20 En aan Hom wat mag het om te doen ver bo alles wat ons bid of dink, volgens die krag wat in ons werk,

20 Now to Him Who, by (in consequence of) the [action of His] power that is at work within us, is able to [carry out His purpose and] do superabundantly, far over and above all that we [dare] ask or think [infinitely beyond our highest prayers, desires, thoughts, hopes, or dreams]—
WAT LEER HIERDIE SKRIF ONS ALLES?
Aan die hand van twee kommentare wil ek hoofpunte uitlig in die verstaan van hierdie enkele gedeelte van Paulus se brief.

A. ONS HET ‘N VERKEERDE BEELD OF PERSPEKTIEF VAN GOD
1. He is able to do all—above all—abundantly above all—exceeding abundantly above all!

2. The first characterizes Him as One who is able to do huper panta (ὑπερ παντα), literally, “above all things,” thus, “in a measure exceeding all things, beyond all things.”

3. The second speaks of Him as able to do huperekperissou (ὑπερεκπερισσου). The word is made up of perissos (περισσος), “exceeding some number or measure, over and above, more than necessary,”

5. It speaks of the ability of God to do something, that ability having more than enough potential power, this power exhaustless, and then some on top of that.

6. Thus, Paul says that God is able to do super-abundantly above and beyond what we ask or think, and then some on top of that.

B. ONS HET ‘N VERKEERDE BEELD OF PERSPEKTIEF VAN MENSE
1. The power (dunamis (δυναμις)) that is putting forth energy in us (energeō (ἐνεργεω)), is the operation of the Holy Spirit in His work of sanctification.
Die krag (dunamis (δυναμις)) wat energie in ons uitstoot (energeō (ἐνεργεω)), is die werking van die Heilige Gees in Sy heiligmaking.
2. God is able to do for us and answer our prayers according to the efficiency, richness, and power of the working of the Spirit in our lives.
God kan vir ons doen en ons gebede beantwoord volgens die doeltreffendheid, rykdom en krag van die werking van die Gees in ons lewens.
3. This latter is determined by the yieldedness of the believer to the Holy Spirit.
Laasgenoemde word bepaal deur die oorgawe en toewyding van die gelowige aan die Heilige Gees.
4. Thus, the saint determines what God is able to do for him.
So bepaal die heilige/gelowige wat God vir hom kan doen.
5. In His inherent ability, there is no limit to what God can do in and through the saint.
In sy inherente vermoë is daar geen beperking op wat God in en deur die heilige/gelowige kan doen nie
6. But the saint limits the working of God in and through him by the degree of his yieldedness to the Spirit.[1]
Maar die heilige/gelowige beperk die werk van God in en deur hom deur die mate van sy oorgawe en beskikbaarheid aan die Heilige Gees.
C. ONS HET ‘N VERKEERDE BEELD OF PERSPEKTIEF VAN GEBED
1. The word “ask” is aiteō (αἰτεω), “to ask that something be given”; it is a request of the will.
2. We may ask what we will, and he will do it for usb.

3. We may “ask” for the pardon of all our sins,
· the supply of all our wants,
· and for support in all our conflicts;

· and “ask” for the fulfilment of them all to our souls:
· and they also shall be granted.
5. We may then collect all the most comprehensive expressions that language can afford us,
· and offer them in prayer before him;
· and still his liberality will keep pace with our petitions.
6. After having exhausted all the powers of language,
· we may proceed to stretch our imaginations beyond the limits of distinct and accurate conception:
· and, provided the things be proper for him to give,
· and for us to receive,
· he can, and will, bestow them.
7. He will do for us not only what we ask, but what we “think;”
· he will do it “all” and “above” all, and “abundantly” above all,
· yea, “exceeding” abundantly above all that we can ask or think.[2]
.
8. The verb here is in the middle voice, “to ask for one’s self or in one’s own interest.”
9. “Think” is noeō (νοεω), “to consider.”
