Tonight we have the chance to start a mini series over the next two Wednesday nights, that we are calling: “Messages about the King.”
Let’s look at the first message from delivered by Simeon
1. Following the Law
1. Following the Law
1. Faithful Man
1. Faithful Man
verses 25-27
How was Simeon described?
a) Just
a) Just
Just
This is another word for “righteous”
Simeon was righteous because of his faith in the Lord.
God made him this way, and when God saw Simeon, He saw one of His children.
b) Devout
b) Devout
This word speaks of him being “committed to religion/relationship with God.”
Here’s a guy that wasn’t going through the motions.
He was faithful to attend church because he had been made right before God through faith.
You know who this sounds like? Many of you!
c) Waiting
c) Waiting
this idea of waiting… look at this definition:
“Continuing to be in a certain state until an expected event… having a desire to see the event occur.”
“Continuing to be in a certain state until an expected event… having a desire to see the event occur.”
This is something I struggle with.
Waiting on the Lord.
I believe that Simeon sets an awesome example for us to be JUST and be DEVOUT, but here’s where we can miss it sometimes.
Waiting.
Looking forward to something. Trusting in God’s provision, plan, and Person.
Waiting is both a desire and a pursuit.
Waiting is both a desire and a pursuit.
Simeon wanted to see this HOPE of Israel, and he waited.
How can we tell that waiting is a desire and a pursuit?
Look at the end of verse 25 - “and the Holy Ghost was upon him.”
verse 26 - “revealed by the Holy Ghost.”
verse 27 - “by the Spirit”
Simeon didn’t take time off from His walk, and he also didn’t make God’s plan revolve around what he wanted.
Think about that: Simeon waited on God to show him what was next, not the other way around.
We do this often, where we have heard what God’s Word said, but we try to make God revolve around our lives.
I did this, and used Scripture to justify it.
Delight thyself also in the Lord;
And he shall give thee the desires of thine heart.
Psalm 34:
“Well i love baseball, and have a desire for it, so God, how about you make me a professional athlete.”
We think God is dependent on us in order for Him to move… no, God can do whatever He wants because He is God!
Commit thy way unto the Lord;
Trust also in him; and he shall bring it to pass.
And he shall bring forth thy righteousness as the light,
And thy judgment as the noonday.
Psalm 37:
Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for him:
Fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way,
Because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass.
Psalm 37:
Whenever I truly began to follow Him, He changed what I wanted into what He wanted for me.
Waiting on God is so important, especially if we are going to be Faithful People.
As this story unfolds, Luke records for us part of this faithful man’s testimony… Now we are going to see what Simeon said about Jesus:
2. Fruitful Message
2. Fruitful Message
verses 28-35
A lot had been said about Jesus at this point, and he was only about a month old.
Gabriel to Mary
You’re going to have the Son of God
Gabriel to Joseph
Mary is pregnant with the Son of God.
Elizabeth
Son the Baptist flipped in the womb.
The Wise Men
Came to worship Jesus as a baby
The Shepherds
and now look at the message that Simeon was preaching:
a) It was Personal
a) It was Personal
“For mine eyes have seen thy salvation...”
I have waited for your promise, and here HE is.
“Which you have prepared before the face of all people...”
God prepared it for everyone.
b) It was Providential
b) It was Providential
“which you have prepared before the face of all people.”
Jesus came for everyone!
c) It was Piercing
c) It was Piercing
I wonder how Mary felt at verse 34-35
(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
And Simeon blessed them, and said unto Mary his mother, Behold, this child is set for the fall and rising again of many in Israel; and for a sign which shall be spoken against; (Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
What did this mean?
Jesus would not be completely accepted by everyone.
There would be some that didn’t accept Jesus.
And whosoever shall fall on this stone shall be broken: but on whomsoever it shall fall, it will grind him to powder.
Unto you therefore which believe he is precious: but unto them which be disobedient, the stone which the builders disallowed, the same is made the head of the corner,
1 Peter 2:7
But we preach Christ crucified, unto the Jews a stumblingblock, and unto the Greeks foolishness; But unto them which are called, both Jews and Greeks, Christ the power of God, and the wisdom of God.
And for you Mary, this won’t be easy.
Now there stood by the cross of Jesus his mother, and his mother’s sister, Mary the wife of Cleophas, and Mary Magdalene.
Message from Anna
Message from Anna
(Yea, a sword shall pierce through thy own soul also,) that the thoughts of many hearts may be revealed.
That phrase that Simeon said to Mary had to have been something she left thinking about.
“is it going to be this tough?”
A sword will pierce your heart. For Mary, what pierced her heart was a dying Jesus. What pierces yours?
What pierces our hearts the most about spiritual things gives us a good idea about where our spiritual walk is.
What pierces our hearts the most about spiritual things gives us a good idea about where our spiritual walk is.
a lot of people get bent out of shape about so many things… what should break our hearts most is lost souls!
another side is the fact that a lot of people are dealing with anxieties and stuff. What is it that you are dealing with?
