THOUGHTS: Jesus was revealed but not in a way that was evident for everyone. Jesus came on a rescue mission. Some recongized him. Others did. Will we?
John 7:25 NRSV
Now some of the people of Jerusalem were saying, “Is not this the man whom they are trying to kill?
Jesus speakingAuthorities Not doing Anything
Just a few verses ago people thought Jesus was delirious becuase he said they were trying to kill him. Seems at like some, at least, know about the plot to kill Jesus.
John 7:26 NRSV
And here he is, speaking openly, but they say nothing to him! Can it be that the authorities really know that this is the Messiah?
However, Jesus is teaching and the authorities aren’t coming to arrest him or anything. They are wondering if the Jewish authorities really knew that Jesus was the Messiah and that is why they were leaving him alone.
Authorities have more infoThey believe he’s the messiah
John 7:27 NRSV
Yet we know where this man is from; but when the Messiah comes, no one will know where he is from.”
Yet, there was an issue with Jesus. There were different beliefs surrounded the Mssian. Many believed that the Missiah would simply appear and, perhaps, even the Messiah wouldn’t know that he was the Messiah until he appeard.
They know where Jesus is from! They know his parents. They know where he lives. Or at least they think they do.
They know where he’s fromThe Messiah just appears
John 7:28 NRSV
Then Jesus cried out as he was teaching in the temple, “You know me, and you know where I am from. I have not come on my own. But the one who sent me is true, and you do not know him.
You do, but you don’t know. Not where I’m from, but Who sent me.
In Greek, Jesus’ response could be written as a question....youknow me and you know where I am from?” Eitehr way, Jesus point is that they really don’t know him…or where he is from…but more importantly THEY don’t know the one who sent him.
John 7:29 NRSV
I know him, because I am from him, and he sent me.”
John 7:30–31 NRSV
Then they tried to arrest him, but no one laid hands on him, because his hour had not yet come. Yet many in the crowd believed in him and were saying, “When the Messiah comes, will he do more signs than this man has done?”
John 7:30-
Tried to arrest him (Who tried??)Others believe (at what level?)
The video has an interesting take on how Jesus didn’t gret arrested. John tells us, however it happened, it was because Jesus’ time had not yet come. By telling us this, John also gives us a clue as to how we will know Jesus’ hour has come.
However, many in the crowd believed in Jesus. Whether their belief was the kind Jesus’ was hoping for we don’t know. What we do know is that Jesus’ was being revealed to the people
Revealed
Through signs,
Jesus is revealed as the Messiah
Jesus reveals that God sent him. He comes on God’s behalf
The birth revealed God was doing a new thing!
Recognized
Even though Jesus is revealed, the question is, is he recognized?
o we recognize Jesus as OUR Messiah? Our king? Our Lord?
Do we recognize Jesus as OUR Messiah? Our king? Our Lord?
The manner of Jesus’ birth caused his true idenntity to be conceled, or at least obscured who he was. He came incognito. However, for those who knew God, they were in on the mission. Jesus was on a rescue mission and those who knew God also knew who Jesus was.
