Who are you? Who do you belong too? Who are your parents?
Who are you? Who do you belong too? Who are your parents?
When someone ask you this question, what is your response?
When someone ask you this question, what is your response?
When we look at these few passages we see three things that describe who we are in Christ.
We are debtors in Christ.
So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh. For if you live according to the flesh you will die, but if by the Spirit you put to death the deeds of the body, you will live.
So then, brothers, we are debtors, not to the flesh, to live according to the flesh.
Romans 8:12-
When we accept Christ as Lord and Savior we understand that He bought us with a price.
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
Galatians 3:
Christ redeemed us from the curse of the law by becoming a curse for us—for it is written, “Cursed is everyone who is hanged on a tree”— so that in Christ Jesus the blessing of Abraham might come to the Gentiles, so that we might receive the promised Spirit through faith.
To give a human example, brothers: even with a man-made covenant, no one annuls it or adds to it once it has been ratified.
Church we must understand that if we have accepted Jesus as Lord and Savior then we no longer live by the flesh (things of this world). But we live to do the work that the Spirit has placed upon us.
We are no longer able to do what we please because we are not our own. We were bought and must do what we are commanded to do through Christ.
Second, we are sons/daughters of Christ
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!”
For all who are led by the Spirit of God are sons of God. For you did not receive the spirit of slavery to fall back into fear, but you have received the Spirit of adoption as sons, by whom we cry, “Abba! Father!” The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
For I consider that the sufferings of this present time are not worth comparing with the glory that is to be revealed to us. For the creation waits with eager longing for the revealing of the sons of God. For the creation was subjected to futility, not willingly, but because of him who subjected it, in hope that the creation itself will be set free from its bondage to corruption and obtain the freedom of the glory of the children of God. For we know that the whole creation has been groaning together in the pains of childbirth until now. And not only the creation, but we ourselves, who have the firstfruits of the Spirit, groan inwardly as we wait eagerly for adoption as sons, the redemption of our bodies. For in this hope we were saved. Now hope that is seen is not hope. For who hopes for what he sees? But if we hope for what we do not see, we wait for it with patience.
Our debt/slavery is not of fear but of love.
for God gave us a spirit not of fear but of power and love and self-control.
I love this image, because we see the relational side of God. He (chose) you to be apart of the family through what Christ done.
Romans 8:1
He adopted us. Which means He took us when He didn’t have too.
Share story of our girls.
We call out to Him as Father. One who we see as someone that provides, nurtures, cares for their child.
Third, we are heirs with Christ
The Spirit himself bears witness with our spirit that we are children of God, and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
Romans 8:
Because we are apart of “the family” we have an inheritance through Christ.
Wither we are born or adopted into a family, we are apart of the family, and when one or both of our parents die we take the rights to what they have.
Verse 17 shares that we are able to partake, when we suffer with Him.
and if children, then heirs—heirs of God and fellow heirs with Christ, provided we suffer with him in order that we may also be glorified with him.
We must be willing to hold strong to who we are in Christ, proclaim the name even when it is not popular to do so. We must be willing to lose all in this world in order to gain what is promised in Christ.
Are you apart of the family? Do you know who you are?
ADVENT- FIRST SUNDAY
Book of Common Prayers
Read if time to show praise
Praise the Lord!
Praise the Lord, O my soul!
I will praise the Lord as long as I live;
I will sing praises to my God while I have my being.
Put not your trust in princes,
in a son of man, in whom there is no salvation.
When his breath departs, he returns to the earth;
on that very day his plans perish.
Blessed is he whose help is the God of Jacob,
whose hope is in the Lord his God,
who made heaven and earth,
the sea, and all that is in them,
who keeps faith forever;
who executes justice for the oppressed,
who gives food to the hungry.
The Lord sets the prisoners free;
the Lord opens the eyes of the blind.
The Lord lifts up those who are bowed down;
the Lord loves the righteous.
The Lord watches over the sojourners;
he upholds the widow and the fatherless,
but the way of the wicked he brings to ruin.
The Lord will reign forever,
your God, O Zion, to all generations.
Praise the Lord!
