What does this “goodness” of God mean?
He is abundantly:
Benevolent, kind, merciful, charitable, generous, giving, caring…and on it goes
Zechariah 9:17 NIV

Romans 2:4 NIV
Or do you show contempt for the riches of his kindness, forbearance and patience, not realizing that God’s kindness is intended to lead you to repentance?
Psalm 52:1 NIV
Why do you boast of evil, you mighty hero? Why do you boast all day long, you who are a disgrace in the eyes of God?

CATEGORIES OF GOD’S GOODNESS

God is good to all creation!

The Lord loves righteousness and justice; the earth is full of his unfailing love.
Psalm 136:25 NIV
He gives food to every creature. His love endures forever.
Psalm 145:9 NIV
The Lord is good to all; he has compassion on all he has made.
Matthew 6:26 NIV
Look at the birds of the air; they do not sow or reap or store away in barns, and yet your heavenly Father feeds them. Are you not much more valuable than they?
He continuously shows His goodness — it never stops. His goodness is what sustains the earth and everything in it —
Job 38:41 NIV
Who provides food for the raven when its young cry out to God and wander about for lack of food?
Psalm 104:27 NIV
All creatures look to you to give them their food at the proper time.
God is even good to unbelievers
His common grace (non-redemptive) is poured out on ALL people
He blesses them with good things to enjoy: marriage, family, skills, passions, creativity, and so much more
He blesses them with the ability to appreciate and be in awe of His creation
Matthew 5:45 NIV
that you may be children of your Father in heaven. He causes his sun to rise on the evil and the good, and sends rain on the righteous and the unrighteous.
Acts 14:17 NIV
Yet he has not left himself without testimony: He has shown kindness by giving you rain from heaven and crops in their seasons; he provides you with plenty of food and fills your hearts with joy.”
Psalm 73:3–12 NIV
For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked. They have no struggles; their bodies are healthy and strong. They are free from common human burdens; they are not plagued by human ills. Therefore pride is their necklace; they clothe themselves with violence. From their callous hearts comes iniquity; their evil imaginations have no limits. They scoff, and speak with malice; with arrogance they threaten oppression. Their mouths lay claim to heaven, and their tongues take possession of the earth. Therefore their people turn to them and drink up waters in abundance. They say, “How would God know? Does the Most High know anything?” This is what the wicked are like— always free of care, they go on amassing wealth.
Psalm 73:3 NIV
For I envied the arrogant when I saw the prosperity of the wicked.
Ps 73:
The entire 73rd Psalm
Psalm 25:8 NIV
Good and upright is the Lord; therefore he instructs sinners in his ways.
God is good to believers (His children)
He pours out spiritual and physical blessings
Psalm 34:10 NIV
The lions may grow weak and hungry, but those who seek the Lord lack no good thing.
Psalm 37:23–25 NIV
The Lord makes firm the steps of the one who delights in him; though he may stumble, he will not fall, for the Lord upholds him with his hand. I was young and now I am old, yet I have never seen the righteous forsaken or their children begging bread.
He provides for us…He is good!
Psalm 84:11 NIV
For the Lord God is a sun and shield; the Lord bestows favor and honor; no good thing does he withhold from those whose walk is blameless.
He gives good gifts to us
When we seek, ask, and knock…He responds
Psalm 86:5 NIV
You, Lord, are forgiving and good, abounding in love to all who call to you.
James 1:17 NIV
Every good and perfect gift is from above, coming down from the Father of the heavenly lights, who does not change like shifting shadows.
