The broken relationship seen in a concurred land.
The broken relationship seen in a concurred land.
· Verse 1: What represented the contempt from God will reveal the glory of God.
o Galilee of the nations (Gentiles)
§ This name was because it was under authority of Gentile nations
o Zebulun & Naphtali: Northern region that was concurred by Assyria.
o Prophecy that this very place that represent broken relationship will reveal God’s glory.
o “Future – Past tense” – “in latter times He HAS made
o This all represented the broken relationship between God and His people.
§ This land was given to them, but they refused to serve God alone.
§ Our salvation is tied up in this broken relationship.
o “In latter times …” looks forward to God’s solution for their brokenness relationship.
Now when he heard that John had been arrested, he withdrew into Galilee. And leaving Nazareth he went and lived in Capernaum by the sea, in the territory of Zebulun and Naphtali, so that what was spoken by the prophet Isaiah might be fulfilled:
“The land of Zebulun and the land of Naphtali,
the way of the sea, beyond the Jordan, Galilee of the Gentiles—
the people dwelling in darkness
have seen a great light,
and for those dwelling in the region and shadow of death,
on them a light has dawned.”
§ Jesus moves His “home based” to Capernaum in this very region.
A Spiritual Problem
A Spiritual Problem
The people who walked in darkness
have seen a great light;
those who dwelt in a land of deep darkness,
on them has light shone.
· More prophetic language pointing to Jesus as the answer to what Israel is experiencing.
The light shines in the darkness, and the darkness has not overcome it.
Again Jesus spoke to them, saying, “I am the light of the world. Whoever follows me will not walk in darkness, but will have the light of life.”
· Darkness vs. Light
o To the Jewish people this darkness would represent Gentile occupation
o Reminder that darkness indicates sin.
o This is an important distinction for us.
§ We are tempted (as the Jewish people) to see God honor a plot of dirt. God desires a relationship with us.
· He already owns the plot of dirt.
· The plot of dirt isn’t what keeps rebelling against God.
§ We don’t have a real estate problem, we have a sin problem.
The Peace will be on a Godly Scale
The Peace will be on a Godly Scale
You have multiplied the nation;
you have increased its joy;
they rejoice before you
as with joy at the harvest,
as they are glad when they divide the spoil.
o Joy at the harvest…
o Divide the spoil…
For the yoke of his burden,
and the staff for his shoulder,
the rod of his oppressor,
you have broken as on the day of Midian.
o The 3-fold joy
§ The yoke of his burden
§ The staff of for his shoulder
§ The rod of his oppressor
§ Points to the oppression that Jewish people felt during the exile.
§ Same oppression that is felt by sin.
o You have broken as in the days of Median
§ The answer to the sin in the world (Jesus) will obviously be from God.
Gods miracle Gideon vs Median.
The Peace will be Eternal
The Peace will be Eternal
· Verse 5
For every boot of the tramping warrior in battle tumult
and every garment rolled in blood
will be burned as fuel for the fire.
o The items of battle are not going to be “put away”
o They are going to be BURNED as fuel in the fire.
§ They are no longer needed.
§ Because God peace will be eternal.
The Peace will be a Gift from God
The Peace will be a Gift from God
· Verse 6 “for to us a child is born, to us a son is given”
o A Child is born
§ I can understand why Jewish people might have thought the messiah would concur the land.
§ The messiah was not what some might expect.
§ The messiah would come as a child.
o A son is given
John 3:16 give a clear example of what this means.
“For God so loved the world, that he gave his only Son, that whoever believes in him should not perish but have eternal life.
§ Given in love
§ Given to pay a price.
The Prince of Peace
The Prince of Peace
The peace will be a restoration of God’s order.
The wolf shall dwell with the lamb,
and the leopard shall lie down with the young goat,
and the calf and the lion and the fattened calf together;
and a little child shall lead them.
The cow and the bear shall graze;
their young shall lie down together;
and the lion shall eat straw like the ox.
The nursing child shall play over the hole of the cobra,
and the weaned child shall put his hand on the adder’s den.
They shall not hurt or destroy
in all my holy mountain;
for the earth shall be full of the knowledge of the Lord
as the waters cover the sea.
The peace will be for all who call on the name of the Lord.
But God, being rich in mercy, because of the great love with which he loved us,
