John 15:12–17 ESV
“This is my commandment, that you love one another as I have loved you. Greater love has no one than this, that someone lay down his life for his friends. You are my friends if you do what I command you. No longer do I call you servants, for the servant does not know what his master is doing; but I have called you friends, for all that I have heard from my Father I have made known to you. You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you. These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
Jesus gave us a commandment:
to LOVE ONE ANOTHER
as He LOVED US
How much does Jesus love us?
to the cross & back
the highest level of love
you and I are no longer just servants of God but also friends
we know this b/c we know what the Father has said
v.16 He says something interesting
John 15:16 ESV
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
John 15:16
Jesus says that we did not choose Him
BUT HE CHOSE US!
and then He says that He appointed us
Appointed : designate or to place and equip for a specific purpose or task
He designed us for a specific purpose and equipped us with gifts and a super power
HOLY SPIRIT
that we would bear fruit
v.17 explains what that is
John 15:17 ESV
These things I command you, so that you will love one another.
we bear fruit when we love one another the way that Christ loves us
back in v.16
John 15:16 ESV
You did not choose me, but I chose you and appointed you that you should go and bear fruit and that your fruit should abide, so that whatever you ask the Father in my name, he may give it to you.
not only did Jesus ask us to bear fruit but He said that our fruit should ABIDE
everyone say ABIDE
ABIDE: other places translated endurance or steadfastness
one of the virtues of the Christian life cited in the NT, produced during suffering and which itself could produce character
James 2:1–2 ESV
My brothers, show no partiality as you hold the faith in our Lord Jesus Christ, the Lord of glory. For if a man wearing a gold ring and fine clothing comes into your assembly, and a poor man in shabby clothing also comes in,
James 1:2–4 ESV
Count it all joy, my brothers, when you meet trials of various kinds, for you know that the testing of your faith produces steadfastness. And let steadfastness have its full effect, that you may be perfect and complete, lacking in nothing.
our fruit should endure, persevere, be all in, not just a sunny day fan but sitting in the sleeting rain and a painted gut screaming like a teenage girl with Beber Fever kind of perseverance
when the going gets tough the fruit of God’s people ABIDE
LET’S GO TO THE BEGINNING OF THE CHAPTER
Jesus gives us a picture of the Christian faith
John 15:1 ESV
“I am the true vine, and my Father is the vinedresser.
Jesus says that He is not just A vine but the true vine
Jeremiah 2:21 ESV
Yet I planted you a choice vine, wholly of pure seed. How then have you turned degenerate and become a wild vine?
there are many vines in life
but only one is pure and holy
others produce different kinds of fruit
But Jesus says that He is THE VINE
He also says that God the Father is the vinedresser
farmer of the vineyard
takes care of the vines so that they stay healthy
John 15:2-
John 15:2 ESV
Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
My grandmother had some apple trees in her yard and I remember her pruning those trees to keep them healthy
she took such pride in keeping them properly pruned and they grew an abundance of apples
If she left the tree to grow wild without cutting anything back it would have killed off or made the tree unfruitful
That’s what God is doing
John 15:
John 15:3–5 ESV
Already you are clean because of the word that I have spoken to you. Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me. I am the vine; you are the branches. Whoever abides in me and I in him, he it is that bears much fruit, for apart from me you can do nothing.
Jesus is the vine
we are the branches
when we abide in Him
we will bear much fruit
John 15:4 ESV
Abide in me, and I in you. As the branch cannot bear fruit by itself, unless it abides in the vine, neither can you, unless you abide in me.
Abide in Jesus
and He abides in you
A branch cannot bear fruit by itself
unless it abides in the vine
Niether can you unless you abide in Jesus
end of v. 5 He says
FOR APART FROM ME (JESUS), YOU CAN DO NOTHING
If you are taking notes I want you to write this down:
Without Jesus I can do nothing
If an apple tree branch is removed from the apple tree
it will no longer produce apples
WHY?
Because the vine or the trunk of the plant is what supplies the branches with what they need to produce fruit
Jesus is our source and supplier for us to be fruitful
it’s not a possibility that if you connect with Jesus that you may produce fruit
IT’S A GUARANTEE
Jesus is a faithful provider to His people
Philippians 4:19 ESV
And my God will supply every need of yours according to his riches in glory in Christ Jesus.
Just like he provided a lamb for a sacrifice when Abraham was about to give his son as an offering
Just like when the hungry lions became full just before Daniel was thrown into the lions den
Just as Noah recieved not only the plans but also the materials to build an ark before the floods came
Just like how God supplied the miss-spoken and backwards Moses with the words to say to lead God’s people out of slavery
just as God delivered you from your sinful ways and set you on a path for His purpose and equipped you to build His Kingdom
What are you saying?
GOD WILL SUPPLY WHAT YOU NEED BECAUSE HE IS FAITHFUL
That’s why Jesus said in v.2
John 15:2 ESV
Every branch in me that does not bear fruit he takes away, and every branch that does bear fruit he prunes, that it may bear more fruit.
b/c if you are connected to Jesus then you will bear fruit
if not then you are a dead branch
one that is not producing fruit then you are at risk to hurt other branches around you and the Father will cut you off
you have been given what you need to produce fruit but you are not taking to it
If you are a fruitful branch then you need to watch for areas of your life that are not fruitful because they need to be pruned
when we have unfruitful areas of our lives they are taking the resources that have been given to us for a purpose and are keeping us from reaching our maximum fruitfulness
Christians in the house this morning who are fruitful:
ARE YOU LIVING TO YOUR MAXIMUM FRUITFULNESS?
If not what needs pruned?
what’s keeping you
Some of you are looking for fruit and not seeing any
you are in one of a few places
1. you were fruitful and have become unfruitful
you are at risk of being cut off from the vine because you are not taking what is being given to you to produce fruit
2. you have already been cut off from the vine but because you are laying under the tree you feel that you are still “near” the vine and must be okay
you are dead if you are not connected to Him
3. You have some things in your life that you are proud of but they are not true fruit from God they are from another tree
you may think that your good works are a sign of your faith but Jesus is not your source and supplier
WHAT DO YOU NEED TO DO?
there is a word in this passage
11 Times
Abide: ABIDE: other places translated endurance or steadfastness
one of the virtues of the Christian life cited in the NT, produced during suffering and which itself could produce character
Abide in Him because He abides in you
have endurance in Jesus not just on the sunny days but every moment of everyday
and know that He will always abide in you
because He is faithful
WHERE DO YOU FIND HIM IF YOU’VE LOST YOUR WAY?
the same place where you left Him
because He is faithful
He does not change
Hebrews 13:8 ESV
Jesus Christ is the same yesterday and today and forever.
Malachi 3:6 ESV
“For I the Lord do not change; therefore you, O children of Jacob, are not consumed.
Oh sinner,
1 John 1:9 ESV
If we confess our sins, he is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness.
Those who are weary
Hebrews 10:23 ESV
Let us hold fast the confession of our hope without wavering, for he who promised is faithful.
Those who are in a battle
2 Thessalonians 3:3 ESV
But the Lord is faithful. He will establish you and guard you against the evil one.
YOU CAN FIND GOD WHERE HE HAS ALWAYS BEEN DOING WHAT HE HAS ALWAYS DONE
If we do not abide...
John 15:6 ESV
If anyone does not abide in me he is thrown away like a branch and withers; and the branches are gathered, thrown into the fire, and burned.
like kindling to start a fire
so we MUST ABIDE
endure
with steadfastness
John 15:8
John 15:7 ESV
If you abide in me, and my words abide in you, ask whatever you wish, and it will be done for you.
so when we are in God’s will,
we will learn to ask for the things that God answers
John 15:8 ESV
By this my Father is glorified, that you bear much fruit and so prove to be my disciples.
when we bear fruit God the Father is glorified
we prove to be disciples
it’s a mark of us abiding in Him
John 15:
John 15:9–11 ESV
As the Father has loved me, so have I loved you. Abide in my love. If you keep my commandments, you will abide in my love, just as I have kept my Father’s commandments and abide in his love. These things I have spoken to you, that my joy may be in you, and that your joy may be full.
we must learn to abide b/c He abides
