Good Evening, its good to see everybody tonight.
Turn with me in your Bibles tonight to .
I am going to start by giving a little backround by backing up to verse 18.
The title of the message is New Wine for New Wineskins.
Do you believe that?
Mark 2:19
Now what in the world is this all about?
New wine for New wineskins.
Jesus was Jewish, and when Jesus came to this Earth He was the Jewish MEssiah, He was the Christ which literally means the anointed one.
Jewish people have been looking for the Messiah for centuries and now even to this day many still are looking for the Messiah.
As Christians we know Jesus is the MEssiah thus the Messiah has already come.
the Jewish people of Jesus’ day had a hard time believing He was the Messiah, because they believed that the Messiah would lead them in a big military revival.
At the time when Jesus came Rome was the undisputed ruler of the world.
So for the Jews of the first century there was so much uproar and hatred for the Romans because they were opressing the Jews and they had not been free for a very long time.
So they were praying Oh God send the Messiah so that we can have this yoke of Roman authority off of us.
So when Jesus comes in He doesnt say anything about throwing the Roman yoke off of them, rather He talks about getting the yoke of sin off of their lives.
He talked about the fact “you guys are so religious but you dont have a relationship with God.
Then He said you can only have a relationship with God through me.
Well that blew their minds because they were skilled and educated in the Torah and the law the first 5 books of the OT they thought they knew everything thee was to know about God.
Yet when the Son of God, the Messiah, the very Messiah they said they had been looking for came and stood right in front of them, they not only did not believe it but most of them rejected Him as a heretic.
So here they come to Him and they say hey listen you claim to be the Messiah but you never fast, or do these religous things, you dont keep the Sabbath the way we think you ought to keep the Sabbath, He was always in trouble with the religious leaders but Jesus always found a hearing with the common people.
Do you see the contrast?
So here He is He is trying to give them some examples, He says hey guys theres gonna be plenty of time for fasting when I am gone.
Im the bridegroom and I am with you and you have no need to fast, but when I am gone yes you will fast.
Then He gives 2 illustrations, 2 common sense stories.
Jesus constantly just gives common sense ideas and pictures.
Now I dont think preachers ought to preach with alot of big words I dont think we need to preach way up here down to people.
I think we ought to just use plain language because the smartest person who ever lived was Jesus and He used simple language that even children could understand.
Jesus is constantly asking questions, He is constantly giving illustrations and He is using both as teaching tools.
He says hey guys let me tell you something, when you have an old garment and its got a whole in it, you dont attach or sew on a new peice of fabric, because when you go to wash it and being stretching it that new peice of garment is gonna pull a bigger whole in the garment your trying to mend.
Thats just common sense you dont do that.
You dont put the new and attatch it to the old, you got that?
Then He says let me give you another illustration, you dont put new wine into old wineskins.
Now I am not totally versed on all that there was to know but the general idea is this.
In the first century they would put wine into a bag made of leather or skin.
It was a brand new bag, and the reason you put new wine into new wineskins, is because as the wine ferments gasses would be emmitted and it would cause the skins to stretch.
You say I dont understand that, sure you do everytime you drink a big diet coke your belly is bigger when you finish than when you started drinking it.
Because it has alot of bubbles in it.
So now you understand whats going on.
So Jesus says you dont put new wine into old wineskins, because if you do that, the elasticity, the flexible nature of the skin is gone and whats going to happen is as this new wine begins to ferment and it expands the skins are gonna burst and the new wine is gonna spill and everything is ruined.
You dont put new wine into old wineskins...
Now what in the world was He saying with these 2 illustrations?
Judaism is the backdrop of Christianity but Christianity did not come to fit in with Judaism.
Christianity is a NEw covenant, so what He is saying is I am doing a new thing.
Christianity comes out of Judaism but I am not coming to spread Judaism I am coming with a fresh Word with NEw wine and NEw life and if you want life you have to come to me, you dont go to the OT law to find life, you dont find life in the law you find it in me.
If you want new life you need me.
You are the wineskin, and when the wine of eternal life is poured into you that new wine in the new wineskin it will stretch and be perfect fit there.
New wine has to go into new wineskins it cant go into judaism.
Thats exactly what He is teaching theres no doubt about it.
So what do we learn from that?
Jesus Gives New Wine
Jesus uses the word wine here as a symbolic reference to new life.
He spoke about new wine, Judaism is Jesus’ day was so legalistic so traditional, so not what it was origionally supposed to be it was dead.
It had lost its life, it was just a bunch of rules and regulations it had a form of Godliness but denied its power.
Instead of worshipping God they worshipped there religious rituals, they were so maticulous about keeping every little jot and tittle of what they had made up to be religion that they had lost God in the process.
Consequently most people even the Jewish people had turned away from really being involed in the synagogue in fact most people in the first century they were just frustrated with the religious leaders and the rabbis that they just turned away.
They were not going to church anymore, and you know its alot like America today.
So Jesus comes into this old setting and there had not been a prophet for 400 years before JTB come on the scene to prepare the way of the Lord.
Malachi wrote and then for 400 years God was silent for 400 years.
Can you imagine?
Nobody had a word from God, from right now to 400 years in the future, what would that be like?
What kind of society would that bring?
But then JTB starts preaching in the wilderness and he says hey guys the Messiah is coming He is just about here I am pointing to Him and all of a sudden everyone is getting excited, Pharisees are coming out Sadduccees are coming out, Scribes are coming out, Scribes lawers all these people wanna know is this guy the real deal?
John the Baptist was ushering in the New wine and people started to get a little taste with him but Jesus would give them more than just a little taste He would give them New wine in New wineskins.
You know Jeremiah was one of Jesus’ favorite prophets to quote, and heres what Jeremiah said about the New Wine, this New Covenant
Jeremiah
Do you see that?
Its not like the old law.
Thats what Jeremiah was saying
Now Jeremiah wrote that and then another prophet named Ezekiel who was actually someone who went into slavery when the Baylonians ransacked Jerusalem said this:
Ezekiel
Im telling you this is New Testament theology nobody in the Ot had the Spirit of God in them the Spirit of God came on people but never in them.
So He is proclaiming this New Covenant where god is going to put His very own Spirit within people.
Thats exactly what Jesus was giving.
New Wine a new heart, a new Spirit, a New Covenant with God.
Not based on legalism or law, but on grace.
Not based on ritual or tradition but based on a personal intimate relationship with God Himself.
Jesus was bringin New wine He was bringing New life and they had never seen it before.
This NEw Wine is what grabbed my heart in the summer of 05.
I was 21 years old knee deep in alcaholism, drugs and immorality, and I hated church, I didnt want anything to do wit it.
But God wasn trying to get me to attend church He was trying to give me New Life, and after that New Life was put in me I realized that I loved church I wanted to be there everytime the word was opened.
He put a NEw SPirit within me not a SPirit of drunkenness but one of a sound mind.
He put a new song in my heart and a new freedom in my soul and my life has never been the same since.
What kind of wine skin are you?
Are you an old wineskin full of religion that God cant put that new wine into because you got so many rules and preconcieved ideas about how church should be and how God should be that you cant even experience grace?
Or are you a New Wine Skin that He He can pour out HIs SPirit into and work through in mighty and miraculous ways?
If God wanted to come into this room tonight and do something fresh, would your heart be a fit vessel for His work?
If JEsus was to pour that New Wine into you, the Bible says you would be a New creation, old things would pass away new things would come.
Hey the last thing anyone needs to tell you to do is just dont sin, you been sinning a long time.
You know how I know that?
You a human being.
But God can put New Wine into you where He will come and change you desires.
Wouldnt you love to have a new beginning, arent you sick and tired of being sick and tired?
Arent you tired of trying to make it through life on your own?
Jesus has new wine!
He wants to put it into a new wineskin.
Old Wineskins Cannot Handle New Wine
Jesus said those rigid hardened wineskins, they are like you you religious people who dont know me and dont love me.
You are rigid, you dont know me and you are not flexible to hear the truth of God.
you cant handle the new wine whenever I try to pour it into you it just burst, you already have your mind made up, your so formal.
