1. Introduction

e. Key: Source of the conflict is over one question: What is the nature of the new covenant?
Is the new covenant that we have in Christ an extension/ amendment of the old covenant or is it a replacement of the old covenant?

Today my objective is for us to wrestle with that question.
2. Six common components of an ancient near eastern covenant:
a. God communicates to people in terms that they can understand and accept.
b.
Their covenant practices are somewhat foreign to us today.

3. One: Act of initiation into the covenant
a.
The covenant initiation usually involves the shedding of blood.
b. (ESV) — 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.”
Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.” 6 And he believed the Lord, and he counted it to him as righteousness.
7 And he said to him, “I am the Lord who brought you out from Ur of the Chaldeans to give you this land to possess.” 8 But he said, “O Lord God, how am I to know that I shall possess it?”
9 He said to him, “Bring me a heifer three years old, a female goat three years old, a ram three years old, a turtledove, and a young pigeon.”
10 And he brought him all these, cut them in half, and laid each half over against the other.
But he did not cut the birds in half.
11 And when birds of prey came down on the carcasses, Abram drove them away.
12 As the sun was going down, a deep sleep fell on Abram.
And behold, dreadful and great darkness fell upon him.

God, apart from Abraham, walks through the pathway initiating the covenant.

i. (ESV) — 15 To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.

If a covenant made with God cannot be annulled or added to, then how can circumcision no longer be required?
4. Two: Promises of the suzerain (ruler) in the covenant to the ruled people.
a. (ESV) — 21 And when the Lord smelled the pleasing aroma, the Lord said in his heart, “I will never again curse the ground because of man, for the intention of man’s heart is evil from his youth.
Neither will I ever again strike down every living creature as I have done.
b. (ESV) — 5 And he brought him outside and said, “Look toward heaven, and number the stars, if you are able to number them.”
Then he said to him, “So shall your offspring be.”
5. Three: Requirements of the ruled party to the suzerain (ruler)
a. (ESV) — 7 And you, be fruitful and multiply, increase greatly on the earth and multiply in it.”
b. (ESV) — 7 Then he took the Book of the Covenant and read it in the hearing of the people.
And they said, “All that the Lord has spoken we will do, and we will be obedient.”
6. Four: The sign of the covenant

A sign is what you do in order to show that you are still faithful to the covenant.
b. (ESV) — 12 And God said, “This is the sign of the covenant that I make between me and you and every living creature that is with you, for all future generations: 13 I have set my bow in the cloud, and it shall be a sign of the covenant between me and the earth.
c. (ESV) — 15 I will remember my covenant that is between me and you and every living creature of all flesh.
And the waters shall never again become a flood to destroy all flesh.
16 When the bow is in the clouds, I will see it and remember the everlasting covenant between God and every living creature of all flesh that is on the earth.”

Do this, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of me.” 26 For as often as you eat this bread and drink the cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death until he comes.
