Therefore Jesus said again, “I tell you the truth, I am the gate for the sheep.
John 10:7
I tell you the Truth.
Verily, Verily I say unto you.
Amen, Amen lego hymin.
A continuing explanation of the previous passage. The third of 7 of the “I am” statements in John.
Jesus is not the shepherd that goes through the gate, He is the gate.
Gate is translated as DOOR.
Jesus shows HIMSELF as being the protector of the the sheep. He is the way to the fol, with all blessed privileges.
Jesus answered, “I am the way and the truth and the life. No one comes to the Father except through me.
For through him we both have access to the Father by one Spirit.
What does it mean for Jesus to be the DOOR/GATE?
What is the purpose of the DOOR/GATE?
As the SHUT DOOR:
He keeps out thieves and robbers
He has wisdom, power and the goodness to keep out the bad
As the OPEN DOOR:
serves as the passage
serves as the port of communication
Through Him we have access ()
He becomes our Lifestyle
I will strengthen them in the Lord
and in his name they will walk,”
declares the Lord.
Through Him God comes to our church and communicates with us, visits us
The sheep are at last admitted into the heavenly kingdom
“Then the King will say to those on his right, ‘Come, you who are blessed by my Father; take your inheritance, the kingdom prepared for you since the creation of the world.
All who ever came before me were thieves and robbers, but the sheep did not listen to them.
Christ is the DOOR/GATE for all shepherds:
thieves and robbers pretend to be shepherds, the sheep do not hear them
Compare to:
“Woe to the shepherds who are destroying and scattering the sheep of my pasture!” declares the Lord. Therefore this is what the Lord, the God of Israel, says to the shepherds who tend my people: “Because you have scattered my flock and driven them away and have not bestowed care on them, I will bestow punishment on you for the evil you have done,” declares the Lord. “I myself will gather the remnant of my flock out of all the countries where I have driven them and will bring them back to their pasture, where they will be fruitful and increase in number. I will place shepherds over them who will tend them, and they will no longer be afraid or terrified, nor will any be missing,” declares the Lord.
“The days are coming,” declares the Lord,
“when I will raise up to David a righteous Branch,
a King who will reign wisely
and do what is just and right in the land.
In his days Judah will be saved
and Israel will live in safety.
This is the name by which he will be called:
The Lord Our Righteousness.
“So then, the days are coming,” declares the Lord, “when people will no longer say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the Israelites up out of Egypt,’ but they will say, ‘As surely as the Lord lives, who brought the descendants of Israel up out of the land of the north and out of all the countries where he had banished them.’ Then they will live in their own land.”
Jeremiah 23:1-18
also show that the prophets pronounced judgement upon the shepherds of Israel for their failure to care for the sheep in which they were entrusted.
There could also be Messianic pretenders:
For false Christs and false prophets will appear and perform great signs and miracles to deceive even the elect—if that were possible.
Matt
But if we say, ‘From men’….” (They feared the people, for everyone held that John really was a prophet.)
Mark 11:
I am the gate; whoever enters through me will be saved. He will come in and go out, and find pasture.
Not only did the gate provide safety, it provides happiness and freedom
Christ is the mediator between God and man
We enter into covenant with Him and communion
Only those that can enter the kingdom of God can do so through the gate of Christ! And in doing so, we must adhere to His grace and government
On arriving there, they gathered the church together and reported all that God had done through them and how he had opened the door of faith to the Gentiles.
Why is this a big deal? Do you remember the instance of the first gate mentioned in the Bible?
After he drove the man out, he placed on the east side of the Garden of Eden cherubim and a flaming sword flashing back and forth to guard the way to the tree of life.
Genesis 3:24
The first gate in the Bible can be removed because Jesus!
Precious promises of those that enter the gate:
Those that enter are saved hereafter!
This is their home
They are saved from being distrained
They are saved from being impounded by their sin
They are saved from the roaring lion
They are forever Happy (they come and go and find pasture)
They are free to ingress, egress, and regress!
At home with Christ
They have liberty
They have PASTURE: they get support and nourishment; they have the grass in the field and fodder in the fold
The thief comes only to steal and kill and destroy; I have come that they may have life, and have it to the full.
The Shepherd puts Himself in contrast with the sheep
The Jewish leaders are depicted as sheep stealers
The imagery portrays that the sheep are cared for and contented by the Shepherd
Life is preserved and imparted
Not only given eternal life, but have it to the FULL
Now this is eternal life: that they may know you, the only true God, and Jesus Christ, whom you have sent.
The thief comes with ill intent- to steal, kill and destroy
deceivers of souls and murderers of
The Gracious Design of the Shepherd
To provide Life
To provide Abundant Life
more abundant than a life that was lost and forfeited by sin
more abundant than that which was promised by the law of Moses
more abundant than we could expect, ask for or think
Christ came to give life and something more- something better; life with an advantage!
