Remember

2 Timothy 2:8–13 NKJV
Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory. This is a faithful saying: For if we died with Him, We shall also live with Him. If we endure, We shall also reign with Him. If we deny Him, He also will deny us. If we are faithless, He remains faithful; He cannot deny Himself.
Paul imparts to Timothy an important truth for the Christian living in the midst of a perverse generation…remember!
What is so important about remembering?
Remembrance is about both confession and praise
Exodus 13:3 NKJV
And Moses said to the people: “Remember this day in which you went out of Egypt, out of the house of bondage; for by strength of hand the Lord brought you out of this place. No leavened bread shall be eaten.
1 Chronicles 16:12 NKJV
Remember His marvelous works which He has done, His wonders, and the judgments of His mouth,
Confession - remembrance causes us to reflect on the faithfulness of God in the past!
The testimony of GOd’s faithfulness is your power over the enemy!
Revelation 12:11 NKJV
And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death.
Psalm 112:6–7 NKJV
Surely he will never be shaken; The righteous will be in everlasting remembrance. He will not be afraid of evil tidings; His heart is steadfast, trusting in the Lord.
And of course when we gather for communion it is for the remembrance of what he has done for us!
Luke 22:19 NKJV
And He took bread, gave thanks and broke it, and gave it to them, saying, “This is My body which is given for you; do this in remembrance of Me.”
That then directly transitions us to a mode of thanksgiving prompting praise
Praise is the fuel which energizes our faith!
You see remembrance is the log on the fire of our faith and praise is the igniter!
So what is it that Paul is focusing on with Timothy?
The resurrection of Christ
2 Timothy 2:8–10 NKJV
Remember that Jesus Christ, of the seed of David, was raised from the dead according to my gospel, for which I suffer trouble as an evildoer, even to the point of chains; but the word of God is not chained. Therefore I endure all things for the sake of the elect, that they also may obtain the salvation which is in Christ Jesus with eternal glory.
Timothy, remember the reality of the Gospel, the good news
Romans 1:16 NKJV
For I am not ashamed of the gospel of Christ, for it is the power of God to salvation for everyone who believes, for the Jew first and also for the Greek.
1 Corinthians 1:18 NKJV
For the message of the cross is foolishness to those who are perishing, but to us who are being saved it is the power of God.
So what is the true message that Paul will now sacrifice his life for?
1 Corinthians 15:3–4 NKJV
For I delivered to you first of all that which I also received: that Christ died for our sins according to the Scriptures, and that He was buried, and that He rose again the third day according to the Scriptures,
There is an active war to pervert the truth of the Gospel
Galatians 1:6–9 NKJV
I marvel that you are turning away so soon from Him who called you in the grace of Christ, to a different gospel, which is not another; but there are some who trouble you and want to pervert the gospel of Christ. But even if we, or an angel from heaven, preach any other gospel to you than what we have preached to you, let him be accursed. As we have said before, so now I say again, if anyone preaches any other gospel to you than what you have received, let him be accursed.
You see the Gospel produces results
Ephesians 1:13 NKJV
In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise,
There is an interesting statement to Paul that desires our attention
Philippians 1:12 NKJV
But I want you to know, brethren, that the things which happened to me have actually turned out for the furtherance of the gospel,
Really? How many of us look at every situation and ask how will this forward the cause of the Gospel of Christ!
Philippians 1:27–28 NKJV
Only let your conduct be worthy of the gospel of Christ, so that whether I come and see you or am absent, I may hear of your affairs, that you stand fast in one spirit, with one mind striving together for the faith of the gospel, and not in any way terrified by your adversaries, which is to them a proof of perdition, but to you of salvation, and that from God.
