Transitions can be rough: 3rd child - “good luck.”
Poor appointment transition (no information, just the words “good luck.”
Good transition: Here’s all the information you need. I’ll be here if you have questions.
God’s people are at an important transitional time.
Moses: The man who has been leading God’s people out of slavery, through the desert and headed to the promised land for over 2 generations, who has served as prophet, priest and king at the same time, has led them into numerous victorious battles, performed miracles in God’s name, is transitioning out.
By transitioning out, I don’t mean retiring, but I’m here if you need me: I mean walking up a mountain, and never coming back. Dying.
By transitioning out, I mean walking up a mountain, and never coming back. Dying.
Joshua, you’re in charge now, good luck.
While he was saying this, a synagogue leader came and knelt before him and said, “My daughter has just died. But come and put your hand on her, and she will live.” Jesus got up and went with him, and so did his disciples. Just then a woman who had been subject to bleeding for twelve years came up behind him and touched the edge of his cloak. She said to herself, “If I only touch his cloak, I will be healed.” Jesus turned and saw her. “Take heart, daughter,” he said, “your faith has healed you.” And the woman was healed at that moment. When Jesus entered the synagogue leader’s house and saw the noisy crowd and people playing pipes, he said, “Go away. The girl is not dead but asleep.” But they laughed at him. After the crowd had been put outside, he went in and took the girl by the hand, and she got up. News of this spread through all that region.
Then Moses summoned Joshua and said to him in the presence of all Israel, “Be strong and courageous, for you must go with this people into the land that the Lord swore to their ancestors to give them, and you must divide it among them as their inheritance.
The Lord gave this command to Joshua son of Nun: “Be strong and courageous, for you will bring the Israelites into the land I promised them on oath, and I myself will be with you.”
Joshua
Be strong and courageous, because you will lead these people to inherit the land I swore to their ancestors to give them. “Be strong and very courageous. Be careful to obey all the law my servant Moses gave you; do not turn from it to the right or to the left, that you may be successful wherever you go.
Joshua, the promised land is right across that river. You’re hopelessly outmatched. I’m out of here. You’re in charge now, good luck.

Needless to say, Joshua is feeling pretty uncertain about himself. Afraid. Vulnerable. Helpless. How do I know how a Bible character is feeling? Because of the words: “Be strong and courageous, ” or, “take heart” in some translations. People do not try to comfort us or encourage us if they don’t think we need it.
Take it easy. Obviously we are stressed.
Take time off. Obviously we are showing signs of burnout.
Take off some weight.
Take courage, obviously there is plenty to worry about.
Courage is not just for comfort. A sense of peace. So we can sleep at night. Courage is for the mission God has called us to.
Unqualified.
Unqualified.
Deuteronomy 34:
Since then, no prophet has risen in Israel like Moses, whom the Lord knew face to face, who did all those signs and wonders the Lord sent him to do in Egypt—to Pharaoh and to all his officials and to his whole land. For no one has ever shown the mighty power or performed the awesome deeds that Moses did in the sight of all Israel.
God does not call the qualified...
Really?
Some never live out their god given mission because they are waiting for qualifications. First disciples: unqualified. Moses. Unqualified. God works his greatest miracles through the unqualified. The difference? The Holy Spirit.
Now Joshua son of Nun was filled with the spirit of wisdom because Moses had laid his hands on him. So the Israelites listened to him and did what the Lord had commanded Moses.
Deeper Command: Go
Unprepared.
Unprepared.
The Lord your God himself will cross over ahead of you. He will destroy these nations before you, and you will take possession of their land. Joshua also will cross over ahead of you, as the Lord said.
Joshua 31:3
God goes ahead of us.
: Go where Jesus intends to go.

God’s word. Still there is the step of faith.
Deeper Command: Go
Take Heart.
“I have told you these things, so that in me you may have peace. In this world you will have trouble. But take heart! I have overcome the world.”
