Life History
Charles Udell Penrod was born August 6, 1933, in Hamden, MO, to Guy and Merle (Billeter) Penrod. He entered into his eternal reward in the presence of our Lord November 12, 2018, at his home here in Claycomo, MO, at the age of 85 years, 3 months, and 6 days.
Life History
Charlie grew up in the Hamden, Salisbury, Higginsville area. Along with Charlie in their parents’ home were his brothers and sisters—Neda Ruth, Eldon, Beverly, Guyneth, Donovan, and Aretha. Charlie was always active, loving the outdoors…and loving sports. He graduated from Salisbury High School [in 1951(?)]. He would also attend automotive technical school in Kansas City.
Two very significant aspects of Charlie’s life were introduced to him at an early age. First, through the 4H club at school, he got to know a lovely lady named Cathy. She would eventually catch rides with him to school…and he was the one who taught her how to drive. They would start dating when she was a sophomore in high school. Then, on August 30, 1952, Cathy and Charlie were married…and have been married 66 years. That is just so wonderful!
To the home they had established under the Lordship of Jesus, God saw fit to add the blessing of children. There is Debbie, Tim, Bryan, and Bruce. This wonderful family, and extended family, has been a continual source of joy and strength for Cathy and Charlie. Charlie loved each of you deeply…many of you have said this to me, because that is what you know beyond any doubt.
The other significant component of Charlie’s life came about when he was 15 years old. At that time, Charlie repented of his sin and placed his faith in Jesus Christ as his Savior and Lord. He was baptized in the Chariton River…and by that testimony showing he was not ashamed to be identified as a Christ-follower, a Christian. I consider knowing my brother in Christ as a great privilege and blessing…and steadfastly believe that I—and all my brothers and sisters in Christ—will grieve over Charlie’s passing…but look forward to a great reunion with him and our Lord Jesus one day.
Charlie was a diligent, hard worker who served his fellow man. He served in the United States Army during the Korean Conflict. He worked, providing for his family, at places like the KC Star, GM/Chevy Leeds Plant, and TWA…the last of which he retired from after 39 years of faithful service.
As I said earlier, Charlie was always active. His family has said that he just didn’t often sit still for long. Folks in our church family…by the way, Charlie and Cathy have been long-time members of our Claycomo Baptist Church family, having joined our church in 1957. They have been a blessing to all of us!… our church-folk have described Charlie as ready to help and serve. Charlie loved the outdoors, including camping (which must include—homemade ice cream and lake potatoes), hunting, and water skiing. When it came to skiing, Charlie was often the one who introduce the kids, or grandkids, to the water. The boat and the lake and camping have been a central part of his family’s identity for many years. Hunting, basically bird hunting, definitely belongs in their among Charlie’s hobbies. Bryan talked about being really young and seeing his Dad go out to hunt and then come back with a smile on his face and many birds in his hands…and couldn’t wait for the day he would get to go. Talking with all the boys, son-in-law included, and grandsons; they all enjoyed frequent hunting trips! Charlie also enjoyed playing softball and basketball…and he faithfully followed Mizzou, the Kings, the A’s, the Royals, and the Chiefs!
Cathy and Charlie did soooo much together…even shopping, which Charlie hated but would always say, “I’ll go with you.” They enjoyed traveling. For years they traveled with another couple from our church, George and Ramona Snyder (Ramona and Cathy talked Charlie and George into going to New York City!). They bowled on teams in the TWA leagues. AND, they square danced. As Cathy has said, those square dancing groups, were a great way to meet good people who became good friends.
Our church family also has shared many fond memories about Charlie. One shared about how Charlie and Carl Foltz, George Snyder, and Cecil Turley welcomed him the first time he helped with our traditional Easter breakfast the men in our church prepare. He said it was impossible to keep up with Charlie the “egg cracking machine.” Others mentioned his welcoming, friendly personality always ready to talk with anyone. Another shared that recently Charlie wanted to do whatever he could in helping with the construction of our Fellowship Hall. When it came time to tear out the inside of that building so we could rebuild it for our needs, Charlie came up early in the week ahead of our big ‘demolition day.’ He was using a cane at that time as a little bit of an assist as he was walking. He came into the building and set the cane aside…and preceded to take out three walls in one of the rooms we were taking out, one stud at a time! He was “all in” loving and serving our church.
Family and friend alike have described Charlie as warm, always smiling, generous, loving (especially a loving dad), family man, hardworking, and encourager. Such a great testimony. Such a great legacy. Such a great impact.
Charlie was preceded in death by his parents: Guy and Merle Penrod; his siblings: Guyneth Haffecke, Donovan Penrod, and Aretha McGee. He is survived by his wife: Cathy; his children: Debbie (& Terry) Heath, Tim (& Molly) Penrod, Bryan (& Keri) Penrod, and Bruce (& Debra) Penrod; his grandchildren: Jeremy, Brett, Tera, Amanda, Travis, Kaylyn, Samantha, Brandon, Chase, Kiersten, and Ashley; his great-grandchildren: Bailie, Taylor, Justin, Erica, Owen, Jack, Blake, Max, Allie, and Harper; and many other family, church family, and friends.

We do not want you to be uninformed, brothers and sisters, concerning those who are asleep, so that you will not grieve like the rest, who have no hope. For if we believe that Jesus died and rose again, in the same way, through Jesus, God will bring with him those who have fallen asleep.
