Genesis 3:7–8 NASB95
Then the eyes of both of them were opened, and they knew that they were naked; and they sewed fig leaves together and made themselves loin coverings. They heard the sound of the Lord God walking in the garden in the cool of the day, and the man and his wife hid themselves from the presence of the Lord God among the trees of the garden.
1 John 2:28–29 NASB95
Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.
1 John 2.27-29
1 John 2:27–29 NASB95
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him. Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming. If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.

Introductory Arguments

The coming of the Lord is not for the fainthearted!
It takes real courage to
to believe in something that is yet to take place, and prepare for it
detach oneself from this world and be devoted to Christ
confess that you are waiting for the greatest event that will take place in these end times - the Rapture
invite people get ready for the Lord’s return
Why are there Christians who are confident in their faith and Christians who are ashamed of it?
And why are the others confident in witnessing for gospel?
We are either confident or ashamed!

Origin and Nature of Shame

Shame is a consequence of sin

Shame was not existent in the original psycho of man.
Genesis 2:25 NASB95
And the man and his wife were both naked and were not ashamed.
Genesis 2

Sin brought Shame

It was introduced into the human consciousness by sin.
Adam and Eve were more than ashamed of their nakedness. They were ashamed of their sin
They “hid themselves from the Presence of God”
Sin ---> shame, guilt, embarrassment ---> hiding; covering
because we cannot hide from Him

Shame is the result of failed trust

Eve placed her trust in the words of the serpent
Shame, because they trusted in the words of serpents
Shame, that their “loin coverings” were not up to God’s standards
Adam and Eve trusted in their own idea of “covering”
Shame taught us how to hide behind coverings
Note:
We cover ourselves with our “own righteousness”
Although man has developed callousness and learned to cover his sins, shame continues to plague the human soul.
but our self-righteousness is not acceptable to God
Shame is now a silent admittance of our incapacity to do the right thing and to be accepted before God.
Because of shame, we hide in our “hiding places” like religion, self-righteousness, principles, beliefs and superstitions
Because of shame, we dare not speak our thoughts on the most important issues in life - sin, death, judgment, hell, etc.

But we have nothing to be ashamed of anymore!

God has provided the solution - Jesus Christ!

Romans 9:33 NKJV
As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
Romans 8:1–2 NASB95
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 NASB95
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
2 Corinthians 5:17 NASB95
Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.

God provides the solution - Christ

Christ restores our confidence back to God

Isaiah 28:16 NASB95
Therefore thus says the Lord God, “Behold, I am laying in Zion a stone, a tested stone, A costly cornerstone for the foundation, firmly placed. He who believes in it will not be disturbed.
be in haste; panic; disappointed
Isaiah 4
Romans 9:33 NKJV
As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”

Christ has destroyed the cause of our shame

Our sins are forgiven
Romans 8:1–2 NASB95
Therefore there is now no condemnation for those who are in Christ Jesus. For the law of the Spirit of life in Christ Jesus has set you free from the law of sin and of death.
Colossians 1:13–14 NASB95
For He rescued us from the domain of darkness, and transferred us to the kingdom of His beloved Son, in whom we have redemption, the forgiveness of sins.
Our trust in God is restored

Christ has removed our shame

Romans 9:30 NKJV
What shall we say then? That Gentiles, who did not pursue righteousness, have attained to righteousness, even the righteousness of faith;
Romans 9:33 NKJV
As it is written: “Behold, I lay in Zion a stumbling stone and rock of offense, And whoever believes on Him will not be put to shame.”
John 14:1 NASB95
“Do not let your heart be troubled; believe in God, believe also in Me.
He took care care of our sin problem on the Cross
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.
Mark 11:22 NASB95
And Jesus answered saying to them, “Have faith in God.
He endured the shame for our sakes!
Hebrews 12:2 NASB95
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.

Christ has borne our shame on the cross

Hebrews 12:2 NASB95
fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Christ meets all our needs

John 14:1 NASB95

John 14:13–14 NASB95
“Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son. “If you ask Me anything in My name, I will do it.
Colossians 2:9–10 NKJV
For in Him dwells all the fullness of the Godhead bodily; and you are complete in Him, who is the head of all principality and power.

The “secret” to confidence at the coming of Christ - ABIDE IN HIM!

Mark 11:22 NASB95
And Jesus answered saying to them, “Have faith in God.

Romans 1.16-

Therefore if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creature; the old things passed away; behold, new things have come.
The
2 Timothy 1.
Romans 1:16–17 NASB95
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”
Isaiah 61:1–3 NASB95
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn, To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
Isaiah 61.1-
Unashamed of the testimony of the Lord and his servants
Isaiah 61:6–8 NASB95
But you will be called the priests of the Lord; You will be spoken of as ministers of our God. You will eat the wealth of nations, And in their riches you will boast. Instead of your shame you will have a double portion, And instead of humiliation they will shout for joy over their portion. Therefore they will possess a double portion in their land, Everlasting joy will be theirs. For I, the Lord, love justice, I hate robbery in the burnt offering; And I will faithfully give them their recompense And make an everlasting covenant with them.
Isaiah 61.
2 Timothy 1:7–8 NASB95
For God has not given us a spirit of timidity, but of power and love and discipline. Therefore do not be ashamed of the testimony of our Lord or of me His prisoner, but join with me in suffering for the gospel according to the power of God,

The “secret” to confidence at the coming of Christ

1 Peter 4:16–19 NASB95
but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? And if it is with difficulty that the righteous is saved, what will become of the godless man and the sinner? Therefore, those also who suffer according to the will of God shall entrust their souls to a faithful Creator in doing what is right.

Confidence in drawing near to God in Worship

1 Peter 4.16-18
Hebrews 10:19–22 NASB95
Therefore, brethren, since we have confidence to enter the holy place by the blood of Jesus, by a new and living way which He inaugurated for us through the veil, that is, His flesh, and since we have a great priest over the house of God, let us draw near with a sincere heart in full assurance of faith, having our hearts sprinkled clean from an evil conscience and our bodies washed with pure water.
Hebrews 10.19
Hebrews 10:23–25 NASB95
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for He who promised is faithful; and let us consider how to stimulate one another to love and good deeds, not forsaking our own assembling together, as is the habit of some, but encouraging one another; and all the more as you see the day drawing near.

Confidence in the ministry

2 Timothy 2:15 NASB95
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.

Confidence at the coming of the Lord!

1 John 2:28 NASB95
Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.

Abiding is the key to confidence

The “secret” to confidence at the coming of Christ

ABIDE IN HIM!

To abide means - remain, stay, continue, wait, endure, stand

Abide in Him, because He abides in you

1 John 2:27 NASB95
As for you, the anointing which you received from Him abides in you, and you have no need for anyone to teach you; but as His anointing teaches you about all things, and is true and is not a lie, and just as it has taught you, you abide in Him.
1 John 2.27
the “anointing” is the Holy Spirit
the Holy Spirit teaches us “all things”
our role is to abide in the Anointing and in His “teaching”

Abide in Him means to stay righteous by practicing faith everyday

Remain a believer
1 John 2:29 NASB95
If you know that He is righteous, you know that everyone also who practices righteousness is born of Him.
Romans 1:17 NASB95
For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”

But why abide?

The enemy will try to remind us of our shameful past

NOTE - the following verses tell of our shameful past, and also God’s transforming work
1 Corinthians 6:9–11 NASB95
Or do you not know that the unrighteous will not inherit the kingdom of God? Do not be deceived; neither fornicators, nor idolaters, nor adulterers, nor effeminate, nor homosexuals, nor thieves, nor the covetous, nor drunkards, nor revilers, nor swindlers, will inherit the kingdom of God. Such were some of you; but you were washed, but you were sanctified, but you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and in the Spirit of our God.
Ephesians 2:1–7 NASB95
And you were dead in your trespasses and sins, in which you formerly walked according to the course of this world, according to the prince of the power of the air, of the spirit that is now working in the sons of disobedience. Among them we too all formerly lived in the lusts of our flesh, indulging the desires of the flesh and of the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, even as the rest. But God, being rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in our transgressions, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up with Him, and seated us with Him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the ages to come He might show the surpassing riches of His grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.
Ephesians 2.1
Titus 3:3–7 NASB95
For we also once were foolish ourselves, disobedient, deceived, enslaved to various lusts and pleasures, spending our life in malice and envy, hateful, hating one another. But when the kindness of God our Savior and His love for mankind appeared, He saved us, not on the basis of deeds which we have done in righteousness, but according to His mercy, by the washing of regeneration and renewing by the Holy Spirit, whom He poured out upon us richly through Jesus Christ our Savior, so that being justified by His grace we would be made heirs according to the hope of eternal life.

Abiding means you embrace everything that God is and God does - you are not ashamed!

Unashamed of the Gospel
Romans 1:16–17 NASB95
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith to faith; as it is written, “But the righteous man shall live by faith.”
Isaiah 61:1–3 NASB95

So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified.
Unashamed of the Christian way of life
1 Peter 4:16–19 NASB95
but if anyone suffers as a Christian, he is not to be ashamed, but is to glorify God in this name. For it is time for judgment to begin with the household of God; and if it begins with us first, what will be the outcome for those who do not obey the gospel of God? Unashamed in drawing near to God in Worship
Hebrews 10:19–22 NASB95

Unashamed of the ministry
2 Timothy 2:15 NASB95
Be diligent to present yourself approved to God as a workman who does not need to be ashamed, accurately handling the word of truth.
Unashamed of believing in and waiting for the Rapture!
1 John 2:28 NASB95
Now, little children, abide in Him, so that when He appears, we may have confidence and not shrink away from Him in shame at His coming.

Abiding

The “abiding anointing” gives us the confidence we need

The “abiding anointing” gives us the confidence we need

The Anointing ENDS our miserable condition under sin
Isaiah 61.1-
Isaiah 61:1–2 NASB95
The Spirit of the Lord God is upon me, Because the Lord has anointed me To bring good news to the afflicted; He has sent me to bind up the brokenhearted, To proclaim liberty to captives And freedom to prisoners; To proclaim the favorable year of the Lord And the day of vengeance of our God; To comfort all who mourn,
no more brokenhearted
no longer captives
no more mourning
The anointing REPLACES our shame with glorious things from God!
Isaiah 61:3–7 NASB95
To grant those who mourn in Zion, Giving them a garland instead of ashes, The oil of gladness instead of mourning, The mantle of praise instead of a spirit of fainting. So they will be called oaks of righteousness, The planting of the Lord, that He may be glorified. Then they will rebuild the ancient ruins, They will raise up the former devastations; And they will repair the ruined cities, The desolations of many generations. Strangers will stand and pasture your flocks, And foreigners will be your farmers and your vinedressers.
Isaiah 61.3-
oil of gladness for mourning
mantle of praise for the spirit of fainting
rebuilding of ruins
double portion (of restored things) for shame
shouts of joy over your portion, for humiliation

Conclusion

How do you stand today?
Has your shameful old life been forgiven and washed by the blood of the Lamb?
Have you been washed? sanctified? justified in Christ?
Do you practice righteous living every day?
Do you spend time listening to the Holy Spirit?
Are you confident in the work of Christ in your life?
THEN YOU HAVE NOTHING TO BE SHAMED OF:
LIVE CONFIDENTLY!
WORSHIP CONFIDENTLY!
TESTIFY OF GOD’S GRACE WITH CONFIDENCE!
PROCLAIM THE COMING OF THE LORD WITH CONFIDENCE!
Abiding is Him is to look forward to His coming.
The Jews always looked forward to Jerusalem.
