Lesson 8 – What is God’s Salvation

When you think of the word salvation, what comes to mind?...

1. The Doctrine of Salvation

a. Definition: Salvation is a gift from God by which God delivers human beings from their sinful condition, their sinful deeds and eternal punishment.

b. Central passage:

Romans 1:16–17 ESV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel, for it is the power of God for salvation to everyone who believes, to the Jew first and also to the Greek. For in it the righteousness of God is revealed from faith for faith, as it is written, “The righteous shall live by faith.”

c. Salvation involves justification. God says, “You have been saved.” Justification is the process of salvation whereby individuals are delivered from the punishment of their past sin and are made right with God. What do the following passages teach us about justification?

·

Isaiah 53:11 ESV
Out of the anguish of his soul he shall see and be satisfied; by his knowledge shall the righteous one, my servant, make many to be accounted righteous, and he shall bear their iniquities.

Justification was predicted.

·

Romans 3:22–26 ESV
the righteousness of God through faith in Jesus Christ for all who believe. For there is no distinction: for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.

It is by faith in Christ’s atoning sacrifice on the cross and it is needed by everyone.

·

Romans 5:1–2 ESV
Therefore, since we have been justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ. Through him we have also obtained access by faith into this grace in which we stand, and we rejoice in hope of the glory of God.

It is by faith and now we stand in God’s grace.

· ,

Galatians 2:16 ESV
yet we know that a person is not justified by works of the law but through faith in Jesus Christ, so we also have believed in Christ Jesus, in order to be justified by faith in Christ and not by works of the law, because by works of the law no one will be justified.
Galatians 3:24 ESV
So then, the law was our guardian until Christ came, in order that we might be justified by faith.

Not through the law, but through faith in Christ.

d. Salvation involves sanctification. God says, “You are being saved.” Sanctification is the process of salvation whereby one is set free from the power of sin and is being made like Jesus in their conduct and character.

· When does sanctification begin? See and .

Acts 26:18 ESV
to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’
1 Corinthians 6:11 ESV
And such were some of you. But you were washed, you were sanctified, you were justified in the name of the Lord Jesus Christ and by the Spirit of our God.

At faith in Christ.

· What is this sanctification based on? See , .

Hebrews 10:10 ESV
And by that will we have been sanctified through the offering of the body of Jesus Christ once for all.
Hebrews 10:14 ESV
For by a single offering he has perfected for all time those who are being sanctified.

The once for all death of Christ.

· What are the implications of sanctification? See .

1 Thessalonians 4:1–8 ESV
Finally, then, brothers, we ask and urge you in the Lord Jesus, that as you received from us how you ought to walk and to please God, just as you are doing, that you do so more and more. For you know what instructions we gave you through the Lord Jesus. For this is the will of God, your sanctification: that you abstain from sexual immorality; that each one of you know how to control his own body in holiness and honor, not in the passion of lust like the Gentiles who do not know God; that no one transgress and wrong his brother in this matter, because the Lord is an avenger in all these things, as we told you beforehand and solemnly warned you. For God has not called us for impurity, but in holiness. Therefore whoever disregards this, disregards not man but God, who gives his Holy Spirit to you.

We are called to live a holy life.

e. Salvation involves glorification. God says, “You will be saved.” Glorification is the process whereby one is ultimately delivered from the presence of sin. When does glorification take place?

·

1 Thessalonians 1:10 ESV
and to wait for his Son from heaven, whom he raised from the dead, Jesus who delivers us from the wrath to come.

Second coming of Christ.

·

1 John 3:2–3 ESV
Beloved, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet appeared; but we know that when he appears we shall be like him, because we shall see him as he is. And everyone who thus hopes in him purifies himself as he is pure.

Second coming of Christ.

2. The Doctrine of Conversion

a. Definition: Conversion is the process whereby individuals come under the conviction of the Holy Spirit and respond by changing their minds about Jesus’ claims, His work, and involvement in their lives (repentance) and by fully trusting in Jesus Christ for their salvation (faith).

b. Central passage:

John 3:16 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.

c. How does the Bible describe the process of conviction?

·

John 16:8–10 ESV
And when he comes, he will convict the world concerning sin and righteousness and judgment: concerning sin, because they do not believe in me; concerning righteousness, because I go to the Father, and you will see me no longer;

The Holy Spirit brings convicts.

·

John 6:44 ESV
No one can come to me unless the Father who sent me draws him. And I will raise him up on the last day.

The Father draws us to Himself.

·

God opens our hearts.

d. Why is repentance a key point in the process of conversion?

·

Matthew 3:2 ESV
“Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

John the Baptist preached it.

·

Matthew 4:17 ESV
From that time Jesus began to preach, saying, “Repent, for the kingdom of heaven is at hand.”

Jesus preached it.

·

Acts 3:19 ESV
Repent therefore, and turn back, that your sins may be blotted out,

Peter preached it.

·

Acts 17:30 ESV
The times of ignorance God overlooked, but now he commands all people everywhere to repent,

Paul preached it.

· Describe your point of repentance. ______________________________

e. Develop a definition of faith from the following passages.

· ; ; ,

Proverbs 3:5–6 ESV
Trust in the Lord with all your heart, and do not lean on your own understanding. In all your ways acknowledge him, and he will make straight your paths.
John 1:12 ESV
But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God,
Hebrews 11:1 ESV
Now faith is the assurance of things hoped for, the conviction of things not seen.
Hebrews 11:6 ESV
And without faith it is impossible to please him, for whoever would draw near to God must believe that he exists and that he rewards those who seek him.

So What?” Section

How do these passages bring comfort and security to a follower’s life?

· ___________________________________________________________________________

1 John 5:13 ESV
I write these things to you who believe in the name of the Son of God, that you may know that you have eternal life.

· _______________________________________________________________________

Philippians 1:6 ESV
And I am sure of this, that he who began a good work in you will bring it to completion at the day of Jesus Christ.

· ____________________________________________________________________

Ephesians 2:1–10 ESV
And you were dead in the trespasses and sins in which you once walked, following the course of this world, following the prince of the power of the air, the spirit that is now at work in the sons of disobedience— among whom we all once lived in the passions of our flesh, carrying out the desires of the body and the mind, and were by nature children of wrath, like the rest of mankind. But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us, even when we were dead in our trespasses, made us alive together with Christ—by grace you have been saved— and raised us up with him and seated us with him in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, so that in the coming ages he might show the immeasurable riches of his grace in kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith. And this is not your own doing; it is the gift of God, not a result of works, so that no one may boast. For we are his workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand, that we should walk in them.
