The 38th Chapter
The 38th Chapter
About the line of Judah
Incest, deceit, prostitution, manipulation.
God kills two people.
Jerry Springer/Maury
From Jordan to Joseph
From Jordan to Joseph
“I've missed more than 9000 shots in my career. I've lost almost 300 games. 26 times, I've been trusted to take the game winning shot and missed. I've failed over and over and over again in my life. And that is why I succeed.”
― Michael Jordan

Responses to set backs:
Quit
Blame everybody (become a victim) (Fix the problem, not the blame)
Just keep swimming.
When we last saw Joseph, he had been betrayed, thrown in a pit, sold in to slavery and sold to Potiphar (Captain of the guard of Pharoah.)
Joseph had a good work ethic
Joseph had a good work ethic
Genesis 39:2-
2 The Lord was with Joseph, so he became a successful man. And he was in the house of his master, the Egyptian.
3 Now his master saw that the Lord was with him and how the Lord caused all that he did to prosper in his hand.
4 So Joseph found favor in his sight and became his personal servant; and he made him overseer over his house, and all that he owned he put in his charge.
Potiphar’s household prospered.
6 So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate.
Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
Genesis
6 So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate.
Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
God was blessing Joseph, but understand that God wasn’t blessing him in-spite of his actions, but through them.
Joseph wasn’t a token good luck charm. He was working. He had an excellent work ethic. He was trustworthy and reliable.
“Football is a great deal like life in that it teaches that work, sacrifice, perseverance, competitive drive, selflessness and respect for authority is the price that each and every one of us must pay to achieve any goal that is worthwhile.” Vince Lombardi
The dictionary is the only place that success comes before work.
Verse 3 tells us that Potiphar recognized that God caused Joseph to be successful.
God is glorified when we, as followers of Christ, work hard.
The Word tells us to work hard and that we will be rewarded.
4 The soul of the sluggard craves and gets nothing,
But the soul of the diligent is made fat.
Colossians 3:23-
23 Whatever you do, do your work heartily, as for the Lord rather than for men,
24 knowing that from the Lord you will receive the reward of the inheritance. It is the Lord Christ whom you serve.
Joseph had Integrity

6 So he left everything he owned in Joseph’s charge; and with him there he did not concern himself with anything except the food which he ate.
Now Joseph was handsome in form and appearance.
7 It came about after these events that his master’s wife looked with desire at Joseph, and she said, “Lie with me.”
Things were going so well.
He is young, good looking, successful, powerful and now attention.
If he submits, no one would likely ever find out. She would be in as much trouble as he would.
How would you fare in that situation?
Genesis 39:
8 But he refused and said to his master’s wife, “Behold, with me here, my master does not concern himself with anything in the house, and he has put all that he owns in my charge.
9 “There is no one greater in this house than I, and he has withheld nothing from me except you, because you are his wife. How then could I do this great evil and sin against God?”
Sin against God?
Joseph knew before it was written. He is working for God, not Potiphar.
“Real integrity is doing the right thing, knowing that nobody's going to know whether you did it or not.”
Oprah Winfrey

How do we become people of integrity? The answer is in where you put your focus. What do you dwell on?
How can I get more stuff? How can I become famous?
Where is you focus?
Proverbs
25 Let your eyes look directly ahead
And let your gaze be fixed straight in front of you.
26 Watch the path of your feet
And all your ways will be established.
27 Do not turn to the right nor to the left;
Turn your foot from evil.
It reminds me of the hymn that goes:
Turn your eyes upon Jesus,
Look full in His wonderful face,
And the things of earth will grow strangely dim,
In the light of His glory and grace.
Joseph was focused on God, so the temptation of the wife was faded.
She didn’t give up.
Verse 10 tells us that she spoke to him day after day.
Genesis
10 As she spoke to Joseph day after day, he did not listen to her to lie beside her or be with her.
Genesis 39:
11 Now it happened one day that he went into the house to do his work, and none of the men of the household was there inside.
Don’t put yourself in Joseph’s position!
I work with two women.
If you come to my house.
Genesis 39:12
12 She caught him by his garment, saying, “Lie with me!” And he left his garment in her hand and fled, and went outside.
He did what he was supposed to do.
tells us to Flee immorality:
pheugo: flee, run away, escape, disappear quickly.
She devised a plan
Genesis 39:
14 she called to the men of her household and said to them, “See, he has brought in a Hebrew to us to make sport of us; he came in to me to lie with me, and I screamed.
Side Note:
Potiphar and his wife were in a bad marriage: Obviously she is pursuing Joseph.
But I know why:
The only thing he was concerned about in his household was what he ate: Potiphar neglected his wife.
“He has brought that Hebrew.”
She is harboring resentment toward her husband.

Men
18 Let your fountain be blessed,
And rejoice in the wife of your youth.
19 As a loving hind and a graceful doe,
Let her breasts satisfy you at all times;
Be exhilarated always with her love.
Women /men
26 Be angry, and yet do not sin; do not let the sun go down on your anger,
Potiphar’s wife told her husband. “This is what your slave did to me.”
Ephesians 4:

Joseph was perseverant
21 But the Lord was with Joseph and extended kindness to him, and gave him favor in the sight of the chief jailer.
22 The chief jailer committed to Joseph’s charge all the prisoners who were in the jail; so that whatever was done there, he was responsible for it.
23 The chief jailer did not supervise anything under Joseph’s charge because the Lord was with him; and whatever he did, the Lord made to prosper.
Genesis 39:
Josephe endured:
My H.S. football coach use to quote Patton all the time: “Fatigue makes cowards of us all.”
1 Therefore, since we have so great a cloud of witnesses surrounding us, let us also lay aside every encumbrance and the sin which so easily entangles us, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us,
2 fixing our eyes on Jesus, the author and perfecter of faith, who for the joy set before Him endured the cross, despising the shame, and has sat down at the right hand of the throne of God.
3 For consider Him who has endured such hostility by sinners against Himself, so that you will not grow weary and lose heart.
Hebrews
When you are tired, focus on Christ.
