Intro- In years past we have spent our time during this devo by speaking about things that we should be thankful for… This year I wanted to focus a little more inward, and look at what makes a thankful person.
16 Rejoice always, 17 pray without ceasing, 18 give thanks in all circumstances; for this is the will of God in Christ Jesus for you.
We are commanded to give thanks in all circumstances. That seems like such an incredibly hard command. Because, it is… If, you haven’t developed certain qualities and mindsets in your life. I want to talk for just a few minutes about...
A thankful person is a Humble person. — it’s hard to teach on humility.
5 I lay down and slept; I woke again, for the Lord sustained me.
They have a spirit of humility when they think of their physical blessings:
Maybe you hear the word “wealth” and you think, “well, that’s not me.” Wealth is really a subjective term as we all have different definitions of what it means to be wealthy. However, each and every one of us are wealthy.
Wealth, Some have more, some have less, but just about all of us have more than a large portion of the world.
Maybe you hear the word “wealth” and you think, “well, that’s not me.” Wealth is really a subjective term as we all have different definitions of what it means to be wealthy. However, each and every one of us are wealthy.
There are some people who take great pride in their physical fitness and health… They may argue that they are healthy due to their dedication and training. That is partially true, but God gave them the ability to do those things. Some people are just built different (roommate in college) (many people born with ailments that prevent them from doing those things)
There are some that take great pride in their business achievements… again, they worked hard for it. However, it is likely that some doors of opportunity that were opened to them, have not been open to others.
There are some who take great pride in their education… there are many who were unable to get the education they wanted due to circumstances beyond their control.
When we truly open our eyes and take an honest look at our lives, we can point to any number of blessings and examine how we have not necessarily earned everything that we sometimes give ourselves credit for.
A humble person is someone who recognizes that, and rather than sticking their chest out with pride over their greatness, they praise their God for His greatness.
They have a spirit of humility when they think of their salvation:
One of the absolute worst things we can do is adopt the mindset that We can have eternal life because of how good we are.
“I’ve baptized x amount of people”
“I taught Bible class for x amount of years”
“I’m at services every time the doors are open”
1 Behold, the Lord’s hand is not shortened, that it cannot save, or his ear dull, that it cannot hear; 2 but your iniquities have made a separation between you and your God, and your sins have hidden his face from you so that he does not hear.
23 for all have sinned and fall short of the glory of God,
We are sinners, and what we have earned, is a huge chasm between us and God and nothing that we do can earn our spot back on the other side.
But God, in His love, gave us a way that none of us deserve.
17 The sacrifices of God are a broken spirit; a broken and contrite heart, O God, you will not despise.
The psalmist beautifully wrote about what was important to God. a Broken Spirit, a contrite heart… A person who has the humility to look themselves in the mirror, and say… “I don’t deserve anything” That person… Is the one who will be thankful for everything.
