The birth of a long-expected child is cause for great joy. Examples:
Couples struggling with infertility.
Royal households waiting for a royal successor.
Families waiting for a son to carry on the family name.
In the same way people in the ancient biblical world experienced great joy at the arrival of a new child.
Let us not forget that medical care was extremely primitive.
The maternal death rate was extremely high. Many woman would die during labor (e.g., Rachel died during the birth of Ben Oni and Benjamin).
We have now come to the long awaited chapter 4:13-22 where we see the birth of Obed, Naomi and Boaz’s son. Today we will share in their joy of a newborn son and consider:
The Lord grants a child
Naomi gains a son
Obed’s genealogy points to a future son
I. The Lord grants a child
I. The Lord grants a child
I. El Señor concede un hijo
I. El Señor concede un hijo
Boaz and Ruth have finally married. They have been joined in marriage before the eyes of God. The narrator now describes the moment we have all been waiting for.
So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife. When he made love to her, the Lord enabled her to conceive, and she gave birth to a son.
Notice how the narrator tells us that after they had been married, the Lord himself allows Ruth to conceive and bare a child.
This is testimony that it is the Lord’s work, the Lord’s doing, that Ruth has conceived and born a child.
The Lord has granted a child. The Lord has opened her womb and allowed for a baby to be conceived.
This should remind us that all conception is a work of God. He allows for the conception of each life in its mother’s womb.
A life has been formed in the Ruth’s womb. This is a human being that the Lord has formed.
The child that has been conceived will be a special child for no one expected him to be born.
No one expected for Naomi to return from Moab.
No one expected that Naomi would return with Ruth to Bethlehem.
No one expected that Ruth would one day be out gleaning in the fields and catch the attention of Boaz.
No one expected that Boaz would fall in love with Ruth - and certainly no one expected that he would be a guardian redeemer that could redeem Naomi and Ruth out of their miserable state.
No one expected that the other guardian redeemer would refuse to marry Ruth.
None of this was expected - which makes the birth of this child that much more special!
II. Naomi gains a son

II. Noemí recibe un hijo
II. Noemí recibe un hijo
The baby has been born and the townswoman gather around Naomi to praise God for his wonderful works!
The women said to Naomi: “Praise be to the Lord, who this day has not left you without a guardian-redeemer. May he become famous throughout Israel! He will renew your life and sustain you in your old age. For your daughter-in-law, who loves you and who is better to you than seven sons, has given him birth.”
Ruth
At the sight of they cry out in praise for the child - Blessed be the Lord!
Ruth 13:14-15
All praise and glory goes to the Lord for it is he who grants conception.
All praise and glory goes to the Lord for it is he who put orchestrated all these events that would culminate this day.
They cry out that the child’d name would be renowned in Israel. He will not be an ordinary child. He will be someone very special.
They pray that he be the one that will restore Naomi in her old age. He will be her caretaker when she is no longer able to care for herself.
Although her husband is dead, although her two boys are now dead, God spared her by giving her a daughter in law that would be faithful to her and to the God of Israel.
Although she had returned to Israel empty handed God has now filled her hands!
They recognize how the key to Naomi’s blessing has been above all God - and Ruth. They recognize her value more than that of seven sons.
Naomi could not have had a more ideal daughter in law.
Naomi could not see the blessing that was standing beside her while she was suffering in Moab and determined to return to Israel.
Surely, Naomi could reflect upon all her suffering and see it all fade into the past as now her day of blessing had come! No previous suffering could compare to the joy of her present blessing.
Naomi takes the child in her hands!
Then Naomi took the child in her arms and cared for him. The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
Naomi takes the child in her hands and the woman cry out: “A son has been born to Naomi”.
We know it was not her son, but it was a way of the woman recognizing how God did not leave Naomi without a descendant that would care after her.
Her hands were no longer empty. She had in her hands the fulfillment of God’s ultimate blessing for her life.
The woman cry out with the baby’s name: Obed. Obed means: to serve.
This name was most appropriate for he would serve Naomi.
He would care for his grandmother.
She no longer had to fear starvation of poverty for God had provided her a grandson that would serve her in her old age.
God had provided a redeemer through Boaz and her grandson Obed.

III.
What was so special about this child?
The women living there said, “Naomi has a son!” And they named him Obed. He was the father of Jesse, the father of David.
This child - Obed - would be the father of the Israel’s greatest king - king David!
This child would be a direct ancestor of the great king David - the king who was according to God’s own heart.
Therefore, this child was no ordinary child.
give us even greater detail about the royal lineage. This genealogy is of utmost importance for it teaches us wonderful truths about God’s plan in history.
This, then, is the family line of Perez:
Perez was the father of Hezron,
Hezron the father of Ram,
Ram the father of Amminadab,
Amminadab the father of Nahshon,
Nahshon the father of Salmon,
Salmon the father of Boaz,
Boaz the father of Obed,
Obed the father of Jesse,
and Jesse the father of David.
Fares fue el padre de Jezrón;
Jezrón, el padre de Ram;
Ram, el padre de Aminadab;
Aminadab, el padre de Naasón;
Naasón, el padre de Salmón;
Salmón, el padre de Booz;
Booz, el padre de Obed;
Obed, el padre de Isaí;
e Isaí, el padre de David.
The first truth we learn is how God takes ordinary people to bring about his purposes.
God determined in his eternal decree
Who would have known that a woman such as Ruth the moabite would be a direct descendant of the great king David.
The second truth we learn is that the people of God are full of people with less than respectable histories
In this lineage we see the family line of Perez. Perez was the son of Tamar and Judah. Tamar had become a widow. Her father in law had practically forgotten about her. So one day, she dresses up as a prostitute and encounters Judah. Perez was born as a result.
In verse 20 we encounter a man named Salmon. He was Boaz’s father. However, in this verse we are not told who his mother was. We find out about his mother elsewhere in scripture.
This genealogy is pretty much identical to the one found in .
Matthew 1
Salmon the father of Boaz, whose mother was Rahab,
Boaz the father of Obed, whose mother was Ruth,
Obed the father of Jesse,
Salmón, padre de Booz, cuya madre fue Rajab;
Booz, padre de Obed, cuya madre fue Rut;
Obed, padre de Isaí;
We may not know who Salmon was…but we sure remember who Rahab was. She was the prostitute that was living in Jericho when the Israelite spies had gone in to spy on the land.
Rahab had encountered the Israelite spies and helped hide them in her home. She pleaded that she and her family would be spared from the destruction that would come.
So…the great Boaz, the guardian redeemer, the man who saved Naomi and Ruth…his mother was had been a prostitute in Jericho.
Finally in verse 16 and verse 22 we encounter David. Obed was king David’s grandfather.
Although we remember many great things about the great king David we should never forget that he was a man that sinned greatly before God. He was:
Guilty of adultery with Bathsheba.
Guilty of arranging the murder of Bathsheba’s husband.
Guilty of not leading his family well such that there was utter chaos within the royal family.
God had taken imperfect people to accomplish his purposes. None of them were perfect.
Nevertheless God had a plan to carry out in their lives to demonstrate that it was not their moral character or obedience that would accomplish God’s will but rather God’s mercy and grace in their lives.
This genealogy ultimate points to the great redeemer that would come many years later to save his people from their sins.
If we return to we realize this geneology is part of our Lord Jesus’ geneology.
This is the genealogy of Jesus the Messiah the son of David, the son of Abraham:
Tabla genealógica de Jesucristo, hijo de David, hijo de Abraham:
Ultimately, God was accomplishing his eternal plan of redemption through the lives of these imperfect people.
Poor, miserable, wretched sinners, were being used to bring about the birth of the savior of the world.
Jesus Christ would be born of a virgin, not simply to lift us out of poverty, but to lift us out of our state or rebellion and condemnation before God.
It would be through Jesus Christ, his life, death, and resurrection, that we would be redeemed from our sin, from our old way of living, to experience life and life everlasting.
We bow down before him
