Relational Evangelism

Intro: Last week the subject of the message was, “bringing someone to Jesus” Bring to the saving grace of Jesus.
There different views of evangelism, how we can share Jesus with the lost.
Skit guys “on evangelism”
The Strategist.
The Amplifed
The lair
The banner man
The Lyriicist
Why is it some important to share bring people to Jesus? Lost people matter to Jesus. So they should matter to us too.
2 Peter 3:9 KJV 1900
9 The Lord is not slack concerning his promise, as some men count slackness; but is longsuffering to us-ward, not willing that any should perish, but that all should come to repentance.
READ VS AND ELAB
There 3 main types of evangelism.
1. Proclamation. Church Service, revival, Billy Graham.....
2. Confrontational: Visitation, door to door, face to face....
3. Relational: Building relationships to bring people to Jesus.

1. Proclamation 2. Confrontational 3. Relational

Proclamtional
a. Very few people can do 1 and 2. But everyone can be involved in relational evangelism.
READ
1. One of the greatest aspect on the gospel stories are the lives that were dramatically changed. The demon possesed man that was healed. The leper that was cleansed, the man the had palsy that took up his bed and walked away. And now a man named Levi (Matthew) whose life would be changed because he obeyed the voice of Jesus.
a. What Matthew did, is what all Christians need to do. Once he became a follower of Jesus, he shared Jesus with his friends.
b. We can do the same, invite someone to church through building relationships with them. But first you must surrender to Him.

I. Surrender to the Jesus as Lord. VS 13-14

Mak
Mark 2:13 KJV 1900
13 And he went forth again by the sea side; and all the multitude resorted unto him, and he taught them.
There were a lot of people following Jesus. Elab the reasons why. But few were willing to surrender to Jesus. To surrender, means putting Him first. For us today, that means being faithful.
a/
a. When the people followed Jesus and he taught them.”He talked about forgiveness, gospel, but He also talked about commitment. He wanted people who were commited to Him, to be His followers.
b. When comes to Jesus, there are fans, and there are followers.
c. Jesus is “by the sea side” Many people are following Him, He is teaching them. HE is still putting together a team.
Mark 2:14 KJV 1900
14 And as he passed by, he saw Levi the son of Alphaeus sitting at the receipt of custom, and said unto him, Follow me. And he arose and followed him.
As Jesus is walking, He comes across a tax collector. (Levi, Matthew)
a. Tax collectors set up along bridges and roads, and collected taxes from merchants traveling by. And also from everyday citizens.
b. Tax collectors were wealthy at the expence of the people. They worked for the Romans and were hated by the Jews. They were corrupt, and were classified with murders and robbers.
a. Since Matthew was always around, he would have heard Jesus preach, he had seen some of His miracles. He may have even known, Peter, Andrew, James and John. He had taken taxes from them.
b. Jesus knows our hearts, He knew the heart of Matthew. Elab
c. Jesus, just as He had called Peter, Andrew, James and John, speaks just 2 two. “Follow me”
d. Elab what he could have done. $$$$
e. So did he follow Jesus?
f. What did it mean for him to follow Jesus? It mean he had to totally surrender to Jesus. He meant he had to give up everything, and never return.
g. Peter, Andrew, James and John left their fishing business, but the could have gone back. Matthew could never return to being a tax collector. Following Jesus (surrendering to Jesus would change his life)

II. Honor Jesus, build relationship. VS 15-17

Mark 2:15 KJV 1900
15 And it came to pass, that, as Jesus sat at meat in his house, many publicans and sinners sat also together with Jesus and his disciples: for there were many, and they followed him.
Mark 2:15 NASB95
15 And it happened that He was reclining at the table in his house, and many tax collectors and sinners were dining with Jesus and His disciples; for there were many of them, and they were following Him.
Why did Matthew invite Jesus to his house? To honor Jesus. What a great way to honor Jesus, bring people that he had built a relationship with to Jesus.
2.
1. Matthew was very exited about his new life, a changed life. He has Jesus in his house, and he invites his friends. He made a great fest.
Luke 5:29 KJV 1900
29 And Levi made him a great feast in his own house: and there was a great company of publicans and of others that sat down with them.
Luke
a. He invited his friends, probably the only friends he had. Ealb
b. There would have been guilt to a good man for what he had been doing. Now he was free for the guilt, real joy in his live because he had obeyed Jesus.
c. He wanted to share this new found joy with his friends.
d. But the religious leaders, the ones that reasoned in their hearts when Jesus forgave the mans sins. They were on the move to find fault with Jesus.
f. Matthew didn’t seemed to be to concerned about what other thought. He wanted to get his friends to know Jesus. He just simply invited the ones that he knew.
g. We all know people, and we can all get to know people. That is building a relationship, and it all fits into to relational evangelism.
Mark 2:16 KJV 1900
16 And when the scribes and Pharisees saw him eat with publicans and sinners, they said unto his disciples, How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?
Mark 2:
Mark 4:16 NASB95
16 “In a similar way these are the ones on whom seed was sown on the rocky places, who, when they hear the word, immediately receive it with joy;
Mark 4
Mark 2:16 NASB95
16 When the scribes of the Pharisees saw that He was eating with the sinners and tax collectors, they said to His disciples, “Why is He eating and drinking with tax collectors and sinners?”
2. The religious leaders more more concerned about who Jesus was with, not how He was changing lives.
a. Our concern needs to be building relations with those God puts in our path. Those inn our community. Even the ones that are looked at as not so desirable.
b. These religious leaders, gave honor to themselves.
“How is it that he eateth and drinketh with publicans and sinners?”
c. They would have never eaten with them, it would have made them look bad. So they are trying to figure out would this teacher, Jesus would.

III. Share the truth with those who need it. VS 17

Strategies. Programs. Gimmicks.
a. There comes a time, and always has to be a time, when you just share the turth.
b. Here Jesus gives them the truth and gives them something to think about.
Mark 2:17 KJV 1900
17 When Jesus heard it, he saith unto them, They that are whole have no need of the physician, but they that are sick: I came not to call the righteous, but sinners to repentance.
Mark 2:17 NASB95
17 And hearing this, Jesus said to them, “It is not those who are healthy who need a physician, but those who are sick; I did not come to call the righteous, but sinners.”
Jesus, the great physician. Came to heal those who were spiritually sick. That is everyone, but not everyone is willing to aspect that.
a. The religious leaders were self righteous. That didn’t realize their spiritual conduction.
b. Their a lot of people in this world that do not understand that they are spiritually sick. They need to gospel, they need someone to tell them.
c. This is our calling to build that relationship with them.
