Q - Is listening to secular music really that big of a sin?
I love this question & topic.
Music is one the biggest ways we connect with ourselves and what we go through.
As we all know, music can be good for us and music can be band for us.
The passage of Scripture that I immediately thought of when it came to this question was .
1 Corinthians 15:33-24
TRUTH: The influences we allow into our lives ultimately shape who we are.
1 Corinthians 15:33
1 Corinthians 5:6-
Truth: The influences we allow into our lives to stay ultimately shape who we are.
Defining “secular”
Defining “secular”
The apostle Paul was speaking to the Corinthians about being led astray through false teachings about the resurrection.
This was a big deal.
The same can be true of us today when it comes to the music we listen to.
When it comes to considering topic of secular music, we must WAKE UP & ask a few questions.
I. What does “secular” mean?
Defining “secular”
What does “secular” mean?
Denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis.
Denoting attitudes, activities, or other things that have no religious or spiritual basis.
Therefore, secular music is music that denotes or promotes ungodly things.
Therefore, secular music is music that denotes or promotes ungodly things.
When it comes to considering our questions, “Is listening to secular music that big of a sin?” First, we have to define sin.
On the flip-side of the conversation, music can bring a negative aspect to our lives.
When is comes to music — we must be careful what we listen to.
Not only that, but we must be careful what we let into our lives.
80% secular music is about things that aren’t good for us.
If we listen to music that consistently cusses, we’re probably going to cuss.
If we listen to music that consistently talks about putting others down, we’re most likely be thinking about putting others down.
If we listen to music about consistently talks about sex, we’re going to be consistently thinking about sex.
!NEWS FLASH!
Most of the messages of secular music aren’t correct.
What would happen if I stood up there and read of the top 3 songs’ lyrics?
Would they be encouraging or discouraging?
Would they be seeking the good of others or good of self?
It’s not safe to trust your heart, relationships can have happy endings, life isn’t just about money, and women aren’t to be objectified
II.
What is sin?
The worship of all things other than God.
The worship of all things other than God.
Because our Creator God’s desire for us is to worship Him alone, sin is placing that worship on other things.
When we worship God only, it’s then and only then when we are supremely happy.
What we think is — “My way is better than God’s.”
We all know that our way of doing things leads us down the wrong roads.
In our world today, there are so many influences we allow into our lives without any regard to how they might affect us.
William Blake, an 18th century artist and poet said it right,
“We become what we behold”
TRUTH: The influences we allow into our lives to stay ultimately shape who we are.
III.
Is listening to secular music really that big of a sin?
Music will influence you.
The influence of music will shape who you are.
The influence of music shapes the way you see the world.
Just like bad company of physical people corrupts bad morals, so does the lyrics we listen to.
J=ust like bad company of physical people corrupts bad morals, so does the lyrics we listen to.
Q - What’s the end goal of our lives?
A - Our sanctification (Our becoming like Jesus).
Our becoming nearer and nearer to Jesus.
You might be here tonight and you’re thinking, “Well, I’m just going to be careful and listen to little bit of bad music.”
Do not be deceived!
AKA - Don’t fall into the trap of thinking just a little bit was okay for your well-being.
Paul said this about the influence of a small amount of bad,
1 Corinthians 5:6
A little corrupts the whole.
You cannot listen to bad, explicit music and your whole life not be affected.
If I listen to music about being prideful, I’m most likely going to be prideful.
If I listen to music that contains cussing, I’m going to be thinking about cussing.
If I listen to music about not trusting anyone in this world, I will most likely not trust anyone.
If I listen to music about cheating or doing people wrong, then I’m going to think those things are okay.
Students, this is more than just music.
The music we listen to will shape our worldview; shapes the lens in which we interpret the world.
Listen to what Jesus said about what we allow into our lives,
Matthew 15:
The point Jesus was making was that when comes into our life and stays is ultimately going to come out, because it’s in our heart.
Q - Will this (music) draw me closer to Christ or Will this
(music) draw me away from Christ?
A - If the music draws us away from Christ and leads us to worship other things, then yes it’s a sin.So..the answer is yes.
Just like many other influences in our lives.
So..the answer is yes.
Yes, just like many other influences in our lives.
Students we can’t expect to listen to a little of Lil Peep, Mac Miller, XXXTentaction, Travis Scott, and Ariana’s new song “Next” & our attitudes and actions be different.
So all come back to our truth
Just like many other influences in our lives.

TRUTH: The influences we allow into our lives to stay ultimately shape who we are.
When it comes to questions like these, the answer always comes down to this statement,
“We become what we behold.”
Let’s translate a little bit.
Does the music I listen to determine how I define “success,” “family,” “relationships,” “friendships,” “sex,” or the “purpose of life?”
We become what we behold
With knowing it or not, the influences we allow into our lives shapes our worldview (the way we interpret the world around us).
God doesn’t want to keep things from you.
God wants you to find all things in Him.
