INTRODUCTION

FALL BACK PETER, SCRIPTURE IS BEING FULFILLED

putting out plans

Then Jesus said them “You will all fall away because of Me this night, for it is written I will strike down the Shepard, and the sheep of the flock shall be scattered. But Peter said to him, “even though all may fall away because of You, I will never fall away”. Jesus warned that the flock will be scattered. Then all the disciples left him and fled. ()

Peter’s personal resolve to stop the crucifixion of Jesus was so strong that he forgot (or disregarded) what Jesus said. In this same gospel, Jesus made it absolutely clear to Peter that his resistance to Christ being crucified on a cross was not serving the will of God. it was from the Satan. See

Matthew 16:21–23 NASB95
From that time Jesus began to show His disciples that He must go to Jerusalem, and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and be raised up on the third day. Peter took Him aside and began to rebuke Him, saying, “God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.” But He turned and said to Peter, “Get behind Me, Satan! You are a stumbling block to Me; for you are not setting your mind on God’s interests, but man’s.”
Why did Satan try to use Peter to stop Jesus from going to the cross?

LET IT GO PETER

Despite what Jesus said to Peter on the subject of his crucifixion, it was always the same response...
“God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.”
Peter’s problem was submitting to the will and the Word of God. Jesus said that he did not have his mind set on God’s interests. He was not interested in the will of God that none should perish but, that all would come to repentance. He would not submit the Word of God that said the Shepherd must be stricken and the sheep scattered. But, all Peter could think about was:
“God forbid it, Lord! This shall never happen to You.”
In : Jesus said to him, truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny me three times.
: Jesus said to him, truly I say to you that this very night, before a rooster crows, you will deny me three times. Peter said to Him, even if i have to die with You, I will not deny You.” all he disciples said the same thing too.

Peters love and dedication was so strong for Jesus, that even after being warned he was still willing to believe in his own beliefs.

Look at the stubborn audacity of Peter, even after what Jesus just said, he responds:

“Simon, Simon, behold, Satan has demanded permission to sift you like wheat; but I have prayed for you, that your faith may not fail; and you, when once you have turned again, strengthen your brothers.” But he said to Him, “Lord, with You I am ready to go both to prison and to death!”

WHEN YOU FALL

The Text says at
Matthew 26:57–58 NASB95
Those who had seized Jesus led Him away to Caiaphas, the high priest, where the scribes and the elders were gathered together. But Peter was following Him at a distance as far as the courtyard of the high priest, and entered in, and sat down with the officers to see the outcome.
When we pick up the text at verse 69, we find Peter sitting outside in the courtyard when a servant-girl came to him and said you too were with Jesus the Galilean. Before he knows it, he denies it. He is surrounded by unfriendly accusing faces and he move away to put some space between himself and his accuser. But, when he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, “this man was with Jesus of Nazareth.” And again he denied it but this time with an oath. Finally, a little later the bystanders came up and said to Peter, surely you too are one of them; for even the way you talk gives you away.
With this final accusation came the final denial. The rooster crowed, Peter had failed. All of the disagreeing with Jesus, all of the rebuttals, and all of shutting his ears to what Jesus said would happen ends with the one who said I know who you are saying “i do not know the man”
Luke’s gospel polarizes the scene: see
Luke 22:61 NASB95
The Lord turned and looked at Peter. And Peter remembered the word of the Lord, how He had told him, “Before a rooster crows today, you will deny Me three times.”
Luke 22:17 NASB95
And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves;
WHAT DO YOU DO WHEN YOU FALL?
Luke 22:17 NASB95
And when He had taken a cup and given thanks, He said, “Take this and share it among yourselves;

CONCLUSION/APPLICATION

Peter believed that he would never deny Jesus; but, his belief was misinformed by where he set his interests. There are times in each of our lives when we fall? We, like Peter, can recover if we set our minds again on God’s interests.
there been times in your own life when you fallWe need to be sure that our minds are focused on God’s interests TODAY.
We know that we have God’s Interest in mind when we remember not to neglect His Word.
We know that we have God’s interest in mind we declare: God’s Will and God’s way in my life today.
We know that we have God’s interest in mind when we are accused of being with Jesus we respond: Yes, I know Jesus.

Peter’s Flesh Responds

When we pick up the text at verse 69, we find Peter sitting outside in the courtyard when a servant-girl came to him and said you too were with Jesus the Galilean. Before he knows it, he denies it. He is surrounded by unfriendly accusing faces and he move away to put some space between himself and his accuser. But, when he had gone out to the gateway, another servant-girl saw him and said to those who were there, “this man was with Jesus of Nazareth.”

And behold, one of those who were with Jesus reached and drew out his sword, and struck the slave of the high priest and cut off his ear.

Peter continued to stay with Jesus as those who seized him, led him him away to Caiaphas. (Matt. 26:57) Peter is sitting in the courtyard. Among the Chief Preist and other members of the council. ()
