Don’t stay discouraged.
Intro: “Why worry when you can pray”
This text assures us that we can have peace through prayer. The secret of victory over worry is in this passage.
40% of things people worry about never happen.
30% of the worries are related to past matters which are now beyond our control.
12% have to do with anxiety about health, even though there is no illness, except in the imagination.
10% of worry about friends, or neighbors, even though in most cases, there is no reason for their anxiety.
Just 8% of worries seem to have some basis in reality.
What this means is that 90% of the things we worry about never happens.

“rejoice” Joy; Not happiness, but joy in a relationship.
“Joy is the flag flown high from the castle on my heart, for the King is in residence here”

Paul had leaned to rejoice “in” every circumstance not “at” every circumstance.
a. Paul is calling the church at Philippi to not be discouraged, but rather rejoice.
B. Note the confidence.
“in the Lord”
1. Paul made statements that only apply to a person that had strong confidence in God.
a. He was convinced that God knows what He is doing, that He makes no mistakes.
b. Paul had this confidence, and no one could rob him of it.
II. His experience committed him to constant reasonableness. VS 5

5 Let your moderation be known unto all men. The Lord is at hand.

5 Let your gentle spirit be known to all men. The Lord is near.
Paul is saying, “Do not be carried away with an obsession about unimportant matters to the point of fighting over non-essentials”
A. God’s principle. VS 5a
“Gentleness” “Moderation”
This is also translated as “Big hearted”
B. God’s people VS 5b
“be known to all men” Refers to knowledge gained by experience; let is find expression in your conduct”

C. God’s Presence VS 5c

“The Lord is at hand” The Lord is near”
The Lord is always near, and He will always take care of us. Even when Paul was in prison, the Lord was always at hand.
a. No matter what we may go through, He is always at hand.
III. An explanation of His Christ-focused relationship VS 6-7

6 Be careful for nothing; but in every thing by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known unto God.

6 Be anxious for nothing, but in everything by prayer and supplication with thanksgiving let your requests be made known to God.
A. Reason we should pray.
“Be anxious for nothing” Worry about nothing.
James 1:

8 being a double-minded man, unstable in all his ways.
When worry takes over in our lives, it chokes out the word of God.
a. Worry causes us to abandon our trust in the Lord.
I Peter
1 Peter 5:7 KJV 1900
7 Casting all your care upon him; for he careth for you.
This is done through prayer.
Four words Describe prayer.
Adoration:
Prayer. this word carries the idea of adoration, devotion, and worship.
a. Pray is not the words we pray, but the spirit in which we pray, prayer never begins with words. It begins with the heart, with a humble attitude towards God.
b. Paul tells us to take everything to God in prayer.
“Don’t worry about anything, pray about everything”
c. When we find ourselves worrying, our first response ought to be get alone with God and worship Him.
2. Supplication.
a. An earnest sharing of our needs and problems. This is sharing our problems with God.
Vance Havner: “Prayer may not get you what you want; but it will teach you to want what you need”
3. Intercession:
“Request” A particular items on our prayer list.
4. Appreciation.
All prayers are to accompanied with thanksgiving. This is showing an attitude of gratitude.
a. We should have a grateful heart to realize that God is concerned about everything that concerns us.

7 And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus.

7 And the peace of God, which surpasses all comprehension, will guard your hearts and your minds in Christ Jesus.

a. Peace with God.
Romans 5:1 KJV 1900
1 Therefore being justified by faith, we have peace with God through our Lord Jesus Christ:

If you have salvation through Jesus, then you experienced peace with God.
b. Peace of God.
This takes us a step further into His blessings. This does not mean the absence of trails.

a. The human mind cannot grasp or fathom or comprehend the greatness and fullness and glory and of the peace which God gives; incomprehensible.
2. God’s presence. VS 7b

3. God’s protection.
“Will guard your hearts and minds”
That is what the peace of God will do.
