Introduction:
The story of the children of Israel often serves as a framework for Christians and members of the New Testament church.
Many lessons can be learned by looking at the examples of those who walked by faith and obeyed God.
Even the instructions that they followed, we can see their faithfulness and obedience and we can resolve to model ourselves after their obedience.
The book of Exodus gives us an example of God’s workings with the children of Israel that we need to examine more closely.
Grace of Covenant & Presence
God graciously delivered the Israelites from the Egyptians and their pharaoh
They came to Sinai, where God made them His people -
He made a covenant with them and the people ratified the covenant, agreeing to obey the words of God -
Then the Lord told Moses to take up a collection of all sorts of materials in order that the people could construct a tabernacle/sanctuary for God to dwell with the people -
The people had been delivered by God’s divine power
God showed grace, mercy, love, and faithfulness to the Israelites by entering into a covenant with them above all other nations
Now, the people will be blessed to have God’s presence with them
These actions demonstrate God’s grace!
Pattern for God’s Presence
God’s presence in the book of Exodus is exciting, but also dangerous.
When God was on Sinai, the people and animals were told to not touch the mountain -
Thunder, lightning, clouds of smoke all point to the presence of God -
Think of God’s presence as a high voltage wire that is live—don’t touch!
Don’t treat God lightly; give Him reverence and awe -
Violators would be punished!
God gives a pattern for what He wants to be built and the specifications for how it should be built - ,
Ark of the covenant -
Curtains -
Veil -
Specifications on administering sacrifices -
God gives a pattern and He cares about the details!
Building a new church building, builders had to build according to a pattern/blueprint.
It had to be to scale and specifications for city and state code.
If we don’t build according to the pattern/blueprint then it would turn out improperly.
A Pattern for the New Covenant
The old covenant has passed away and there is a new covenant through the blood of Jesus Christ -
Just as there was a pattern for the old covenant people of Israel to follow, we have a pattern we must follow -
The church is the temple of God -
God’s spirit dwells with us -
A pattern for becoming a child of God -
“For all of you who were baptized...” — this excludes anyone who has not been baptized.
Anyone who has not been baptized is not a child of God.
Conversions in ,000; Samaritans; Simon the sorcerer; Ethiopian eunuch; Saul of Tarsus; Cornelius; Lydia; Philippian jailer; Corinthians; Epheisans
Repetition of baptism in all of these cases reveals a pattern for becoming a child of God.
A pattern for benevolence - ;
Churches of Galatia and Corinth were given the same pattern and commandment -
Collection is for the saints -
First day of the week collection -
Individual giving based upon earnings -
Repeated pattern with the church in Antioch -
Disciples gave in proportion to what they had
The church sent benevolent aid for the relief of fellow Christians in Jerusalem.
Funds were given to the elders and they oversaw the distribution -
Benevolence is a work of the church:
Churches take a collection
Churches may send to other Christians, or churches
Churches did not send to another organization to do its work (orphan’s home)
A pattern for evangelism - ;
Antioch sent preachers to proclaim the gospel of Christ.
They did not send their money to a missionary society that then determined who to send or where to send them.
Antioch did not send their money to another church with their elders to oversee the work of evangelism.
Antioch took charge and they sent preachers they had among them without the use of an unscriptural/non-patterned cooperation of churches, or missionary society.
A pattern for edification - ; ;
Edification is the work of worship, teaching, and emphasis on spiritual growth.
Edification and fellowship is an integral part of the work of the church!
However, it is done through teaching, not by turning to the social gospel, entertainment, and church provided/funded food.
The congregation has no authority to provide a room, building, or hall (fellowship hall or family life center) for the social purposes.
Christians are to associate with one another, but they are to do that as the work of individuals -
Covenant, Presence, and Pattern
Recognizing the church as the covenant people of God—we are only the people of God by grace!
To remain firmly grounded and committed to the pattern is to take God seriously.
Remember God is like a high voltage wire.
Even in the New Testament, He struck Annanias and Sapphira dead for lying.
We must give God reverence and awe -
Looking for the pattern is not legalistic.
It’s faithfulness to a faithful and gracious God!
If we turn from the pattern, then we will not have God continually dwell with us.
God’s spirit left the temple -
Israel had been destroyed by Assyria.
Now, Judah had turned to idolatry and been unfaithful to God and His covenant.
Christ will remove our candle stick -
God will remain and abide with us when we remain committed to obeying His covenant, recognizing His authority, and doing what He says.
Conclusion:
We must do all things according to God’s pattern for the church—evangelism, benevolence, and edification.
We must recognize the pattern for salvation—baptism into Christ makes a person a child of God.
To acknowledge and follow the pattern is not legalism—it’s faithfulness!
Will you be faithful to God today?
