The Last Supper (Pastor Steve Balvanz)
Introduction
Mark's account of the The Last Supper focuses succinctly on three key points as Jesus' crucifixion drew near. And woven into this passage are precious evidences of God's providence in the life of Jesus that fuel our worship and build our faith in the midst of trials God Ordains for our lives.
- This is a great example of God's providence
- We believe in the providence of God, but we do not believe half enough in it - Charles H. Spurgeon
- Luke 22:22
- Parallel Passages: Matthew 26:17-35, Luke 22:9-38, John 13:21-30
I. Preparation for Passover (Mark 14:12-16)
Jesus' omniscient directive to the two disciples is reminiscent of how He intsructed them to obtain a donkey on Palm Sunday (Mark 11:1-6). God is sovereign in porchestrating every detail of our lives!
II. Prediction of Betrayal (Mark 14:17-21)
Jesus did not fall into Judas's trap but rather Judas, by his wicked rejection of Christ, became an instrument of God's plan. An unholy man in the hands of a holy God was used to accomplish a holy purpose!
- Psalm 41:9
- Isaiah 53
- Psalm 22
- Perhaps it is the most dangerous of all positions for a man to become well known and much respected by the religious world, and yet to be rotten at the core...To have a fair reputation and a false heart is to stand upon the brink of hell. - Charles H. Spurgeon

III. Presentation of the (Mark 14:22-26)
The Lord's Supper is a sober celebration in which we use bread and juice to sumbolically remind us of the body and blood of Jesus sacrificed for our sin. It is a time to look back at the cross and to look forward to the promise of His kingdom.
