Missions as Gardening

How many of you have gardens? Any green thumbs in the house?
I am a murderer of plants. We had a plant in our house that I have literally knocked out of the pot multiple times! I thought I had a black thumb. But we decided one year to plant a garden.
Planting a garden 101:
Degrass and weed.
Add topsoil
Fertilize
Water
Weed
Keep out predators: bugs and bunnies
Enjoy the fruits!
We enjoyed those veggies for months! It brought purpose, sustenance, and fruit to our lives! We saved some money as well!
We followed the Gardening 101 I just shared and saw order from chaos. Our backyard was just grass, weeds, and wild vines until we brought order to it.
That is exactly the character of God. He converts chaos into order.
God created the earth out of nothing, but it needed formation and order. It was chaotic in the beginning and uninhabitable for humanity, God’s highest creation.

Creating and Ordering is Divine, but also a calling and mandate.

declares God’s image to be embedded in both sexes.
God invokes blessing and calling on both Adam and Eve.
Their mandate includes:
Fruitfulness that grows exponentially
Exploration and settling the land
Subduing nature and caring for it
These mandates echo what God does in the creation week.
These mandates echo what God does in the creation week.
He brings something out of nothing.
We bring children into the world that didn’t exist.
He gives shape and order to the world for humans to inhabit.
We subdue and care for nature which would be uninhabitable otherwise.
He creates humanity and gives them mandates.
We bear children and train them to carry out mandates.
Humanity tends towards chaos without God.
shows the tendency with examples such as:
Cain (), (Sin is crouching at your door…)
Lamech (), (10X worse than Cain) and
the general population during Noah’s generation (). (every inclination…evil)
God continues to reach into a chaotic world to call it to be “cultivators of order”.
Abram (), Isaac () Jacob, ()
Joseph, Moses.
Abram:

2 “I will make you into a great nation,

and I will bless you;

I will make your name great,

and you will be a blessing. i

3 I will bless those who bless you,

and whoever curses you I will curse;

and all peoples on earth

will be blessed through you.”

Isaac:
Jacob:
Joseph:
Moses:
Joshua:
David: ()

5 The LORD saw how great the wickedness of the human race had become on the earth, and that every inclination of the thoughts of the human heart was only evil all the time.

46 This day the LORD will deliver you into my hands, and I’ll strike you down and cut off your head. This very day I will give the carcasses of the Philistine army to the birds and the wild animals, and the whole world will know that there is a God in Israel. 47 All those gathered here will know that it is not by sword or spear that the LORD saves; for the battle is the LORD’s, and he will give all of you into our hands.”

As soon as God runs out of ambassadors, chaos ensues:

(, ) Subjective morality

6 In those days Israel had no king; everyone did as they saw fit.

Save the cat or the baby? Truth and our professors at UMass!
(, ) Conscience is fallible.
The worldly conscience is in direct opposition to God. His thoughts are higher than ours and it is wreaking havoc with our mental/spiritual health.

12 There is a way that appears to be right,

but in the end it leads to death.

4 My conscience is clear, but that does not make me innocent. It is the Lord who judges me.

No God=No Morality

4 They are surprised that you do not join them in their reckless, wild living, and they heap abuse on you.

Nietzsche claimed that God was dead, and therefore the basis for objective morality. But theism isn’t the answer to chaos. Religion isn’t the answer to chaos. A new creation is the solution and a new creation doesn’t come without the Creator.

Jesus came to usher in the kingdom of God and to create a new kind of humanity.

His purpose was to create in himself one new humanity out of the two, thus making peace, 16 and in one body to reconcile both of them to God through the cross, by which he put to death their hostility. 17 He came and preached peace to you who were far away and peace to those who were near. 18 For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.

Do you yearn for peace, a common brotherhood, a better community, dignity and respect for all? Missions is the mandate!
God sees all of us as broken and in need of restoration. He wants to help you cultivate the garden of your heart.

17 Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, the new creation has come: The old has gone, the new is here!

We can so easily see the sins of others, but rarely look at our own.
God longs for everyone to come to repentance:

9 The Lord is not slow in keeping his promise, as some understand slowness. Instead he is patient with you, not wanting anyone to perish, but everyone to come to repentance.

No Other Name!

12 Salvation is found in no one else, for there is no other name under heaven given to mankind by which we must be saved.”

no other provision!

No Other Provision!

13 for, “Everyone who calls on the name of the Lord will be saved.” p

14 How, then, can they call on the one they have not believed in? And how can they believe in the one of whom they have not heard? And how can they hear without someone preaching to them? 15 And how can anyone preach unless they are sent? As it is written: “How beautiful are the feet of those who bring good news!” q

No Other Method!

,

We need missionaries to...

18 Then Jesus came to them and said, “All authority in heaven and on earth has been given to me. 19 Therefore go and make disciples of all nations, baptizing them in the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, 20 and teaching them to obey everything I have commanded you. And surely I am with you always, to the very end of the age.”

Do Transgenerational Discipleship

Transgenerational

2 And the things you have heard me say in the presence of many witnesses entrust to reliable people who will also be qualified to teach others.

Go to those who haven’t heard!

20 It has always been my ambition to preach the gospel where Christ was not known, so that I would not be building on someone else’s foundation.

Short term missions is not enough.

no greater empowerment!

8 But you will receive power when the Holy Spirit comes on you; and you will be my witnesses in Jerusalem, and in all Judea and Samaria, and to the ends of the earth.”

( ) Cultivating Conscience
Everyone cares about corruption, but few are willing to invest in cultivation.
Our hearts long for the garden and Jesus came to bring
Know
You are bringing glory to God by bringing order to your private and public world. By investing in and participating in God’s mission, you are bringing glory to God by bringing order to other’s minds and hearts through the gospel.
Why
We all see the chaos in front of us and the general society is growingly hostile to missions and in doing so, it has unwittingly shot itself in the foot. Missions is the key to private and societal health. Jesus brings peace to souls. When society heckles missions the loudest is when she needs it the most. To not invest in missions is to show contempt for the gospel and for the people who have yet to receive it.
Do
Invest in and participate in missions.
Why
The fate of the world is partially in your hands. No missions, no gospel/no disciples=no order and multitudes without a witness and eternal life.
