Introduction
Provide examples of exegetical insights for Intermediate Greek class
Various types of insights so students know the kinds of things to look for when they study Scripture
Verbs
Setting the background (aorist and imperfects)
Sometimes a series of verbs will be used to “set the background” for what is to come.
.
Vss 1-2 has four aorist tense verbs.
These four verbs discuss two key things
Jesus’ being taken and scourged
Loss of freedom, beaten
Jesus being clothed with a crown and rob
Kingly status
Being aorist tense (looking at the overall action without focusing on the length of the ordeal or action) these verbs present important issues which simply set the stage for what is to take the emphasis (vs.
3, and then what follows).
Vs. 3: has three imperfect tense verbs showing repeated actions of the three things by the soldiers:
Repeatedly coming up to Jesus (group mentality)
Being bullied
Repeatedly saying, “Hail, king of the Jews”
Repeatedly mocked
Repeatedly slapping him
Repeatedly abused (publically).
Passive voice
σταυρωθῇ APS/3s
Passive: Jesus did not crucify Himself (active voice) nor did He participate in the crucifixion (middle voice).
Instead, He was a victim.
Pluperfect tense
: “standing” Εἱστήκεισαν Plurperfect act indic.
3P
Perfect tense
τετέλεσται Perfect passive indicative 3rd singular
