"Blessed are the pure in heart, for they will see God.” ()
Without holiness no man will see the Lord in heaven ().
The Beatific Vision is only possible here on earth to those with pure hearts.
No other can see the King now.
Sin befogs and beclouds the heart so that one cannot see God.
Purity has here its widest sense and includes everything.
Blessed
This is an adjective which is a word that describes the subject. The Pure in Heart are described here as “Blessed”! Which is to be highly favored by divine grace!
are the pure
This is to be in a state of purity, to be free from guilt, to be clean.
in heart,
Look at where the aim of purity is? The heart! The locus of a person’s thoughts (mind), will, emotions, and knowledge of right and wrong (conscience).
for they
They. It’s only them that are pure in heart! They and they alone will do what?
will see God.
Jesus said that we cannot see the Kingdom of God unless we’re born again!
Our idolatry prevents this. We become like our idols. In it says,
"They have mouths but cannot speak, eyes, but cannot see.” ()
Then it says a verse or two later… "Those who make them are just like them, as are all who trust in them.” ()
You become what you worship! Money can’t see and neither can those who live for it chase after it, waste their lives for it!
Jesus’s words become so clear and filled with light when He said,
"This is what the Lord says: Cursed is the person who trusts in mankind. He makes human flesh his strength, and his heart turns from the Lord. "He will be like a juniper in the Arabah; he cannot see when good comes but dwells in the parched places in the wilderness, in a salt land where no one lives.” ()
If you find security, safety, or confidence in man, it leads to a curse.
Trust in man and trust in God do not go together!
Trust in man leads to becoming like juniper bush in the desert! Dry, barren and whom the wind can just blow away like a tumbleweed!
They cannot see when good comes!
Jesus’s words become so clear and filled with light when He said, "Jesus answered, “The light will be with you only a little longer. Walk while you have the light so that darkness doesn’t overtake you. The one who walks in darkness doesn’t know where he’s going. "While you have the light, believe in the light so that you may become children of light.”...” ()
Our sin causes gross darkness and Jesus brings in the glorious light!
Gives us the light to see light. There’s an interesting verse in where David speaks of being opposed to by his enemies and
contrasts that opposition with God’s faithful covenant love that
reaches to heaven and
His righteousness which is like the highest mountains and
His judgments like the deepest sea.
Then David says..."For the wellspring of life is with you. By means of your light we see light.” ()
It’s in God’s light that we see light.
"For the wellspring of life is with you. By means of your light we see light.” ()
Because God is spirit, His divine essence is invisible (; ; ; ).
Because He is infinitely holy, sinful humans would be destroyed if they were to behold His glory directly ().
Nevertheless, believers “see” God through the insight of faith,
"Now faith is the reality of what is hoped for, the proof of what is not seen.” ()
and Jesus assures His disciples that in seeing Him, they have “seen the Father” ().
In the glorified state, God’s children will “see him as he is” (; ).
"Dear friends, we are God’s children now, and what we will be has not yet been revealed. We know that when he appears, we will be like him because we will see him as he is.” () "They will see his face, and his name will be on their foreheads.” ()
