Cleansing a leper. Mark 1:40-45

Inro: Leprosy was a terrible disease in the Bible days.
Albert Barnes: “No disease with which the human family has been afflicted had been more dreadful than that is often mentioned in the Bible as leprosy. It first exhibits itself on the surface on then skin. There are forms of the disease in which it commences at the extremities: the joints separate, the fingers, toes, and other members one by one fall off; the malady thus gradually approaches the seat of life. The victim is thus doomed to see himself dying.
Leprosy like, sin is also an incurable and dreadful problem. Sin has no cure outside of salvation.
What we see happen with this man through the power of Jesus, is the same that will happen with us to solve any sin problem.

I.His compassion. VS 40-41

VS 40.
Mark 1:40 KJV 1900
40 And there came a leper to him, beseeching him, and kneeling down to him, and saying unto him, If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
The compassion of Jesus is like no other.
a. The leper came to Jesus with a great sense of need.
Luke 5:12 KJV 1900
12 And it came to pass, when he was in a certain city, behold a man full of leprosy: who seeing Jesus fell on his face, and besought him, saying, Lord, if thou wilt, thou canst make me clean.
“Full of leprosy”
b. He must have been in the advanced stages of this awful disease. According to the law, a leper was not allowed to come close to people.
Leviticus 13:45 KJV 1900
45 And the leper in whom the plague is, his clothes shall be rent, and his head bare, and he shall put a covering upon his upper lip, and shall cry, Unclean, unclean.
Leviticus
c. In the gospel of Matthew it tells us he “worshipped Jesus”
d. Here in Mark “If thou wilt, thou canst make me clean”
In other words; If you might be willing you are able to cleanse me”
e. He had faith Jesus could heal him. He did not know Jesus’ will. This stirred up Jesus’ compassion “pity” We see this often during the life of Jesus.
f. He had compassion on the people who were as sheep without a shepherd.
f.
g. He had compassion on the multitude of people that were hunger.
h. He had compassion on the blind.
i. He had compassion on the widow whose son had died.
j. Here he has compassion on the leper.
2. He comppasion was visible. VS 41
Mark 1:41 KJV 1900
41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
a. Compassion is more then just having sympathy for someone. When we see Jesus having compassion for someone, He did something about it.
b. In the case of the leper, Jesus showed compassion in three ways.
“He put forth His hands” Instead of turning from the leper in fear, Jesus reached out to him. (If you have a sin problem, Jesus has compassion for you, and will reach out when you call on Him)
He touched the leper. No one touched a leper. It would endanger the person of getting leprosy. He may have been years since he had felt the touch of another human. (Are we reaching out to those in need, those tha no one else cares about?)
He spoke healing to him. We will look at the details.
c. We a sinner come to for spiritual cleansing, Jesus will have compassion. He will not turn away. In pity He will reach out with saving help.

II. His Command. VS 41-42

Mark 1:41 KJV 1900
41 And Jesus, moved with compassion, put forth his hand, and touched him, and saith unto him, I will; be thou clean.
Jesus says “I will”
Before Jesus gave the healing command, He assures the leper that He is willing. He said “I will’ or “I am willing”
a. Did Jesus heal everyone that came to Him? I don’t know, but everyone one that came to Him that we see in the Bible healed. There was a time where he didn’t heal because of a lack of faith.
Turn there
Look at mark 6: 3-6
b. There are times when healing does not come even when asked in faith.
Paul asked for healing from a thorn in his side.
2 Corinthians 12:9 KJV 1900
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
II Corn
c. God is always able to heal, but it is not always His will. He knows what is best in every situation.
2. Next, the power of His command. “be thou clean”
a. With His word, that is all that it took and the mans leprosy was gone.
Mark 1:42 KJV 1900
42 And as soon as he had spoken, immediately the leprosy departed from him, and he was cleansed.
b. His skin was clean again. If he has lost any fingers or toes, they were restored.
c. In the O.T (H.W)
3. God still heals today, but why don’t we see more miracles?
a. It is not because of a lack of power.
Jeremiah 32:17 KJV 1900
17 Ah Lord God! behold, thou hast made the heaven and the earth by thy great power and stretched out arm, and there is nothing too hard for thee:
Jeremiah
b. It may be because we don’t ask.
James 4:2 KJV 1900
2 Ye lust, and have not: ye kill, and desire to have, and cannot obtain: ye fight and war, yet ye have not, because ye ask not.
James
c. We may have the wrong motives.
James
James 4:3 KJV 1900
3 Ye ask, and receive not, because ye ask amiss, that ye may consume it upon your lusts.
d. We may have stopped praying to soon.
Luke 18:1 KJV 1900
1 And he spake a parable unto them to this end, that men ought always to pray, and not to faint;
e. We may have sin in our life.
Psalm 66:18 KJV 1900
18 If I regard iniquity in my heart, The Lord will not hear me:
Psalms
f. We may not be obeying the bible.
Proverbs 28:9 KJV 1900
9 He that turneth away his ear from hearing the law, Even his prayer shall be abomination.
Proverbs
g. We may spiritually need the ailment
1 Peter 3:7 KJV 1900
7 Likewise, ye husbands, dwell with them according to knowledge, giving honour unto the wife, as unto the weaker vessel, and as being heirs together of the grace of life; that your prayers be not hindered.
2 Corinthians 12:9 KJV 1900
9 And he said unto me, My grace is sufficient for thee: for my strength is made perfect in weakness. Most gladly therefore will I rather glory in my infirmities, that the power of Christ may rest upon me.
II Corinthians
h. It may not be God’s will.
1 John 5:14–15 KJV 1900
14 And this is the confidence that we have in him, that, if we ask any thing according to his will, he heareth us: 15 And if we know that he hear us, whatsoever we ask, we know that we have the petitions that we desired of him.
4. When it comes to God’s spiritual healing on the soul, we have God’s promise that He not willing that any should perish.
2 Peter 3:9 KJV 1900
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
II Peter
a. Sin will ruin your life and send you to hell forever, but that is not God’s will. He is both willing an able to save everyone who will repent and put their faith in Him.
b. Like the leper, you must come to Jesus and humbly ask for cleansing.

III.His Charge . VS 43-45

III.His Charge . VS 43-45

Mark 1:43 KJV 1900
43 And he straitly charged him, and forthwith sent him away;
“Straightly charged him”
Mark 1:43 NASB95
43 And He sternly warned him and immediately sent him away,
Mark 1:43
This was a firm command, the rest of the command we find in the next verse.
Mark 1:44 KJV 1900
44 And saith unto him, See thou say nothing to any man: but go thy way, shew thyself to the priest, and offer for thy cleansing those things which Moses commanded, for a testimony unto them.
Mark 1:22
a. Jesus sent to healed leper to the priest to fulfil the law.
Leviticus 14:2–3 KJV 1900
2 This shall be the law of the leper in the day of his cleansing: He shall be brought unto the priest: 3 And the priest shall go forth out of the camp; and the priest shall look, and, behold, if the plague of leprosy be healed in the leper;
Leviticus 14
b. Part of the reason that Jesus sent him to the priest was to confirm in the priest mind that Jesus had fully healed him.
c. Jesus told him to not tell anyone. Why? Remember, Jesus main purpose was to preach the gospel first. Look back at VS 35-38
d. His time here on earth was about the message not the miracles.
e. But this man was pretty excited about what had happened to him, and he tells everyone.
Mark 1:45 KJV 1900
45 But he went out, and began to publish it much, and to blaze abroad the matter, insomuch that Jesus could no more openly enter into the city, but was without in desert places: and they came to him from every quarter.
Mark 1:45 NASB95
45 But he went out and began to proclaim it freely and to spread the news around, to such an extent that Jesus could no longer publicly enter a city, but stayed out in unpopulated areas; and they were coming to Him from everywhere.
f. He was told to tell no one and he told everyone. We are told to tell everyone, but.....
g. Because he told everyone, Jesus could no longer openly go into the city. He had to go stay to solitary places to preach, and the people till followed Him there.
h. The former leper may have thought he was helping Jesus, but in reality by disobeying Him he was hindering His work.
i. We must always obey God even when we do not understand.
Conclusion: Sin is a terrible curse that is similar to leprosy. We are all born sinners. We have all sinned. Sin has no human cure and will lead you to eternal death. You must repent of your sin and place your faith in Jesus’ payment on the cross.
If you are a Christian, sin in your life will cause separation from God. You will lose your fellowship with Him. Again, there is no human cure. If you have sinned, you must confess your sin, ans let the clean you.
1 John 1:9 KJV 1900
9 If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins, and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
