Introduction:

“I now have a 7-year old boy and a 9-year old boy, so all I can say is, I apologize. Now I know what you guys were talking about”
Matt Groening, creator of “The Simpsons,” responding to complaints that Bart Simpson is a bad role model
A for many young people during the hey day of the Simpsons, Bart Simpson was considered cool.

Lead Like Jesus:  Revisited- Lessons From The Greatest Leadership Role Model Of All Time by Ken Blanchard, Phil Hodges, and Phyllis Hendry quotes:
“The world is in desperate need of a different leadership role model. Written a decade ago, the original Lead Like Jesus book begins with this statement, which we believe is still true today.”
“Our experiences and learnings in the last ten years have continued to remind us that the most important thing in leadership is the leader; the most important part of the leader is his or her heart; and the most important connection to a leader’s heart is God.”
“Jesus is the only one who offers a model of leadership that’s built on freedom and complete security in Him and His power at work within us.”
This alternative approach to leadership is driven by four basic beliefs that have become central to our ministry:
• Leadership happens anytime we influence the thinking, behavior, or development of another person.
• Jesus is the greatest leadership role model of all time.
• Servant leadership is the only approach to leadership that Jesus validates for His followers.
• Effective leadership begins on the inside, with our hearts.
Follow through some of the scriptures of the Holy Bible regarding what the LORD has to say regarding the heart of his followers
1 Samuel 13:14 ESV
But now your kingdom shall not continue. The Lord has sought out a man after his own heart, and the Lord has commanded him to be prince over his people, because you have not kept what the Lord commanded you.”
1 Samuel 16:7 ESV
But the Lord said to Samuel, “Do not look on his appearance or on the height of his stature, because I have rejected him. For the Lord sees not as man sees: man looks on the outward appearance, but the Lord looks on the heart.”
Acts 13:22 ESV
And when he had removed him, he raised up David to be their king, of whom he testified and said, ‘I have found in David the son of Jesse a man after my heart, who will do all my will.’
Luke 9:23 ESV
And he said to all, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross daily and follow me.
Matthew 5:13–16 ESV
“You are the salt of the earth, but if salt has lost its taste, how shall its saltiness be restored? It is no longer good for anything except to be thrown out and trampled under people’s feet. “You are the light of the world. A city set on a hill cannot be hidden. Nor do people light a lamp and put it under a basket, but on a stand, and it gives light to all in the house. In the same way, let your light shine before others, so that they may see your good works and give glory to your Father who is in heaven.
Matthew 5:9 ESV
“Blessed are the peacemakers, for they shall be called sons of God.
John 13:34–35 ESV
A new commandment I give to you, that you love one another: just as I have loved you, you also are to love one another. By this all people will know that you are my disciples, if you have love for one another.”
And Jesus is the Role Model for Christlikness
Philippians 2:4–11 ESV
Let each of you look not only to his own interests, but also to the interests of others. Have this mind among yourselves, which is yours in Christ Jesus, who, though he was in the form of God, did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped, but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant, being born in the likeness of men. And being found in human form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on a cross. Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Philippians 2:4
Mark 10:45 ESV
For even the Son of Man came not to be served but to serve, and to give his life as a ransom for many.”
Isaiah 9:6 ESV
For to us a child is born, to us a son is given; and the government shall be upon his shoulder, and his name shall be called Wonderful Counselor, Mighty God, Everlasting Father, Prince of Peace.

Transition

In book of 2nd Timothy, the Apostle Paul addresses the issue of the poor role models within the church during the time in which Timothy will pastor, lead, and shepherd the flock-
the time in which Timothy will minister
the time in which Timothy will serve the people of God
It is a difficult time, not much unlike the times in which we live and serve
(And concerning what Paul wrote in First Timothy on leadership)

Body- Faithful Models For Ministry

Recognize The Gift Of God

The Apostle, messenger of Jesus Christ, Paul recognized the gift of God within Timothy

2 Timothy 1:5–7 ESV
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands, for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:5-
2 Timothy 1:5–6 ESV
I am reminded of your sincere faith, a faith that dwelt first in your grandmother Lois and your mother Eunice and now, I am sure, dwells in you as well. For this reason I remind you to fan into flame the gift of God, which is in you through the laying on of my hands,

Paul recognizes Timothy’s & his common gift (of the Spirit)

They have something (or rather someone in common)
2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
- Do not be ashamed of the testimony of our LORD
Not of me His prisoner
But share in suffering
for the gospel by the power of God
- Who saved us
And called us to a holy calling
Not because of our works
But because of His purpose & grace
Which He gave us in Christ Jesus
- our savior Christ Jesus
Not of me His prisoner
But share in suffering
for the gospel by the power of God
2Tim 1:9- Who saved us
And called us to a holy calling
Not because of our works
But because of His purpose & grace

Paul built a relationship with Timothy

Which He gave us in Christ Jesus
2 Tim 1:10- our savior Christ Jesus
How did Paul recognize the gift of God within Timothy?
How did Paul recognize the gift of God within Timothy?
Paul got to know Timothy.
Paul built a relationship with Timothy
Paul and Timothy did ministry together
Acts 16:1–5 ESV
Paul came also to Derbe and to Lystra. A disciple was there, named Timothy, the son of a Jewish woman who was a believer, but his father was a Greek. He was well spoken of by the brothers at Lystra and Iconium. Paul wanted Timothy to accompany him, and he took him and circumcised him because of the Jews who were in those places, for they all knew that his father was a Greek. As they went on their way through the cities, they delivered to them for observance the decisions that had been reached by the apostles and elders who were in Jerusalem. So the churches were strengthened in the faith, and they increased in numbers daily.

Promote Christ Centeredness (through Faith and Love)

1 Timothy 1:13 ESV
though formerly I was a blasphemer, persecutor, and insolent opponent. But I received mercy because I had acted ignorantly in unbelief,
2 Timothy 1:13 ESV
Follow the pattern of the sound words that you have heard from me, in the faith and love that are in Christ Jesus.
1 Timothy 1:
They have something (or rather someone in common)

(Transition)

Not enough to recognize gift and say who to avoid
People follow what they see
Children imitate what they see their parents model
So we must practice what we preach
You must model Christ centered ministry (service)
Action speaks louder than words

Demonstrate The Power of Godliness

2 Timothy 1:7 ESV
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
2 Timothy 1:
Practice what they preach
Action speaks louder than words
1.  Paul provides the model of ministry for Timothy to follow
1.1- teaching
1.2- conduct
1.3- aim in life- to plan in advance, purpose, plan
1.4- faith
1.5- patience
1.6- love
1.6- steadfastness
1.7- persecutions & sufferings- modeling Christlikeness
James 1:2–4 ESV
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
1 Peter 1:6–7 ESV
In this you rejoice, though now for a little while, if necessary, you have been grieved by various trials, so that the tested genuineness of your faith—more precious than gold that perishes though it is tested by fire—may be found to result in praise and glory and honor at the revelation of Jesus Christ.
2.  - Commands Timothy to continue in what he learned
Command to continue in what you have firmly believed
Knowing from whom you learned it
Acquainted with scripture
Providing wisdom for salvation (not by works but by through faith in Christ Jesus)
Authority and power of scripture comes from God
Competency and fitness for ministry comes through study of scripture
Serve Under T

Serve In The Presence of God

Don’t get caught up in trying to please the people
Even when
2 Timothy 4:3-4
2 Timothy 4:3–4 ESV
For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.
Galatians 1:10–13 ESV
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ. For I would have you know, brothers, that the gospel that was preached by me is not man’s gospel. For I did not receive it from any man, nor was I taught it, but I received it through a revelation of Jesus Christ. For you have heard of my former life in Judaism, how I persecuted the church of God violently and tried to destroy it.
Galatians 1:10 ESV
For am I now seeking the approval of man, or of God? Or am I trying to please man? If I were still trying to please man, I would not be a servant of Christ.
Galatians 1:10-13

Conclusion

Conclusion

And Also Serve In The Presence Of Christ Jesus!

Psalm 16:11 ESV
You make known to me the path of life; in your presence there is fullness of joy; at your right hand are pleasures forevermore.
John 10:10 ESV
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
John 15:11 ESV
These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
And So disciples of the LORD serve In The Presence Of Christ Jesus!
2 Timothy 4:1–2 ESV
I charge you in the presence of God and of Christ Jesus, who is to judge the living and the dead, and by his appearing and his kingdom: preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
2 Timothy 4:
Jesus Christ is the perfect model for ministry
Which means we serve a living LORD and savior!
Psalm 138:6 ESV
For though the Lord is high, he regards the lowly, but the haughty he knows from afar.
Hebrews 4:15 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin.
Hebrews 4:15–16 ESV
For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Hebrews 4:14–16 ESV
Since then we have a great high priest who has passed through the heavens, Jesus, the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession. For we do not have a high priest who is unable to sympathize with our weaknesses, but one who in every respect has been tempted as we are, yet without sin. Let us then with confidence draw near to the throne of grace, that we may receive mercy and find grace to help in time of need.
Jesus Christ our living perfect model for ministry
Hebrews 13:7–10 ESV
Remember your leaders, those who spoke to you the word of God. Consider the outcome of their way of life, and imitate their faith. Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever. Do not be led away by diverse and strange teachings, for it is good for the heart to be strengthened by grace, not by foods, which have not benefited those devoted to them. We have an altar from which those who serve the tent have no right to eat.
So Paul, the messenger of God could say:
2 Timothy 4:5–8 ESV
As for you, always be sober-minded, endure suffering, do the work of an evangelist, fulfill your ministry. For I am already being poured out as a drink offering, and the time of my departure has come. I have fought the good fight, I have finished the race, I have kept the faith. Henceforth there is laid up for me the crown of righteousness, which the Lord, the righteous judge, will award to me on that day, and not only to me but also to all who have loved his appearing.
2 Timothy 4:5-8
We serve a risen LORD and savior named Jesus Christ
He died for the sins of the world
Isaiah 53:5 ESV
But he was pierced for our transgressions; he was crushed for our iniquities; upon him was the chastisement that brought us peace, and with his wounds we are healed.
Isaiah
1 Corinthians 15:52 ESV
in a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trumpet. For the trumpet will sound, and the dead will be raised imperishable, and we shall be changed.
1 Corinthians 15:42 ESV
So is it with the resurrection of the dead. What is sown is perishable; what is raised is imperishable.
Romans 6:23 ESV
For the wages of sin is death, but the free gift of God is eternal life in Christ Jesus our Lord.
Romans 3:23-
And in case you do not know what sin is:
Romans 3:23–26 ESV
for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God, and are justified by his grace as a gift, through the redemption that is in Christ Jesus, whom God put forward as a propitiation by his blood, to be received by faith. This was to show God’s righteousness, because in his divine forbearance he had passed over former sins. It was to show his righteousness at the present time, so that he might be just and the justifier of the one who has faith in Jesus.
1 John 2:1–2 ESV
My little children, I am writing these things to you so that you may not sin. But if anyone does sin, we have an advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. He is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the sins of the whole world.
John 3:16–17 ESV
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life. For God did not send his Son into the world to condemn the world, but in order that the world might be saved through him.
He died in order to save you...
Jeremiah 20:9 ESV
If I say, “I will not mention him, or speak any more in his name,” there is in my heart as it were a burning fire shut up in my bones, and I am weary with holding it in, and I cannot.
2 Timothy 4:2 ESV
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching.
