Transition: Our God of Compassion & Comfort
Transition: Our God of Compassion & Comfort
As a time of reflection, contemplation, and consideration of how we ought to serve our compassionate God
Jesus provides total fulfillment (satisfaction)
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
The LORD, our God, calls his spokespersons to comfort
Comfort, comfort my people, says your God. Speak tenderly to Jerusalem, and cry to her that her warfare is ended, that her iniquity is pardoned, that she has received from the Lord’s hand double for all her sins. A voice cries: “In the wilderness prepare the way of the Lord; make straight in the desert a highway for our God.
Isaiah 40:10
Our LORD Jesus Christ calls us to provide comfort to others- a comfort that is the same that our God and Father has provided us
Blessed be the God and Father of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of mercies and God of all comfort, who comforts us in all our affliction, so that we may be able to comfort those who are in any affliction, with the comfort with which we ourselves are comforted by God. For as we share abundantly in Christ’s sufferings, so through Christ we share abundantly in comfort too. If we are afflicted, it is for your comfort and salvation; and if we are comforted, it is for your comfort, which you experience when you patiently endure the same sufferings that we suffer. Our hope for you is unshaken, for we know that as you share in our sufferings, you will also share in our comfort. For we do not want you to be unaware, brothers, of the affliction we experienced in Asia. For we were so utterly burdened beyond our strength that we despaired of life itself.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.

And today’s scripture providing a practical illustration of the physical and spiritual need of all of humanity
John 10:
Comprehends The Demands Of Ministry
Jesus knows that serving God’s people can be demanding, difficult, and dangerous at times
(Not only is Jesus the Good Shepherd to those who seek him, he is also the Good Shepherd of His undershepherds)
From Just Followers
And Jesus said to them, “Follow me, and I will make you become fishers of men.”
To Followers who went out
Mark
So they went out and proclaimed that people should repent. And they cast out many demons and anointed with oil many who were sick and healed them.
Commands His Followers To Rest
(in desolate places with Him)
they have down something to rest about, they were called Disciples in 1:17, now they are called Apostles because they have gone out
Jesus Is The Good Shepherd
Compassion
Shepherd
Rest- Jesus cares for the welfare of his undershepherds
I am the good shepherd. The good shepherd lays down his life for the sheep.
For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints,
But all things should be done decently and in order.
Cares For The Lost Sheep
Hosea 4:6-8
My people are destroyed for lack of knowledge; because you have rejected knowledge, I reject you from being a priest to me. And since you have forgotten the law of your God, I also will forget your children. The more they increased, the more they sinned against me; I will change their glory into shame. They feed on the sin of my people; they are greedy for their iniquity.
So they were scattered, because there was no shepherd, and they became food for all the wild beasts. My sheep were scattered;
As a shepherd seeks out his flock when he is among his sheep that have been scattered, so will I seek out my sheep, and I will rescue them from all places where they have been scattered on a day of clouds and thick darkness.
For the shepherds are stupid and do not inquire of the Lord; therefore they have not prospered, and all their flock is scattered.
Jeremiah
“Woe to the shepherds who destroy and scatter the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord.
“My people have been lost sheep. Their shepherds have led them astray, turning them away on the mountains. From mountain to hill they have gone. They have forgotten their fold.
Jeremeiah 50:6
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He makes me lie down in green pastures. He leads me beside still waters. He restores my soul. He leads me in paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Even though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil, for you are with me; your rod and your staff, they comfort me. You prepare a table before me in the presence of my enemies; you anoint my head with oil; my cup overflows. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life, and I shall dwell in the house of the Lord forever.
“Blessed are those who hunger and thirst for righteousness, for they shall be satisfied.
Challenges His Followers To Care (For The Lost Sheep)
The Disciples See The Problem
But The Disciples Do Not See The Solution right in their midst
What do you have?
Go and see!
Be faithful and Jesus will provide!
But he answered them, “You give them something to eat.” And they said to him, “Shall we go and buy two hundred denarii worth of bread and give it to them to eat?” And he said to them, “How many loaves do you have? Go and see.” And when they had found out, they said, “Five, and two fish.”
Caters Abundant Living
For God is not a God of confusion but of peace. As in all the churches of the saints, the women should keep silent in the churches. For they are not permitted to speak, but should be in submission, as the Law also says. If there is anything they desire to learn, let them ask their husbands at home. For it is shameful for a woman to speak in church. Or was it from you that the word of God came? Or are you the only ones it has reached? If anyone thinks that he is a prophet, or spiritual, he should acknowledge that the things I am writing to you are a command of the Lord. If anyone does not recognize this, he is not recognized. So, my brothers, earnestly desire to prophesy, and do not forbid speaking in tongues. But all things should be done decently and in order.

The Disciples See The Problem
But The Disciples Do Not See The Solution
abundant = pertaining to a quantity so abundant as to be considerably more than what one would expect or anticipate- that which is more than, more than enough, beyond the norm, abundantly, superfluous
So Jesus again said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, I am the door of the sheep. All who came before me are thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them. I am the door. If anyone enters by me, he will be saved and will go in and out and find pasture. The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy. I came that they may have life and have it abundantly.
Now to him who is able to do far more abundantly than all that we ask or think, according to the power at work within us, to him be glory in the church and in Christ Jesus throughout all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Illustration: William Booth could not sleep one evening, so he went for a walk in the night. He walked down to the poor side of London and there, in the cover of darkness, saw the impoverished and beaten half-lives that existed in that setting. The rain was beating down on some of London’s derelicts who were sleeping near the curbsides. When Booth returned home, he told his wife, “I’ve been to hell.” Ot of that nightmarish experience came the dream of the Salvation Army.
Had Booth not left the security of his home, he might never have become aware of the needs of the homeless masses.
We have a compassionate heavenly Father who casts out none who come to Jesus

She was the first American woman appointed to a major ambassadorial post abroad. A versatile author, she is best known for her 1936 hit play The Women, which had an all-female cast. Her writings extended from drama and screen scenarios to fiction, journalism and war reportage. She was the wife of Henry Luce, publisher of Time, Life, Fortune, and Sports Illustrated.
But of all that Clare Boothe Luce did or achieved in life, what left the most indelible mark on her life was when she, at the age of seventy-five years old, was asked, “Do yo have any regrets?” she answered: “Yes, I should have been a better person. Kinder. More tolerant. Sometimes I wake up in the middle of the night, and I remember a girlhood friend of mine who had a brain tumor and called me three times to come and see her. I was always too busy, and when she died, I was profoundly ashamed. I still remember that after fifty-six years.”
When they had finished breakfast, Jesus said to Simon Peter, “Simon, son of John, do you love me more than these?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Feed my lambs.” He said to him a second time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” He said to him, “Yes, Lord; you know that I love you.” He said to him, “Tend my sheep.” He said to him the third time, “Simon, son of John, do you love me?” Peter was grieved because he said to him the third time, “Do you love me?” and he said to him, “Lord, you know everything; you know that I love you.” Jesus said to him, “Feed my sheep.
But The Disciples Do Not See The Solution
Jesus calls his disciples to show compassion
Because, Jesus, who is God, shows compassion
And Communion (The LORD’s Supper)
And Communion (The LORD’s Supper)
can also be a time of reflection
contemplation,
and consideration
of how we ought to serve our compassionate God
Because Jesus provides total fulfillment (satisfaction)
Can I get a witness!
Jesus Is The Bread Of Life
Jesus Is The Bread Of Life
When we read this message again, but in the Gospel according to John account
Jesus said, “Have the people sit down.” Now there was much grass in the place. So the men sat down, about five thousand in number.
John 6:
Other boats from Tiberias came near the place where they had eaten the bread after the Lord had given thanks.
We may have the honor, privilege, and blessing of serving the bread (manna) just like Moses,
but it is our Father who is in heaven, who gives you the true bread from heaven
Therefore, every chance we get,
Every First Sunday Sitting Down to Share Together in the LORD’s Supper
Every First Sunday Sitting Down to Share Together in the LORD’s Supper
Celebrating the LORD’s supper every Sunday
we who believe in Jesus Christ,
ought to thank our heavenly father
Do not forget that it was Jesus who:

who provided the bread of God who is Jesus who came down from heaven and gives life to the world
Our fathers ate the manna in the wilderness; as it is written, ‘He gave them bread from heaven to eat.’ ” Jesus then said to them, “Truly, truly, I say to you, it was not Moses who gave you the bread from heaven, but my Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is he who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.” They said to him, “Sir, give us this bread always.” Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives me will come to me, and whoever comes to me I will never cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do my own will but the will of him who sent me. And this is the will of him who sent me, that I should lose nothing of all that he has given me, but raise it up on the last day. For this is the will of my Father, that everyone who looks on the Son and believes in him should have eternal life, and I will raise him up on the last day.”

Post-lude: Reliving the feeding narrative every first Sunday
And as they were eating, he took bread, and after blessing it broke it and gave it to them, and said, “Take; this is my body.”
And taking the five loaves and the two fish, he looked up to heaven and said a blessing and broke the loaves and gave them to the disciples to set before the people. And he divided the two fish among them all.
Mark 6:41
2 Corinthians 5
All this is from God, who through Christ reconciled us to himself and gave us the ministry of reconciliation; that is, in Christ God was reconciling the world to himself, not counting their trespasses against them, and entrusting to us the message of reconciliation.
Now I am preaching to myself!
I’ve preached myself happy!
I know I ought to sit down!
But like Jeremiah said: it’s like fire shut up in my bones!
He looked beyond my faults and saw my need.
Therefore

And we ought to take every opportunity, we are afforded
to serve the bread of life to our friends, family, neighbors, acquaintances, co-workers, supervisors, and all who are sheep without a shepherd i.e. wandering around in the wilderness of life, lost, without Jesus Christ who is the Good Shepherd
