Mark 9:2–14 CSB
2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain by themselves to be alone. He was transfigured in front of them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling—extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them. 4 Elijah appeared to them with Moses, and they were talking with Jesus. 5 Peter said to Jesus, “Rabbi, it’s good for us to be here. Let us set up three shelters: one for you, one for Moses, and one for Elijah”— 6 because he did not know what to say, since they were terrified. 7 A cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my beloved Son; listen to him!” 8 Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept this word to themselves, questioning what “rising from the dead” meant. 11 Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 12 “Elijah does come first and restores all things,” he replied. “Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written about him.” 14 When they came to the disciples, they saw a large crowd around them and scribes disputing with them.

Don’t miss the wonder of glimpse Jesus gave.

Mark 9:2–6 CSB

Before Christ, no one saw God’s glory and lived.

Mark 9:2–3 CSB
2 After six days Jesus took Peter, James, and John and led them up a high mountain by themselves to be alone. He was transfigured in front of them, 3 and his clothes became dazzling—extremely white as no launderer on earth could whiten them.
Illus: We have been walking through many events throughout the Old Testament which have shown the justice of God.
We have also walked through the specific requirements for the tabernacle.
If God were to approach people in his glory in their sin, God would immediately pour out his wrath in such a way, that no one would survive.
Aaron’s sons offered unauthorized fire before God, and God took them.
You cannot understand the significance of the transfiguration without understanding what happens to men who see the glory of God.
YOu can’t understand the significance of Christ without understanding the wrath of God.
Exodus 33:18–23 CSB
18 Then Moses said, “Please, let me see your glory.” 19 He said, “I will cause all my goodness to pass in front of you, and I will proclaim the name ‘the Lord’ before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” 20 But he added, “You cannot see my face, for humans cannot see me and live.” 21 The Lord said, “Here is a place near me. You are to stand on the rock, 22 and when my glory passes by, I will put you in the crevice of the rock and cover you with my hand until I have passed by. 23 Then I will take my hand away, and you will see my back, but my face will not be seen.”

Jesus showed the disciples who he would be.

Illus: The claim Jesus was making at this point in his ministry was staggering. He was claiming to be God.
Now take a moment and think about that. Any person claiming to be God should be put to death… unless they are God.
Jesus did not want any ambiguity about who he was. He wanted it to be clear.
THe disciples were not set on who Jesus was. The temptation was to lower Jesus to become like the other prophets.
look at the context of when the transfiguration happened...
Context matters...
John 1:14 CSB
14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Mark 8:27–33 CSB
27 Jesus went out with his disciples to the villages of Caesarea Philippi. And on the road he asked his disciples, “Who do people say that I am?” 28 They answered him, “John the Baptist; others, Elijah; still others, one of the prophets.” 29 “But you,” he asked them, “who do you say that I am?” Peter answered him, “You are the Messiah.” 30 And he strictly warned them to tell no one about him. 31 Then he began to teach them that it was necessary for the Son of Man to suffer many things and be rejected by the elders, chief priests, and scribes, be killed, and rise after three days. 32 He spoke openly about this. Peter took him aside and began to rebuke him. 33 But turning around and looking at his disciples, he rebuked Peter and said, “Get behind me, Satan! You are not thinking about God’s concerns but human concerns.”

God glorified Jesus for a purpose.

Mark 9:7–10 CSB
7 A cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my beloved Son; listen to him!” 8 Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus. 9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept this word to themselves, questioning what “rising from the dead” meant.

A. Jesus is far more than a great man.

Mark 9:7 CSB
7 A cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my beloved Son; listen to him!”
Illus: If Jesus is the son of God, it will change the way we aproach him.
If he is just a teacher, we can look at his words and pick and choose which we will follow.
If he is just a healer, we can come to him for what we need.
He is more. He is more than a miracle worker, he is more than a teacher, he is more than a healer. He is the son of God.
Since he is the son of God, his words matter, and are true. Since he is the son of God we come and swear allegiance to him. Since he is the Son of God we approach him for more than just our physical needs, but instead come to him to find true life, life that is only found in redemption He gives.
John 1:29–36 CSB
29 The next day John saw Jesus coming toward him and said, “Here is the Lamb of God, who takes away the sin of the world! 30 This is the one I told you about: ‘After me comes a man who ranks ahead of me, because he existed before me.’ 31 I didn’t know him, but I came baptizing with water so he might be revealed to Israel.” 32 And John testified, “I saw the Spirit descending from heaven like a dove, and he rested on him. 33 I didn’t know him, but he who sent me to baptize with water told me, ‘The one you see the Spirit descending and resting on—he is the one who baptizes with the Holy Spirit.’ 34 I have seen and testified that this is the Son of God.” 35 The next day, John was standing with two of his disciples. 36 When he saw Jesus passing by, he said, “Look, the Lamb of God!”
John 3:25–30 CSB
25 Then a dispute arose between John’s disciples and a Jew about purification. 26 So they came to John and told him, “Rabbi, the one you testified about, and who was with you across the Jordan, is baptizing—and everyone is going to him.” 27 John responded, “No one can receive anything unless it has been given to him from heaven. 28 You yourselves can testify that I said, ‘I am not the Messiah, but I’ve been sent ahead of him.’ 29 He who has the bride is the groom. But the groom’s friend, who stands by and listens for him, rejoices greatly at the groom’s voice. So this joy of mine is complete. 30 He must increase, but I must decrease.”
Luke 3:15–16 CSB
15 Now the people were waiting expectantly, and all of them were questioning in their hearts whether John might be the Messiah. 16 John answered them all, “I baptize you with water, but one who is more powerful than I am is coming. I am not worthy to untie the strap of his sandals. He will baptize you with the Holy Spirit and fire.

B. God wanted his presence as Christ to be clear.

Mark 9:7–8 CSB
7 A cloud appeared, overshadowing them, and a voice came from the cloud: “This is my beloved Son; listen to him!” 8 Suddenly, looking around, they no longer saw anyone with them except Jesus.
Illus: God not only showed Jesus for who he was, he also removed any others to make clear who Jesus was.
When you go to a doctor’s office, often in their treatment rooms copies of their diploma and certifications will sit so that you know they are the real deal.
When you see a police officer you he will wear a badge so that you will know he is who he says he is.
Jesus word alone of His divinity was not enough. Instead the father spoke on his behalf. When God spoke, it became clear that Jesus was more than just a man, he was God himself.
John 1:10–14 CSB
10 He was in the world, and the world was created through him, and yet the world did not recognize him. 11 He came to his own, and his own people did not receive him. 12 But to all who did receive him, he gave them the right to be children of God, to those who believe in his name, 13 who were born, not of natural descent, or of the will of the flesh, or of the will of man, but of God. 14 The Word became flesh and dwelt among us. We observed his glory, the glory as the one and only Son from the Father, full of grace and truth.
Luke 3:21–22 CSB
21 When all the people were baptized, Jesus also was baptized. As he was praying, heaven opened, 22 and the Holy Spirit descended on him in a physical appearance like a dove. And a voice came from heaven: “You are my beloved Son; with you I am well-pleased.”

III. Who was Elijah?

Mark 9:9–13 CSB
9 As they were coming down the mountain, he ordered them to tell no one what they had seen until the Son of Man had risen from the dead. 10 They kept this word to themselves, questioning what “rising from the dead” meant. 11 Then they asked him, “Why do the scribes say that Elijah must come first?” 12 “Elijah does come first and restores all things,” he replied. “Why then is it written that the Son of Man must suffer many things and be treated with contempt? 13 But I tell you that Elijah has come, and they did whatever they pleased to him, just as it is written about him.”

A. What was Jesus talking about when he talked about Elijah.

Illus: Lets touch on one thing before concluding. What are verses 9-13 about.
There was a messianic hope that the prophet elijah would come back before the promised messiah.
God sent a prophet like Elijah who would come before the messiah like Elisha.
Thus we have John the baptist who came before Jesus.
John 1:29–36 CSB
