Intro

at the shift of THX to Christmas—always struggle—THX under appreciated...
Doesn’t have the songs...
Doesn’t have the symbols… (tree at Rockefeller Center)
Doesn’t have the Sales...
In our nation, THX has a long and noble history—in some circles, greater than Christmas---certainly longer and richer than CHristmas as we know it today, but in a day when economy is king, it simply can’t compete...
THis issue bleeds into the whole dilemma we face each year of complaint about how commercialized CHristmas is while continuing to make great hay out of black friday sales and such...
What is there to do?
CF
1 Chronicles 12:32 ESV
32 Of Issachar, men who had understanding of the times, to know what Israel ought to do, 200 chiefs, and all their kinsmen under their command.
It would be nice to know what to do about Christmas and commercialization and the loss of Thanksgiving--
but what if those things are only symptoms...
I don’t mean to treat them lightly—bleeding is only a symptom with a gunshot wound but I think it’s worth treating!
In this series, dealing with the fact that if we are to know what to do, we must understand what is
Last week--
Judges 21:15 ESV
15 And the people had compassion on Benjamin because the Lord had made a breach in the tribes of Israel.
Judges 21:25 ESV
25 In those days there was no king in Israel. Everyone did what was right in his own eyes.
How can you get well-meaning people to do the wrong thing? Convince them that the wrong thing is the right thing—either directly or indirectly (right result)
*** Believers and non-believers aloke
So how can you deal with this?
Jesus--
NIght before crucifixion- talked, then prayed...
John 17:14–19 ESV
14 I have given them your word, and the world has hated them because they are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 15 I do not ask that you take them out of the world, but that you keep them from the evil one. 16 They are not of the world, just as I am not of the world. 17 Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth. 18 As you sent me into the world, so I have sent them into the world. 19 And for their sake I consecrate myself, that they also may be sanctified in truth.
John 17:13–19 ESV
13 But now I am coming to you, and these things I speak in the world, that they may have my joy fulfilled in themselves.
Part of what’s surprising to some—Jesus acknowledged that we live in a world that’s hostile to Him and to His followers
...
NO one is surprised at the struggle—CF 2Pac 2002- “Fame”—the struggle is real—poverty, racism
became a meme on social media- water bottle at fire extinguisher; empty toilet paper roll...
“teh struggle is real”
“oh no they only doubled my
Triple, Venti, Half Sweet, Non-Fat, Caramel Macchiato.
“the struggle is real
In TX- schools fielding issues...
[OTHER CULTURE / SOCIAL ISSUES]
*** Breakdown
DECONSTRUCTION--
brekdown language
highlight questionable intergrity
apply social pressure to sympathetic figures
*** DIVIDE CHURCH (sodom & gomorroah—sexual immorality / greed) (two sides caught up in social issues—throwing stones at one another)
BUT HERE, Jesus is bearing soul before Father—not praying that world’s hostility be taken away
Here’s what needs to come through--
If the world’s hostility is not our real struggle, then opposing the wold’s hostility is not our real solution
(neither exual immorality and sinful subcultures nor …)
*** The role of the church is not to preserve American culture- it’s to present Kingdom of God culture to America and every other nation
sometimes involves each os us...
but turning polit
*** as individuals...
don’t need to organize boycott if just develop a distaste...
don’t need to boycott if win peolpe...
Cf Ephsesus—got angry b/c lost business...
Sanctivication--
special reservation
3 elements:
1- separation
2- association
3- preparation for special purpose
*** all three—Jesus praying—why?
THAT”S THE STRUGGLE—I must let go of every former attachment...
BUT LOOK—teh issue for us today is how this works in our world
*** Snctification changes our character—separation, association, preparation—become whole and healthy…
1 Thessalonians 5:23 ESV
23 Now may the God of peace himself sanctify you completely, and may your whole spirit and soul and body be kept blameless at the coming of our Lord Jesus Christ.
** Sanctification changes our approach (to problms)
*** Abigail advantage
*** Sanctification changes our agenda
DEVIL went down to GA
*** Start living as sent people
Acts 26:16–28 ESV
16 But rise and stand upon your feet, for I have appeared to you for this purpose, to appoint you as a servant and witness to the things in which you have seen me and to those in which I will appear to you, 17 delivering you from your people and from the Gentiles—to whom I am sending you 18 to open their eyes, so that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, that they may receive forgiveness of sins and a place among those who are sanctified by faith in me.’ 19 “Therefore, O King Agrippa, I was not disobedient to the heavenly vision, 20 but declared first to those in Damascus, then in Jerusalem and throughout all the region of Judea, and also to the Gentiles, that they should repent and turn to God, performing deeds in keeping with their repentance. 21 For this reason the Jews seized me in the temple and tried to kill me. 22 To this day I have had the help that comes from God, and so I stand here testifying both to small and great, saying nothing but what the prophets and Moses said would come to pass: 23 that the Christ must suffer and that, by being the first to rise from the dead, he would proclaim light both to our people and to the Gentiles.” 24 And as he was saying these things in his defense, Festus said with a loud voice, “Paul, you are out of your mind; your great learning is driving you out of your mind.” 25 But Paul said, “I am not out of my mind, most excellent Festus, but I am speaking true and rational words. 26 For the king knows about these things, and to him I speak boldly. For I am persuaded that none of these things has escaped his notice, for this has not been done in a corner. 27 King Agrippa, do you believe the prophets? I know that you believe.” 28 And Agrippa said to Paul, “In a short time would you persuade me to be a Christian?”
