Strength in the Lord
Strength in the Lord
Begin sermon with my experience with Russian police and then our airport incident when we were leaving.
When going through our adoption, I knew the Lord had called us to bring home our two girls. I knew that He would provide everything needed, but there were times that my human side came out thought were is the money coming from to continue moving forward?
1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.” 3 Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.” 5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree. And behold, an angel touched him and said to him, “Arise and eat.” 6 And he looked, and behold, there was at his head a cake baked on hot stones and a jar of water. And he ate and drank and lay down again. 7 And the angel of the Lord came again a second time and touched him and said, “Arise and eat, for the journey is too great for you.” 8 And he arose and ate and drank, and went in the strength of that food forty days and forty nights to Horeb, the mount of God.
What makes us fearless in one thing, yet fear other things?

There he came to a cave and lodged in it. And behold, the word of the Lord came to him, and he said to him, “What are you doing here, Elijah?”
Looking at our scriptures today, we see one in this same situation.

In chapter 18, Elijah had full confidence in God to show His strength and power through him when he called Ahab out. When he called the prophets of baal out.
But we see in the scriptures today that Elijah has a sense of fear and ready to give up. He cannot take anymore.
Has anyone had that one person in their life and just made it their goal to hinder everything you set out to do?
What makes us fearless in one thing, yet fear other things?
For Elijah that person is Jezabel. In verses1-2, she sets out to have Elijah killed because she is tired of him.
1 Ahab told Jezebel all that Elijah had done, and how he had killed all the prophets with the sword. 2 Then Jezebel sent a messenger to Elijah, saying, “So may the gods do to me and more also, if I do not make your life as the life of one of them by this time tomorrow.”
When Elijah finds out, what does he do? RUNS!, because he is afraid.
3 Then he was afraid, and he arose and ran for his life and came to Beersheba, which belongs to Judah, and left his servant there.
So many times we are like Elijah and we become afraid of our problems and run from them. We may have spent hours or even years dealing with the issue and just become tired and drained.
4 But he himself went a day’s journey into the wilderness and came and sat down under a broom tree. And he asked that he might die, saying, “It is enough; now, O Lord, take away my life, for I am no better than my fathers.”
1 Kings 19:
Instead of calling on the Lord, Elijah was ready to give up to the point of asking the Lord to take his life. What is ironic is we see death, he runs from one and calls on the other.
BUT, but the Lord is not done with him yet. The Lord shows Elijah, just as He does with us that when you seek Him, He will give you strength to endure through the issue or problem.
5 And he lay down and slept under a broom tree.
7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited. 8 Three times I pleaded with the Lord about this, that it should leave me. 9 But he said to me, “My grace is sufficient for you, for my power is made perfect in weakness.” Therefore I will boast all the more gladly of my weaknesses, so that the power of Christ may rest upon me. 10 For the sake of Christ, then, I am content with weaknesses, insults, hardships, persecutions, and calamities. For when I am weak, then I am strong.
God gave Elijah what was needed to help him endure. He didn’t remove the issue, but gave him strength to continue through it. We see the same with Paul in
7 So to keep me from becoming conceited because of the surpassing greatness of the revelations, a thorn was given me in the flesh, a messenger of Satan to harass me, to keep me from becoming conceited.
If we continue through chapter 19, we see that the Lord speaks to Elijah in a low quiet voice and gives him reassurance and a task. Showing that his time is not finished and his fears should fall on the Lord.
Just as us, allow the Lord to take your fears and struggles. Listen to that low quiet voice to lead you and give you strength.
