I. The Law’s Creator

Romans 7:13 KJV 1900
13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.
Romans 7:14 KJV 1900
14 For we know that the law is spiritual: but I am carnal, sold under sin.
Romans 7:12 KJV 1900
12 Wherefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy, and just, and good.
Psalm 99:9 KJV 1900
9 Exalt the Lord our God, And worship at his holy hill; For the Lord our God is holy.
Deuteronomy 32:4 KJV 1900
4 He is the Rock, his work is perfect: For all his ways are judgment: A God of truth and without iniquity, Just and right is he.
Psalm 25:8 KJV 1900
8 Good and upright is the Lord: Therefore will he teach sinners in the way.

II. The Law’s Charge

A. It Exposes

Romans 3:20 KJV 1900
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.
Romans 7:7 KJV 1900
7 What shall we say then? Is the law sin? God forbid. Nay, I had not known sin, but by the law: for I had not known lust, except the law had said, Thou shalt not covet.
The Law uncovers what is hidden in the heart
The law reveals what lurks in the shadows of the heart
The Law because of its focus cannot turn a blind eye! It could not do but what God who created it assigned it to do

B. It Escalates

With every turning of the page of the law, sin is increased
With every “thou shalt not,” sin abounds
With every restriction, sin expands
Romans 7:13 KJV 1900
13 Was then that which is good made death unto me? God forbid. But sin, that it might appear sin, working death in me by that which is good; that sin by the commandment might become exceeding sinful.

C. It Evaluates

Romans 7:15 KJV 1900
15 For that which I do I allow not: for what I would, that do I not; but what I hate, that do I.
Romans 7:17–18 KJV 1900
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.

III. The Law’s Constraint

A. It Provokes the Flesh

Romans 7:15 NKJV
15 For what I am doing, I do not understand. For what I will to do, that I do not practice; but what I hate, that I do.
Romans 7:17–18 KJV 1900
17 Now then it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me. 18 For I know that in me (that is, in my flesh,) dwelleth no good thing: for to will is present with me; but how to perform that which is good I find not.
Romans 7:19–20 KJV 1900
19 For the good that I would I do not: but the evil which I would not, that I do. 20 Now if I do that I would not, it is no more I that do it, but sin that dwelleth in me.

B. It does not Purify the Flesh

Romans 3:19 KJV 1900
19 Now we know that what things soever the law saith, it saith to them who are under the law: that every mouth may be stopped, and all the world may become guilty before God.
Romans 3:20 KJV 1900
20 Therefore by the deeds of the law there shall no flesh be justified in his sight: for by the law is the knowledge of sin.

IV. Christ Conquerors what the Law Could Not

Romans 7:24 KJV 1900
24 O wretched man that I am! who shall deliver me from the body of this death?
The Law could expose sin but could not eradicate it
The Law could tell what is wrong but it could not treat what was wrong.
The Law could not save the sinner because it was weak through the flesh
Even after we are born again, saved, regenerated, reconciled with God, the law cannot help us in living right.
The law could not save the sinner and neither can it sanctify the saints.
For this very reason Paul does not call out what can deliver but Who can deliver me!
Every believer stands on the finished work of Christ. Through Him we are free from sin
Through Him we are dead to the law
Through Him we are delivered from the law
Through Him we now serve in the newness of the Spirit
Paul knew that victory does not come from something but from SOMEONE!
Hear his
Romans 7:25 KJV 1900
25 I thank God through Jesus Christ our Lord. So then with the mind I myself serve the law of God; but with the flesh the law of sin.
1 Corinthians 15:51–57 KJV 1900
51 Behold, I shew you a mystery; We shall not all sleep, but we shall all be changed, 52 In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed. 53 For this corruptible must put on incorruption, and this mortal must put on immortality. 54 So when this corruptible shall have put on incorruption, and this mortal shall have put on immortality, then shall be brought to pass the saying that is written, Death is swallowed up in victory. 55 O death, where is thy sting? O grave, where is thy victory? 56 The sting of death is sin; and the strength of sin is the law. 57 But thanks be to God, which giveth us the victory through our Lord Jesus Christ.
