The Message Chapter 1

The birth of Jesus took place like this. His mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph. Before they came to the marriage bed, Joseph discovered she was pregnant. (It was by the Holy Spirit, but he didn’t know that.) Joseph, chagrined but noble, determined to take care of things quietly so Mary would not be disgraced.

20–23  While he was trying to figure a way out, he had a dream. God’s angel spoke in the dream: “Joseph, son of David, don’t hesitate to get married. Mary’s pregnancy is Spirit-conceived. God’s Holy Spirit has made her pregnant. She will bring a son to birth, and when she does, you, Joseph, will name him Jesus—‘God saves’—because he will save his people from their sins.” This would bring the prophet’s embryonic sermon to full term:

Watch for this—a virgin will get pregnant and bear a son;

They will name him Immanuel (Hebrew for “God is with us”).

24–25  Then Joseph woke up. He did exactly what God’s angel commanded in the dream: He married Mary. But he did not consummate the marriage until she had the baby. He named the baby Jesus.

Introduction

Introduction

On August 26, 1989, Savitri Lovette Burns married Timothy James Brown. We were having a blast! We went anywhere and everywhere we wanted. We visited who we wanted. We ate anywhere we wanted. In fact, if we had a notion to go get something to eat at 12 midnight— we could, and did! If we decided we wanted to go see a movie at 10 p.m.— we did! However, 4 years, 2 months, & 28 days later, a bouncing baby boy CHANGED EVERYTHING!
Have you had plans for one thing and some thing else tried to dissuade you otherwise? It is possible for God to have a plan and purpose for your life and the enemy or even others will try to get you off course. We have to understand that WHAT GOD HAS FOR ME, IT IS FOR ME! NO MATTER WHAT!!!
In this message today, we learn about a BABY THAT CHANGED EVERYTHING! We revisit the birth of Jesus. It’s an age-old story, but it is refreshing every time.
The writer of Matthew wants the reader to see the birth of the Messiah from the standpoint of Joseph, and not necessarily Mary.
The purpose of the message today is for us to leave with a renewed conviction that wherever God has us, it is for His glory and our good!

I. Mary’s Situation (18)

Mary’s Situation

“His mother, Mother, Mary, was engaged to be married to Joseph.” (a betrothal)
Mary was pregnant before the consummation.
This was a major situation.
Mary didn’t ask for this. It was given her. She was chosen for this. God, at times, chooses us for situations that we don’t ask for!
Her husband to be discovered she was pregnant.

II. Joseph’s Consideration (19)

He was “chagrined” meaning he was ASHAMED, MORTIFIED, CRUSHED, DISCONCERTED, AND DISCOMPOSED
Why? Because he was Jew and he had the option to divorce her publicly or privately...

III. God’s Intervention (20-23)

God will step in! And, He will step in ON TIME!
20-He fell off to sleep just in time…while he was trying to figure it out...
20-fear not!
21-purpose of the child
22-23-prophecy to be fulfilled
23-

IV. Joseph’s New Direction (24-25)

24-Joseph woke up! There comes a time that you gotta wake up!
24-25 -Joseph obeyed!
25- Joseph Adopted Jesus & Jesus Adopted Joseph
