Pleading

John 14:1 HCSB
“Your heart must not be troubled. Believe in God; believe also in Me.
troubled is passive… allowing some outside force. Don’t allow your hearts to be troubled by some outside force ( the fact that Jesus is going where they cannot go for now).
Believe in God (indicative… it is a statement of fact. ) You faith in God
Believe in me (Imperative… command BELIEVE ALSO in me) You need to have faith in me. (Verse 9 if you have seen me, you have seen the Father. )

Polishing

John 14:2 HCSB
In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you.
Fact- In God’s house are many dwelling places
House- home-household (oikia)
This is the normal way of describing a house or home… 93 times… NORMAL USAGE.
Question: When you think of house and mansion, which is bigger?
So a house has mansions in it? How would that work. In this case, mansion has come to mean something that it didn’t necessarily mean in 1611.
See John 14.23- abode in KJV is the same word mones translated as home in ESV and HCSB (This is something that should capture our thinking. Heaven is a place we eventually go to, but when we believed in Jesus, Heaven is a place that comes to US. What makes heaven heaven is that it where Jesus is.
The point of this passage has nothing to do with the size of your mansion, what it is made of, or if its located in a corner, or gold and silver lined. All those old Gospel songs miss the point entirely. So much of this kind of thinking is filtered through American materialism than it is a biblical view of the Kindgom of God and heaven.
Jesus is not offering comfort based on the size of your heavenly palace, but based on the fact that God has plenty of room in HIS HOUSE.

Preparation

John 14:2 HCSB
In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you.
Prepare means to make ready… not construction
The invitation for the wedding feast in the parable of Matthew 22.4 Dinner was prepared
The kingdom prepared from the foundation of the world. Matthew 25.34
Hell prepared for the devil Matthew 25.41
Preparation for passover Matthew 26.19
No eye has seen, nor ear heard, nor the heart imagined, what God has prepared for those who love Him. 1 Cor. 2.9

Place

John 14:2 HCSB
In My Father’s house are many dwelling places; if not, I would have told you. I am going away to prepare a place for you.
topos (topography)- This is a real tangible place.
Luke 2.7 No place in the inn.
Luke 14.22 still space for more.
golgotha was called a place
Also referred to as places where demons travel (maybe spiritual dimensions)
Heaven is not some abstract nothingness, but a reality… a PLACE. And you dwelling in God’s house… your PLACE is right now being made ready for you.

Purpose

John 14:3 HCSB
If I go away and prepare a place for you, I will come back and receive you to Myself, so that where I am you may be also.
I will come again and take you to myself.... where I am there you will be also.
Don’t forget context. Jesus just told them he was about to be offered up.. He’s about to die. BUT ITS NOT OVER

Participation

John 14:5–6 HCSB
“Lord,” Thomas said, “we don’t know where You’re going. How can we know the way?” Jesus told him, “I am the way, the truth, and the life. No one comes to the Father except through Me.
How do we participate in this place Jesus has gone to prepare? How do we get there.
Note: He will take us there. He is the way (the road there) and we can’t get to God or God’s house except by faith and trust in Christ.
It is God’s place. He made it to share with us. We will be His guests. He has made 1 way for us to come to His place. We either go that way, or no way.
Don’t let you heart be trouble. He’s getting things ready for you… and one day… you will be where He is… and that is more than enough.
