Explanation: Jesus is winding up His discourse to the unbelieving Jews. In His summary, He lays out the overwhelming support for His claims of being the Messiah. While His testimony to Himself is valid in and of itself, He references the OT law that establishes validity on the basis of 2 to 3 witnesses
The first witness Jesus calls is that of John the Baptist. These Jews were the very ones who sent a delegation to John to find out who he was and why he was baptizing. Jesus reminds them that they were even pleased with John because John was the first prophetic voice in over 400 years. These Jews were okay with John’s message until he started dealing with the need to repent.
Illustrate: Parents who are okay with a teacher until the teacher begins to share about their child’s constant misbehavior
Argument: People will sit and listen and go along until the situation or teaching involves their specific situation and the corresponding need to repent. [One situation that repeatedly arises in the church is being in a relationship with another person while still married.] Paul warned Timothy in this area and told him to preach the Word. This is one reason why churches that soft-pedal the Gospel and accommodate sin are full of people.
preach the word; be ready in season and out of season; reprove, rebuke, and exhort, with complete patience and teaching. For the time is coming when people will not endure sound teaching, but having itching ears they will accumulate for themselves teachers to suit their own passions, and will turn away from listening to the truth and wander off into myths.

Application: When the Spirit sends a word of Repentance your way, don’t get mad at the messenger and don’t reject the message. It is for your benefit

Explanation: It is helpful to remember this entire account (chapter 5) started with Jesus healing a man on the Sabbath. Even though Jesus was doing a very good thing (healing a lame man) and was performing the healing supernaturally (a work of God), the Jews were upset because Jesus was breaking one of their made up rules. They missed out on the main thing because they were selfishly focused on their very minor thing
Illustrate: sit in someone’s spot and he or she will lose focus for the entire service. Service at Oakbrook when we moved the offering to the end of the service: awkward!!
Argument: Even though it has been said many times, it still bears repeating: It is not about us! It is all about Him!! As the Sovereign Creator God of the Universe, He has the right to interrupt our lives at His choosing
Application: Reflect on your habits and practices, especially in the spiritual arena. Are you submitting to the discipline of the Word? Are you actually willing to follow the Spirit of God, regardless of consequences? If the answer is no, what is it about your personal agenda that is more important than God’s?

Explanation: The Jewish leaders were the epitome of religiosity. They wore the right clothes, greeted others of appropriate station in the market place, gave linguistically appealing prayers, and made sure their financial giving in the synagogue was noticed by others. These guys had it going on! At least, that’s what they thought. They claimed to be God’s “A” Team, but they missed out on what God was revealing to them
Argument: The Jews were practicing an outer form of godliness () which bedazzled the peasants, but did not fool God for even 1 second! There are always that group of people who try to look spiritual when they aren’t. Jesus called them out as hypocrites in (honor Me with the lips, but the heart is far from Me)
Application: We are told in Scripture to “work out our salvation in fear and trembling” (). This doesn’t mean we can save ourselves. Rather, it is a command to ensure that we are saved through the examination of our actions and motives.

Explanation: As a group, Jewish people are inclined to be very familiar with the OT Scriptures, and this group of Jews were very motivated to study and know the Scriptures. Jesus acknowledges their studious approach, but He chastises them for missing the main message.
Argument: While the accounts of the OT are true, while the history revealed is accurate, and the cities and places are real, the main message of the OT is Preparation for the Messiah! And these Jews missed the point because they refused to accept the very Messiah that their Scriptures pointed.
Application: When in the Word, look for Jesus. Yes, it is good to know the history and background, but don’t miss Jesus in His book!
