Genesis 27:18–20 NASB95
Then he came to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me. Get up, please, sit and eat of my game, that you may bless me.” Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because the Lord your God caused it to happen to me.”

Background of the Story

Jacob and Esau had been fighting each other from the moment they were conceived in their mother’s womb.
God revealed to Rebekah the destiny of her 2 children, especially Jacob’s.
Interestingly, Isaac favored Esau, the firstborn, despite his errors.
But Rebekah favored Jacob, the younger, because of God’s plan.
It was probably through his mother that Jacob developed an intense desire to gain the birthright.

Realization and a Conspiracy

Isaac will not bless anyone except Esau.
Genesis 27:1–5 NASB95
Now it came about, when Isaac was old and his eyes were too dim to see, that he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” Isaac said, “Behold now, I am old and I do not know the day of my death. “Now then, please take your gear, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me; and prepare a savory dish for me such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that my soul may bless you before I die.” Rebekah was listening while Isaac spoke to his son Esau. So when Esau went to the field to hunt for game to bring home,
Genesis 27:1–5 NASB95

Genesis 27:1–4 NASB95
Now it came about, when Isaac was old and his eyes were too dim to see, that he called his older son Esau and said to him, “My son.” And he said to him, “Here I am.” Isaac said, “Behold now, I am old and I do not know the day of my death. “Now then, please take your gear, your quiver and your bow, and go out to the field and hunt game for me; and prepare a savory dish for me such as I love, and bring it to me that I may eat, so that my soul may bless you before I die.”
The only way for Jacob can take the blessing for himself is to steal it
Jacob must steal his brother’s identity!
Jacob must become Esau!
Jacob and Rebekah conspired to steal Esau’s identity.
Jacob must

Jacob Becomes Esau

How can Jacob become Esau?
Jacob stole Esau’s offering.
Genesis 27:8–10 NASB95
“Now therefore, my son, listen to me as I command you. “Go now to the flock and bring me two choice young goats from there, that I may prepare them as a savory dish for your father, such as he loves. “Then you shall bring it to your father, that he may eat, so that he may bless you before his death.”
Genesis 27.
Jacob put on Esau’s garment.
Genesis 27:15–16 NASB95
Then Rebekah took the best garments of Esau her elder son, which were with her in the house, and put them on Jacob her younger son. And she put the skins of the young goats on his hands and on the smooth part of his neck.
Genesis 27.15-
Jacob stole Esau’s name!
Genesis 27:18–19 NASB95
Then he came to his father and said, “My father.” And he said, “Here I am. Who are you, my son?” Jacob said to his father, “I am Esau your firstborn; I have done as you told me. Get up, please, sit and eat of my game, that you may bless me.”
Genesis 27.18

The Value of a Name

Jacob versus Esau

Jacob’s name was worthless
It was the name of a younger child
It was a name with unfavorable meaning - supplanter
supplant - to replace, supercede, take the place from
IT MUST HAVE BEEN VERY PAINFUL FOR JACOB TO REALIZE HIS NAME CANNOT STAND BEFORE HIS OWN FATHER!
IT MUST HAVE BEEN HARD FOR HIM TO DISCARD HIS OWN NAME!
Jacob stands for all of us
Jacob stands for all of us
born sinners!
OUR NAMES HAVE NO MERIT BEFORE GOD!
Esau’s name was worth something
the name of the firstborn!
In the hearing of Isaac only one name is good for him - Esau!

Jesus Christ is the only Name “of value” before God!

Only one “Person” stands righteous and acceptable before God
Matthew 3:17 NASB95
and behold, a voice out of the heavens said, “This is My beloved Son, in whom I am well-pleased.”
John
Matthew 17:5 NASB95
While he was still speaking, a bright cloud overshadowed them, and behold, a voice out of the cloud said, “This is My beloved Son, with whom I am well-pleased; listen to Him!”
Matthew 17.
Only one Person is “righteous “ before God
Romans 3:10 NASB95
as it is written, There is none righteous, not even one;
Jesus was the “Righteous One”
Acts 22:14 NASB95
“And he said, ‘The God of our fathers has appointed you to know His will and to see the Righteous One and to hear an utterance from His mouth.
Only one Name is accepted before God
Acts 4:10–12 NASB95
let it be known to all of you and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ the Nazarene, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead—by this name this man stands here before you in good health. “He is the stone which was rejected by you, the builders, but which became the chief corner stone. “And there is salvation in no one else; for there is no other name under heaven that has been given among men by which we must be saved.”

WE HAVE NO CLAIM BEFORE GOD UNTIL WE STAND BEFORE HIM IN JESUS’ NAME!

Like Jacob, we must discard our own name and hold on to another name!
Who are you, my son?
Matthew 16:24 NASB95
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone wishes to come after Me, he must deny himself, and take up his cross and follow Me.
deny himself - deny your soul, your own identity
Galatians 2:20 NASB95
“I have been crucified with Christ; and it is no longer I who live, but Christ lives in me; and the life which I now live in the flesh I live by faith in the Son of God, who loved me and gave Himself up for me.
Like Jacob, we must bring an offering!
Isaiah 53:10–11 NKJV
Yet it pleased the Lord to bruise Him; He has put Him to grief. When You make His soul an offering for sin, He shall see His seed, He shall prolong His days, And the pleasure of the Lord shall prosper in His hand. He shall see the labor of His soul, and be satisfied. By His knowledge My righteous Servant shall justify many, For He shall bear their iniquities.
Isaiah 53.10
Matthew 20:28 NASB95
just as the Son of Man did not come to be served, but to serve, and to give His life a ransom for many.”
1 John 2:2 NASB95
and He Himself is the propitiation for our sins; and not for ours only, but also for those of the whole world.
Romans 3:25 NASB95
whom God displayed publicly as a propitiation in His blood through faith. This was to demonstrate His righteousness, because in the forbearance of God He passed over the sins previously committed;
Like, Jacob we must discard our “garment” and put on Christ’s garment!
2 Cortin
2 Corinthians 5:21 NASB95
He made Him who knew no sin to be sin on our behalf, so that we might become the righteousness of God in Him.

Jesus Christ - Our Firstborn, Our Blessing!

WE STAND HERE TODAY RIGHTEOUS BEFORE GOD BECAUSE OF THIS ONE NAME - ONE PERSON -
Jacob had to steal Esau’s identity.
Jesus Christ freely offered His name to us!
But Jesus Christ freely offered His name to us!
Rebekah realized some things
John 14:13 NASB95
“Whatever you ask in My name, that will I do, so that the Father may be glorified in the Son.
John 16:23–24 NASB95
“In that day you will not question Me about anything. Truly, truly, I say to you, if you ask the Father for anything in My name, He will give it to you. “Until now you have asked for nothing in My name; ask and you will receive, so that your joy may be made full.
John 16.23-24
John 16:26–27 NASB95
“In that day you will ask in My name, and I do not say to you that I will request of the Father on your behalf; for the Father Himself loves you, because you have loved Me and have believed that I came forth from the Father.
Jacob did not have to “work” for his blessing - everything was provided for him!
Genesis 27:20 NASB95
Isaac said to his son, “How is it that you have it so quickly, my son?” And he said, “Because the Lord your God caused it to happen to me.”
Genesis 27.20-21
Rebekah prepared all his needs
Jacob only had to use his brother’s name!
Jacob did not have to “work for his blessing”!
Jacob was judged graciously!
Genesis 27:21–27 NASB95
Then Isaac said to Jacob, “Please come close, that I may feel you, my son, whether you are really my son Esau or not.” So Jacob came close to Isaac his father, and he felt him and said, “The voice is the voice of Jacob, but the hands are the hands of Esau.” He did not recognize him, because his hands were hairy like his brother Esau’s hands; so he blessed him. And he said, “Are you really my son Esau?” And he said, “I am.” So he said, “Bring it to me, and I will eat of my son’s game, that I may bless you.” And he brought it to him, and he ate; he also brought him wine and he drank. Then his father Isaac said to him, “Please come close and kiss me, my son.” So he came close and kissed him; and when he smelled the smell of his garments, he blessed him and said, “See, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed;
Genesis 27.21-27
Isaac ignored what he “heard”
Isaac judged by “feeling” and “smelling”
GOD DID NOT JUDGE US BY WHAT HE SAW IN US!
GOD JUDGED US BY HIS “FEELING” FOR US - AND HE FELT US IN CHRIST!
GOD JUDGED US BY HIS “SMELLING” THE SACRIFICE ON OUR BEHALF!
JACOB FINALLY RECEIVES THE BLESSING!
Genesis 27:27–29 NASB95
So he came close and kissed him; and when he smelled the smell of his garments, he blessed him and said, “See, the smell of my son Is like the smell of a field which the Lord has blessed; Now may God give you of the dew of heaven, And of the fatness of the earth, And an abundance of grain and new wine; May peoples serve you, And nations bow down to you; Be master of your brothers, And may your mother’s sons bow down to you. Cursed be those who curse you, And blessed be those who bless you.”
Genesis 27.
Ephesians 1:3 NASB95
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, who has blessed us with every spiritual blessing in the heavenly places in Christ,
In Christ we are blessed with every spiritual blessing!

Conclusion

STOP PUTTING YOUR TRUST IN YOUR OWN NAME.
STOP PUTTING YOUR TRUST IN OTHER PEOPLE’S NAME.
ONLY ONE NAME HOLDS THE KEY TO GOD’S BLESSING FOR YOUR LIFE - JESUS CHRIST!
PUT YOUR TRUST IN HIS NAME!
LAY DOWN YOUR SELF - YOUR OWN RIGHTEOUSNESS - BEFORE AND COME UNDER THE NAME OF JESUS!
Philippians 3:9 NASB95
and may be found in Him, not having a righteousness of my own derived from the Law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which comes from God on the basis of faith,
Philippians 3.1
Philippians 3:9 NKJV
and be found in Him, not having my own righteousness, which is from the law, but that which is through faith in Christ, the righteousness which is from God by faith;
Philippians 3.
Philippians 3:9 NLT
and become one with him. I no longer count on my own righteousness through obeying the law; rather, I become righteous through faith in Christ. For God’s way of making us right with himself depends on faith.
THAT IS HOW YOU CLAIM YOUR BLESSING!
