,
32 A light to bring revelation to the Gentiles,
And the glory of Your people Israel.”
This was evidenced in His mission and His Purpose
Luke 4:16-2116 So He came to Nazareth, where He had been brought up. And as His custom was, He went into the synagogue on the Sabbath day, and stood up to read. 17 And He was handed the book of the prophet Isaiah. And when He had opened the book, He found the place where it was written:
18 “The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Because He has anointed Me
To preach the gospel to the poor;
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
To proclaim liberty to the captives
And recovery of sight to the blind,
To set at liberty those who are oppressed;
19 To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord.”
20 Then He closed the book, and gave it back to the attendant and sat down. And the eyes of all who were in the synagogue were fixed on Him. 21 And He began to say to them, “Today this Scripture is fulfilled in your hearing.”
The incident is significant for several reasons.
First, it was a public announcement by Jesus of Nazareth that He was the Messiah promised by the prophets.
Second, it suggests two comings of Christ, the first to save, the second to judge.
And third, it illustrates a difficulty in interpreting O.T. prophecy. Predictive passages typically make no clear reference to times and, as in this verse, may link events separated by thousands of years.[2]
“The Spirit of the Lord is upon Me,
Isa. 11:1-3. There shall come forth a Rod from the stem of Jesse,
And a Branch shall grow out of his roots.
2 The Spirit of the Lord shall rest upon Him,
The Spirit of wisdom and understanding,
The Spirit of counsel and might,
The Spirit of knowledge and of the fear of the Lord.
Thus being fully equipped for His mission
Because He has anointed Me
Anoint = to choose by or as if by divine election[3]
He was called the Messiah, the Christ, because he was anointed;
He was chosen, equipped, and sent by the Father
He was anointed Heb. 1:8-9 You have loved righteousness and hated lawlessness;
Therefore God, Your God, has anointed You
With the oil of gladness more than Your companions.”
This refers to the joy of being in the presence & fellowship of the Father
He was sent John 6:38; 10:18
Our Lord Jesus was sent by the Father;
He has sent me;
He was commanded He had a commission from the Father
This command I have received from My Father.”
The Father sent him and gave him commandment. [4]
To preach the gospel to the poor;
To preach the Gospel – The Good News
That God so loved the world that He gave His only begotten Son, that whosoever believeth in Him should not perish but have eternal life
To those that realized their spiritual need – the poor
He has sent Me to heal the brokenhearted,
He was to be a healer.
You can go to heaven with any physical ailments you may have, but you can’t go to heaven with any spiritual ailments that you may have
Rev. 22:15 15 But outside are dogs and sorcerers and sexually immoral and murderers and idolaters, and whoever loves and practices a lie.
He was sent to bind up the broken-hearted,
Those whose hearts are broken because of sin,
Those whose hearts are burdened with the guilt of sin
They are given the gospel of Christ to;
Heal them spiritually of their sin
And physically to comfort, give the peace of God, and hope of salvation
To proclaim liberty to the captives the deliverance from sin and death
To set us free;
liberty 859 ἄφεσις [aphesis /af·es·is/] n f. From 863; TDNT 1:509; TDNTA 88; GK 912; 17 occurrences; AV translates as “remission” nine times, “forgiveness” six times, “deliverance” once, and “liberty” once. 1 release from bondage or imprisonment. 2 forgiveness or pardon, of sins (letting them go as if they had never been committed), remission of the penalty.[5]
From power of sin – we are under grace not under the law
From the fear of death itself – to be absent from the body is to present w/Lord
From the one who had the power of death – He defeated Satan on the cross
He will set you free – being free / be free indeed
He will set you free from;
Whatever confines you
Whatever ever entraps you
Whatever consumes you
Whatever blocks out hope, joy, peace, and happiness
Whatever keeps you from the life that God wants for you
He will set you free from that which holds you
That which ties you
That which chokes you
That which won’t let you go
Whatever controls you
Whether it is drugs, alcohol, lust, greed, unforgiveness, bitterness, envy, jealousy, gossip, hatred, pride, selfishness, perversion,
Whatever it is, it is not God’s will that it rule over you, you may have to deal with it, but it is not to rule over you
God told Cain, Sin lies at the door but it is up to you to rule over it
Gen.4:7 sin lies at the door. And its desire is for you, but you should rule over it.”
My grace is sufficient for you
2Cor. 12:8 8 Concerning this thing I pleaded with the Lord three times that it might depart from me. 9 And He said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for My strength is made perfect in weakness.”
And recovery of sight to the blind,
Isa. 42:7 7 To open blind eyes,
To bring out prisoners from the prison,
Those who sit in darkness from the prison house.
The ability to truly see – the opening of the eyes of our understanding
Spiritual understanding -- I am the Light of the world – walk in the light
To set at liberty those who are 1oppressed;
Recovery of sight to the blind is To see
To set at liberty The way out
Those who are Oppressed = downtrodden
Jesus restores our spiritual eye sight that we may see the way out of our distress
To proclaim the acceptable year of the Lord,
Today is the right time
Today is the day of salvation
Today is the day to be set free
Today is the day to overcome
Today is the day of victory in Jesus
Today is the day to come out from under bondage
Today is the day to rule over sin & Satan
You don’t have to go another day under the control of anything other than the H.S.
And the day of vengeance of our God;
There is coming a day of recompense
To those that are saved – eternal blessings
To those that have not made Jesus the Lord of there life – condemnation
Jesus came that all might come to repentance and be saved
Jesus came to proclaim to us the words of God almighty
